3.5 Angerik Jonge Lambiek 9 April 2023. At In de Verzekering Tegen de Grote Dorst. Shared with the lovely Anke! 4 months old. A: hazy golden, no head. A: cannabis, wet grass, dust, old plum, wort, green apple. T: sweet plum, grass, residual sugar, cannabis, wort. F: old floral hops, old stone fruit, grass, cannabis. P: medium body, slick texture, soft carbonation. This felt like the 'youngest' beer I've ever had; damn, so raw and unfinished. Almost got high from drinking it, so to speak. Monday, June 5, 2023

3.8 Angerik Cuvée Kluysbosch Lambiek Islay Whisky Barrel Aged 375mL bottle at Grote Dorst, pours a cloudy pale golden orange with a small white head. Aroma is massively peated, with intense peated smoke, subdued earthiness, and a hint of old leather. Flavour is heavily peated and tart, with plenty of smoke from the Islay, old earthy leather, and some old furniture. Could have more complexity, but the Islay character elevates this nicely. Good stuff. Sunday, May 21, 2023

3.9 Angerik Cuvée Kluysbosch Lambiek Islay Whisky Barrel Aged Poured from 330mL bottle (tht: 19/10/2027). Hazy light amber gold with small white head. Tons of islay peat, background funk, enjoy the whiskey barrel, but it doesn’t necessarily blend as well with the lambic flavour. Decent. Edit: soften and is quite nice as it warms a little bit. 3.6 Angerik Cuvée Kluysbosch Lambiek-Cider The third Kluysbosch beer, this time Angerik’s own (new) lambic blended with a cider produced in Basque Country; 75 cl champagne bottle with green wax (which took me ten minutes to properly remove), shared with my girlfriend. Tiny-bubbled, medium thick, egg-white, moussy but quickly breaking and eventually dissolving head, cloudy ochre-tinged apricot blonde robe. Aroma of very strong cider, even sugared apple juice, ripe red Jonagold and also Granny Smith slices, buttermilk (diacetyl, I assume), sweat, stewed rhubarb, wet wood note, white demi-sec wine, cheese spread or yoghurt, pineapple juice touch, fresh lemonbalm leaves, lime zest, even something faintly minty. Juicy onset, very prominent crisp green apple tartness but nowhere really acidic – instead, sweet red apple and even sugared cider flavours pop up immediately after that, even ripe Early Desire pear and gooseberry jam; lime- and green apple-like sourness does persist but in a soft, mild way. Lambrusco-like effervescence, supple and vinous mouthfeel, a tad ‘thin’ but this is probably due to the large cider part; yoghurty lactic tartness joins the malic acid, while buttery and chalky side effects appear, as was also the case in previous Cuvée Kluysbosch lambics and is probably caused by diacetyl (though it does not really bother me personally). Light woodiness is noticeable, along with much more outspoken sweaty funkiness from the lambic; however, this sour-sweet apple flavour remains dominant till the very end, with the sweet side of it even becoming a bit much. I am not a great cider lover and will probably never be one (believe me, I tried) and this concoction is a bit too cider-forward for me, even in a sweet way; it overwhelms the still somewhat frail traits of the Angerik lambic too much, but at the same time I have to admit that this blend is not without complexity and will certainly please the cider people. Benefit of the doubt for me – but still interesting enough to keep following this Cuvée Kluysbosch series closely. Tuesday, January 17, 2023

4 Angerik Cuvée Kluysbosch Framboos @home - full body, small pinkish head, very fruity, raspberry cider taste noticeable and much different from a regular framboise lambic. 3.8 Angerik Cuvée Kluysbosch Saison - Apricot Brandy Barrel Aged The third one in this interesting Kluysbosch project, this time not a lambic (oddly) but presented as a saison, which has spent nine months on an apricot eau-de-vie barrel - which is a new one to me after all those gazillions of barrel aged beers. Elegantly captured in an Italian style bottle - of only 33 cl this time and not 75 cl, another striking difference with its two predecessors. Bottle 23 of only 550 apparently. Thick, frothy, foamy, tightly and irregularly cobweb-lacing, snow white, closed and very moussy head on an initially near-clear, warm yellow blonde beer with vague beige tinge and visible sparkling, turning misty and more ochre-ish with sediment. Aroma of Conference pear, ripe apricot, freshly baked white bread, vanilla-scenting oak, fried apple slices, banana, brioche bread, slight lime zest, hints of fresh dill, brandy (the eau-de-vie - nicely integrated into the whole without dominating), young abbey cheese, sweetclover. Fruity onset, sweetish but not sweet, with a slight sourish edge; aspects of pear, apple, slight banana and a whiff of guava somewhere, active but very refined, soft carbonation (actually a bit too little for a saison, perhaps), very soft and fluffy mouthfeel. White-bready malts with that sourish edge continuing (green apple now), sweetish cereally core, retaining this 'fluffiness' and remaining light and elegant; becomes drier in the finish, where the barrels add soft tannins, matching with a herbal hop note (dill, lemonbalm almost) and lingering fruitiness, which indeed becomes vaguely recognizable as apricot. A brief moment of warming brandy appears in the very end, but does not dominate anything - and I would have been surprised if it did, at this ABV. Belgian ale seeking finesse and distinction - and succeeding at that, in my opinion; this sourish aspect makes it refreshing, a key component of the saison experience I suppose, but the wood adds a rustic element too which remains, all things considered, very subtle for a nine month period of maturing. In any case another quite unique beer, I was expecting another variation on their new lambic, but got an almost Walloon style craft beer instead, in the best possible sense of the word. Elegance throughout. Friday, November 4, 2022

3.4 Angerik Cuvée Kluysbosch Framboos The second embodiment of Angerik’s new and so far very limited lambic project, a blend of honey-flavoured fermented raspberry juice and lambic, aged on wine barrels. One of only a thousand bottles made, indeed with hard-to-remove wax and in the same elegant style as the first Kluysbosch. Medium thick, moussy, pinkish-tinged off-white, quite stable head on a hazy ‘brownish’ peach blonde beer with ‘dirty amber’ glow; lots of free-floating yeast and protein, making the whole turn into a murky, muddy brown in the end, and lots of ‘grit’ from the raspberries as well – maybe filtering would have been a good option here, because as the Dutch saying goes, “they eye wants something too”… Rather odd aroma of clear raspberry juice but not so much those typical tomato-like associations normally linked to this fruit apart from some sweet ripe cherry tomato perhaps, wet oak wood, red wine, weird and persistent off-flavours best compared with rotting Camembert or even rancid yoghurt, bread crust, nectarine, hint of wet cardboard. Crisp, tart, juicy onset, indeed obvious raspberry juice with a touch of sour tomato and even an impression of blood orange, fizzy but very fine effervescence, vinous mouthfeel; bread-pulp-ish core soaked in the raspberry ‘cider’ effect with little real acidity as in ‘normal’ framboise, more a very yoghurty lactic tartness, remaining soft and mild. Retronasal aspects of pink grapefruit or blood orange and some woody notes but limited tannins; red wine does pop up in the finish, accentuating the fruitiness of the whole, continuing in parallel with the raspberry juice flavour into a juicy finish. Too bad for all that grit, dirty looks and those ‘spoiled diary’-like off-flavours, which unfortunately remained from the first drop till the last, but certainly an ambitious idea which might well work; the only thing lacking here is a more sleek, controlled and sophisticated execution. Too bad, the obvious technical flaws here were a bit of a letdown after that spectacular first Kluysbosch variant (the whisky-aged lambic). Tuesday, September 20, 2022

4 Angerik Cuvée Kluysbosch Framboos -1 point for the irritating, pretentious wax covered cork. Shortlived rim over hazy brownish terra cotta beer, not looking very lively. End of bottle solid yeast. Lactic acid, horseblanket, animal fur, and discreet raspberry, chalk. Mild raspberry flavour, bit of I sparadrap /I. Warming up, the raspberry flavours become more intense. Acidthinning, crabonation present if invisible, light acidburn. Pretty good for a start. Looking forward to when they can start blending. Question: why is the brewery (Angerik) nowhere mentioned on the label? Saturday, July 9, 2022

4.1 Angerik Cuvée Kluysbosch Lambiek Islay Whisky Barrel Aged Earlier this week, the Den Herberg brewery was inducted into HORAL's hall of fame of lambic brewers and blenders, the result of almost four years of mastering lambic brewing and blending, after an initial decade of brewing top-fermented ales in traditional Belgian styles. Who knows, maybe a similar honour could go to Angerik in Dilbeek, in the northern part of the Pajottenland west of Brussels: following in Herberg's footsteps, they too, after many years of brewing classically styled Belgian ales, have now taken the step to dip a toe in lambic brewing - the one style most tightly associated with the Pajottenland region. After they deemed the first results successful enough, they made a bold decision and took an Islay whisky barrel to age their lambic in - Islay whisky being notable for its peated character, something not necessarily working well with the delicate features of lambic; after half a year, the result, dubbed Cuvée Kluysbosch, was bottled in luxurious 'champagne cuvée' bottles with cork and muselet and packed in branded wooden boxes. Only 200 such bottles were made - and sold out in less than a day, so I am forever grateful to Poseidon Beers for helping me get one (bottle 149 to be precise). Dense and tiny-bubbled, egg-white, creamy to even pillowy but regular, medium sized head retaining remarkably well (only slowly opening in the middle after fifteen minutes or so, but dissolving nonetheless another fifteen minutes after that); initially clear, deep and warm honey-hued orange blonde, almost amberish from the wood, with masses of tiny bubbles rushing throughout and turning misty further on - so far so good as far as looks are concerned. Strong bouquet of indeed very obvious and smoky peat, not just bags of moist peat like my grandmother had them in her cellar but iodine or even brine as well with peated whisky associations (Ardbeg, Laphroiag, Lagavulin and so on) immediately made, weighing heavily on lambic features of ripe gooseberry, damp hay, wet old oak wood with even a dash of vanilla, cheese spread or even young abbey cheese, sour cream, sorrel leaves, fermenting orange peel, dry cider, minerals (as in spring water). Colourfully fruity onset, gooseberry, wild apple, green plum, grape skin - acidic but not overly sharply so (in spite of a thin lemony edge), with a prominent unripe stonefruit-like astringency to it but also a softer, sweeter core vaguely reminiscent of peach; minerally carbonation effects from refermentation in the bottle, but in a soft way, adding enough liveliness without coming to the foreground too much. Supple, full mouthfeel, a smooth breadiness deeply soaked in lambic dryness, lactic tartness and light and still playful 'Bretty' funkiness, with this sour cream- or even goat cheese-like aspect on its edges; drying woody tannins gain considerable strength in the finish, and so does the peat, bringing all its smoky and iodine-like features to the foreground, indeed very peated whisky-like and lingering for a long time, adding a certain 'meatiness' and further dryness as well. Woody, noble, tannic, bone dry but still fruity finish, hops nearly absent though 'structurally' there - again, with the peat remaining in both nose and mouth for quite a while. Impressive for its sheer boldness: this one takes Lambiek Fabriek's Colon-Elle (also involving whisky barrel ageing) a step further, probably in an attempt to distinguish Angerik lambic from the rest of the market immediately and decisively, considering what is on that market already. Intense indeed, I am not entirely convinced yet if the delicate and 'malse' character of the young lambic in question is up to the task of carrying such a hefty amount of peat on its frail shoulders though - I think backblending this with lambic of other ages (in the future of course since older Angerik lambics simply do not exist yet) may yield beautiful results though. Fascinating newcomer - and promising to say the least. Watch out for more lambic experiments from this brewery, which after all these years manages to seriously surprise me. 2.9 Angerik Toast Besteld op 17-12-2020 bij Poseidon Beers en ontvangen op 18-12-2020.

3.5 Angerik Hello Darkness, My Old Friend Oatmeal stout (though at lower ABV than is traditionally the case) from this still active microbrewery in Dilbeek. Thick and creamy, mousy, regularly shaped, quite dense, 'dirty yellowish' beige head, blackish robe with thin burgundy edge. Aroma of old coffee filters and coffee powder, dry and hard brown bread crust, old walnuts, dusty old jute cloth, dry tea, old 'fondant' chocolate with fat bloom on it, burnt raisins, dry autumn leaves, elderberry, nutmeg, minerals. Dryish onset, some dried fig and burnt currant aspects, clear but soft sourish undertone and a vague dash of old beef stock cubes; fizzy carbonation, rounded mouthfeel, feeling 'fuller' than one would expect at this ABV. Dry nutty and toasty middle with persistent sourish edge, brown-bready and a bit 'dusty' but also with a clear metallic edge; herbal, dry tea bag-like hop bitter accent in the finish, quite long, dry with ongoing dried-fruity touches and a lingering metallic 'zing' - though in this kind of lower ABV stouts, that does not really bother me too much. In all, even if perhaps a bit 'dusty' and herbal for the style, an accomplished stout, with remarkable body for its strength. Much better than expected, to be frank. Monday, April 13, 2020

4 Angerik Hello Darkness, My Old Friend Bière noire profonde opaque surmontée d’un col de mousse brun clair bien calibré stable et compact. Bonne tenue.

Wednesday, April 8, 2020

4 Angerik Hello Darkness, My Old Friend Thuis geproefd op 11 mei 2019 van 33 cl fles. (bierschuur Groot-Bijgaarden) Diep diep donkerbruin, zo goed als zwart met goede beigebruine stbiele kraag. Aroma: geroosterde mout, chocolade, granig, zoetje. Medium body. Sunday, May 12, 2019

3.5 Angerik Hello Darkness, My Old Friend 23 February 2019. (Tasting formerly known as) RBBWG. Cheers to all, thanks Kraddel for the hospitality! Cloudy black, slowly thinning, frothy, beige head. Aroma of toast, milk chocolate, barley & oat flakes, dried fig, raisin, faint vanilla, brownie dough. Taste is light malty sweet, equally chocolatey & nutty, restrained & subtle 'dry' fruitiness (fig, raisin, blackcurrant perhaps); light to medium roasted bitter middle brings toast, 'basic' coffee roast, some fondant, leading to a dry, herbal & earthy hoppy finish, more toast, coffee roast, retronasal note of brown bread. Medium body, slick texture, lively carbonation. Not overpowering, certainly decent. Wednesday, March 13, 2019
