Millstream Brewing Company Reviews

DuchessOfIowa
Millstream Schokolade Bock 3.4
Poured from a bottle. Dark mahogany hue with thin tan head. Nice chocolate aroma followed by some subtle chestnut. Semi sweet malt that has some earthy dryness at the very finish. Great flavor and very well balanced.

Millstream Back Road Stout 3.6
On tap. Rich opaque black hue breaking mahogany on the edges. Thin white head that has minimal lacing. Nice chocolate aroma and taste that has a nice amount of sweetness. Mild earthiness and hazelnut in the finish. Mouthfeel has a silly texture. Very good.

Millstream Schild Brau Amber 2.4
An okay amber. Near to no aroma. The flavor is a bit off. The malts taste like they were roasted just a bit too long, and the hops add a level of surprising astringency.

Millstream Iowa Pale Ale 3.6
A solid pale ale. Mild with citrus floral hops. Nice balance throughout the drink. Bitterness at the end.

Millstream Dogs On Skis 2.3
One of the worst black IPAs Iíve had in awhile. Coffee and chocolate completely overwhelm the IPA character. Near to no residual bitterness.

Millstream Schokolade Bock 1.7
Bottle. A- Malty, subtle toffee. A- Dark brown color, clear liquid, beige head. T- Iron, watery, malty, subtle bread. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, boring finish. O- To make a short story long, a Dunkler Bock was one of my last styles to try. Searched for ever and everywhere to find one. Finally came across this a few days after I finally found a Dunker Bock (Anchor Bock to be exact). I loved the Anchor and was excited to try my second Dunkler Bock now. Well, this sucked. I expected it to have a fair amount of chocolate in it with some other nice notes but not so. It was very malty. Lots of blood/iron taste to it and very boring. A bland beer.

Millstream Schild Brau Amber 3.2
Not my preferred style of beer, but everything about it seemed to mesh together. I liked it, but Iím certainly not going to the store to purchase it.

Millstream Hoppy Hour White IPA 4.5
Bottle from Hy Vee. Color is a lighter haze, notes or citrus/orange and a little spice, much like its taste. Full bodied with a bit of a dry finish, but overall very good. Nice work Millstream! This wonít be my last one...

Millstream Schokolade Bock 3.5
12 oz single bottle from Hy-Vee Wine & Spirits. Clear amber/brown appearance with a small tan head. Aroma of chocolate, nutty malts, vanilla, light caramel, light toffee and a hint of fruity esters. Similar flavor, moderate malt sweetness balanced by a mild earthy bitterness with a medium body. Good enough for me.

rustbucket0873
Millstream Back Road Stout 2.9
Pours black with very tan to brown head that quickly dissipates. The aroma, caramel, sour, coffe, and small amounts of roast. The flavor is caramel and sweet up feont followed by roasty, coffee, and some chocolate. Leaves a sour or astringent flavor at the end. Body is a but sweet and thick. Overall think if it had more flavors up front.

ajnepple
Millstream Great Pumpkin Imperial Stout 2.8
12 oz bottle from Hy-Vee Wine & Spirits - Muscatine. Deep, dark brown appearance with a small, lingering, light brown head. Aroma of candy corn, vanilla, chocolate, caramel, nutmeg, marshmallow, light fruity esters and light toffee. Similar flavor, medium plus artificial sweetness with moderate spices and a touch of bitterness. Medium body with a kind of thin feel and soft carbonation. Not awful, but kind of weird overall. This should probably be listed under the Spice/Herb/Vegetable style.

Millstream Great Pumpkin Imperial Stout 3
Tap; pours nearly black with a thin tan head; aroma of pumpkin pie spices and chocolate; taste is sweet with chocolate and a hint of pumpkin; finish is pumpkin pie spice and a bit overwhelming; the beer was decent enough until the overwhelming spice finish, which kind of wrecked it

Millstream Hoppy Hour White IPA 3.6
12oz bottle. Filtered yellow-tan body. Lots of small floaties. Foamy white head. A pretty good beer, if you can get into White IPA. Full bodied. The hops are astringent and dry, the orange peel and coriander are more in the finish. Oddly refreshing. Solid offering.

Millstream Blitzen 2
Blitzen isnít a bad looking brew but it manages to be pretty underwhelming in about every other aspect. Flavor has some cocoa and black licorice but the complexity never reaches beyond that. Aroma is slight and the body could use lots more richness. Hell, even the bottle art seems half-assed. Iím just being grumpy, now. Iíll stop.

Millstream Blitzen 4
Bottle. A- Chocolate syrup, cocoa, subtle soy sauce, subtle vanilla. A- Black color, black liquid, light brown head. T- Anise, alcohol, cocoa, roasty, slightly dry. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, roasty finish. O- Iíve been hit or miss with Millstream but this one nailed it. Solid balanced beer with tons of chocolate and a nice balance of roastiness, some anise, and a little alcohol bite, but nothing that hurts it. Quite tasty.

Millstream Raspberry Tripel 3.3
Clear golden color. I can agree that there is more raspberry than tripel here, but at the same time, whereís the raspberry? Not a particularly bold or distinctive demonstration of a good concept. (at 2015 Summer Beer Dabbler, St. Paul, MN)

Millstream Bitter End Double IPA 2.9
Funny, I thought I would find almost every DIPA at least reasonably good (sort of 3.5+), but I didnít care for this and then the ratings here confirm Iím not alone. A little perfumey at the start, but with a dusty, tobacco finish. (at 2015 Summer Beer Dabbler, St. Paul, MN)

Millstream Hoppy Hour White IPA 3.8
Pours gold with active carbonation and lots of unfiltered specks. Aroma is caramel malty with citrus hops. It has somewhat of a alcohol burn right up front. Belgian yeast gives it that bananna bread quality, then lots of citrus hops and some pine making it slightly bitter. Pretty decent but it tastes stonger than its 8%.

Millstream Knows Jack 3.2
Draft. A- Smoky, peat, subtle booze, malty. A- Dark brown color, dark liquid, light brown head. T- Smoky, malty, woody. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, smoky finish. O- The guy at the bar was raving about this so I tried it. Why wouldnít I like it, itís everything I like. Well, it was not meant to be. It smelled like someone lit a garbage can full of leaves and grass on fire. The taste seemed a little light for a barleywine, especially a barrel aged one. Just wasnít there. It was okay.
