Hakone Biru Gura Reviews

KyotoLefty
Hakone Harumeki Pale Ale 3.2
Tap at Yokohama Fes. Orange-gold, clear. Nose is peach, orange, biscuity malt. Sweet and fruity flavor, oily. Nothing like the quality of their pils or stout, but ok.

biirusaikou
Hakone Brown 3.3
Draught at Keyaki 2014. Nutty caramel, mild plum, roasted malt. Fairly decent and drinkable brown ale.

Hakone Valencia Orange 2.7
Draught at GJBF Yokohama 2014. Hmm I get the zesty mandarin character but quite a mild brew, lacks more body, fairly empty.

KyotoLefty
Hakone Chocotto Ichigo 3.2
Tap at iBrew. Dark malt and chocolate nose, with some umami, light strawberry. Black, with a fine, medium head. Sweeter flavor, fruity, with strawberries coming through nicely, dark cacao, light roastiness. Lightly tangy in the finish. Decent stuff. The malt profile is a bit weak and thin, though, as if they didn’t care much about the base beer. Would like to see them do this with their stout instead.

Hakone Yuzu No Kahori 3.8
Hakone brewery’s Yuzu beer, I picked up at the brewery in December and served in a weizen glass a few months later. Best before Jan. 11, 2014... It pours a clear straw gold with a thick head of foam that starts off fizzy & thickens up. A fantastic sweet Yuzu aroma rises from the glass - Yuzu zest! Quite full bodied with a smooth mouthfeel. The taste is sweet Yuzu at first, very juicy, light lime notes that then finish with a bit of a bitter citrus bite(more fruit than hop) & reveals some biscuit/cracker malt notes in the aftertaste. Really good stuff, probably nicer than Minoh’s Yuzu White but slightly more Yuzu beer cocktail like as well.

Hakone Kazamatsuri Stout 3.8
On tap at the brewery’s cafe in Kazamatsuri. Part of the 800 yen tasting set. 7.5% Their winter seasonal pour’s a n almost black brown with a burnt tan head. The aroma is a nice roasted coffee beans & chocolate. Medium bodied, smooth velvety mouthfeel that delivers coffee beans, roasted notes & chocolate - frikin’ solid. The best of the three. As it warms up you get smokey & nutty qualities. A really great stout.

Hakone Odawara Ale 3.2
On tap at the brewery’s cafe in Kazamatsuri. 800 yen taster set!  5% clear amber brown pour with a light beige head. The nose is malty caramel but a bit sour. The taste is earthy, creamy caramel like those candies you used to get at Halloween. It has a bit of an odd sour/bitter  vibe to it. Interesting ale.

Hakone Pilsener 3.4
On tap at the brewery’s cafe in Kazamatsuri. Part of the 800 yen tasting set. 5.5% A clear straw gold with a foamy white head, the nose reminds me a bit of that maltiness of a Bud but cleaner with a bit of a floral hoppiness to it. The taste is quite full bodied for a pils, malty with a crisp dry hop finish. That earthy malt flavor isn’t my bag but it’s quickly replaced with a clean bitterness & a sweet aftertaste. Tasty.

Hakone Brown 3.3
5% aluminium bottle from the brewery, 525 yen. Drunk on the train to Fujisawa. A clear amber honey pour with a foamy beige head & a nutty , fruity, malty caramel aroma. The beer is medium-full bodied. The taste is a touch sour but with really nice biscuity, fruity notes with a slightly puckering bitter finish. Very drinkable, almost where it needs to be but not quite there yet. Quite good but a step below great-promising.

Hakone Chocotto Ichigo 2.6
Bottle from the fish supermarket place that Hakone beer has. Bit if a strange one. Chocolate and strawberries. Medium to dark brown colour with small golden bubbly head. Aroma is faint strawberry, bit of stinkiness, light roastiness, chocolate and cream and something chemical. Taste is not the greatest. Initial alcohol hit (and it’s only 6%!), unusual sharpness. Finish is a slow fade of chocolate and strawberry creaminess and is not too bad. Boozy hit is not too good though. Bit strange on the palate too, quite thin alongside the booze. Weird. Maybe this is past its best, or maybe it is just a bit of a strange idea for a beer.

Hakone Odawara Lemon 2.9
Bottle from the kamaboko supermarket. Pale yellow colour, bit watery looking. Small white head that fades quickly. Aroma is lemon washing up liquid, shandy and a bit of biscuity maltiness. Taste is lemon again, slightly medicinal. More lemon juice than shandy flavour. Further down get a touch of malty sweetness. Feels spritzy but actually not so much carbonation. Wasn’t expecting much and whilst it’s ok, it did kind of live up to my expectations.

Hakone Odawara Ale 3.5
Tap at the fish supermarket. Dark amber/light brown colour, small off-white head. Aroma is slightly vinegary, pickles. Not much else. Bit of malt. Taste is strange. Initially steak and bit smoky. T-bone steak roysters. Then bit spicy, some dark malts, bit caramel too. Toffee. Bit Flemish sourness, bit spicy. Bit of everything. Very strange. I kind of want to have it again as it was so weird.

Hakone Yuzu No Kahori 3.4
Draft at JBT 3 year anniversary. Nice, big yuzu nose. Cloudy gold color. Citrus flavor, malt, crisp and clean with powerful yuzu flavor, though maybe a bit over-powering most of the beer flavors.

Hakone Odawara Ale 3.3
Bottle/can from brewery. Colour is very good, very beautiful looking. Light hazy chestnut brown with some rusty reddish hints. Nose is quite yeasty, fruity esters, some sour berry fruit, caramel. Taste is brown sugar, bit medicinal, some tangy estery yeast.

Hakone Yuzu No Kahori 3.3
Bottle from brewery. This baby was a gusher so foam came bursting out. Colour is hazy piss coloured yellow, massive white head. Nose is like a saison. Very yeasty, funky, farmyard, musky, grain husky and some yuzu fruit which is like a cross between orange citrous and berry sour. Taste is fruity yuzu saison. Yeasty, farmyard, earthy with berry sour yuzu fruit. It’s quite pungent. The yuzu fruit leaves quite a tangy, sour berry finish. Mellows on the palate though. Tang becomes quite zingy and tasty.

Well made pils. Reasonably bitter - but not too grassy. An emphasis on full bodied drinkability. Decent carbonation with a nice, medium contential hop finish.

Hakone Pilsener 3.3
On tap at Hakone Brewery cafe/shop. Clear amber lager with a thin white head. Nose is barley grain malt, cereal, touch of lactic in their too. Taste is dry grassy, straw. Good flavoursome pilsener. Took a can/bottle from the brewery and it had a very distinctive saison farmyard yeast aroma and taste. This yeast seems to become too distinctive and strong when canned.

Hakone Kazamatsuri Stout 3.5
On tap at the Hakone Brewery cafe/shop. Very very dark brown colour with off white creamy stout head. Nose is chocolate, lactic creaminess, plasticky, and roasted grain. Taste has a hoppy bite with bit of citrus and then it’s roasted grain, plastic, lactic and bitter roasted and hop finish.

Hakone Odawara Lemon 2.8
Draught at the Great Japan Beer Festival, Osaka, 2011. Light yellow color, light. Slight lemony aroma with a bit of pilsner malt. Non-deScript but a nice enough lemon flavor. Not overly sweet, all right for a fruit beer.

KyotoLefty
Hakone Kazamatsuri Stout 3.5
Can-bottle from the company’s satelite shop in Odawara. Malty aroma, chocolate and wood, condensed milk, caramel. Black with a lacy head. More roasty in the flavor, burnt wood, caramel, cola, licorice (a touch), berries, chocolate, and a bit of hot alcohol. Somewhat prickly and acidic. Good hop bitterness as well. "Reasonably dry," to quote Wombata. Not all that sweet, with a nice bitterness. Could use more body.

Hakone Kazamatsuri Stout 3.4
Can from the brewery shop. Almost black with a small, beige head. Roasted coffee aroma, hints of salty meat. Meaty flavours overpowering any dry roast, some malty sweetness. Quite a surprise- almost a rauchbock from the spa town of Hakone.

Hakone Pilsener 2.4
Bottle. Clear golden, small white head. Predominantly malty nose. Flavours display corn notes and are quite sweet. Good body, though. A boring lager that does the brewery no good in my eyes.
