Boyne River Lake Trout Stout
Pours a dark brownish black color with a thick sudsy tan head. It leaves some thick laceing along the sides of the glass. The nose is nice and roasted, you can really smell the toasted barley and chocolate malt. The flavor is nice and roasted with a lot or earth exploding in your mouth and it leaves this tangy bitterness that is also smooth and semi sweet on the side walls of your mouth. Overall it is nice and flavorful with a finish that is all right could use some more carbonation though.

Boyne River Lake Trout Stout
Pours a near black clolour with ruby edges and a massive, rocky mocha head that dimples as it fades. It has insane head retention and lacing that coats the glass with thick. The nose is muted coffee and chocolate and not much else. There are some tin-like notes as well. The flavour is roasty, citric, and has notes of coffee, peppery spice and some light fruits. The palate is watery, harshly carbonated and harshly bitter. Not a great stout.

Boyne River Oatmeal Stout
Crazy ass 1 liter swing top bottle seemed to protect this beer from the ravages of time. I don’t know what black hole and/or time warp yjb pulled this one out from, but it was well worth the effort! Dark cola brown with a dense creamy tan head. Lghtly sweet round malt. Light cola acidity from roast. Chocolate is light. Low carbonation. Thin body, very quaffable. Lightly sweet, big vanilla. Subdued chocolate. A bit like vanilla coke, only much better. Rather clear with a bit of that oatmealiness. Really doesn’t taste old, but judging from the age of these ratings... anyways, must have either been kept in great condition or the age helped this beer out!

Boyne River Log Jam Ale
12 oz. bottle labeled Everett’s Ale and EK Ale. Dark amber pour. Short, off-white head. The aroma is weak, but does have notes of sweet grain and caramel. The flavor was moderately sweet and slightly bitter. Light acidity. Medium body. The finish was chalky. Drinkable, but unremarkable — perhaps too much past its prime.

Boyne River Log Jam Ale
12 oz. bottled labeled "Everett’s Ale" - this is the closest to the bottles listed and I am not going to enter a new beer for a closed brewery: Pours a crystal clear amber with a thin cap. The nose is subtle, with sweet bread and caramel. The body is thin, but good, with lingering notes of nutty caramel and toffee. Hop presence is limited, but this bottle may be a bit dated.

This was an ’01. The aroma was dark fruit, slightly tea, butter, slight roast, and citrus notes. The flavor was thin, and watery tea textures, slight roast, citrus, and buttery notes. The beer poured a cloudy brown color w/ golden orange highlights; thin head and lacing. THe mouthfeel was light bodied and creamy w/ a wet finish.

Bottle (Beaver Island Brewing Co). I was in the NW Lower Penninsula and couldn’t find a decent craft beer in a party store to save my life, until I found Toski-Sands in Petoskey. Anyway, I picked this one up for the regional flare and was pleased for the mostpart. It was very smooth, sweet and citrusy. It felt more like an iced tea than an ale. My wife dug it, so only had the one.

12oz - Aroma of cherry and malt. Transparent amber color with no head or lacing. An interesting flavor that is sweet and cherry jolly rancher like. I was not expecting it and surprised that I like it. Smooth palate. Not sure how old this one is.

2004 bottle. Talk about unexpected. It smelled a bit light and dusty as noted before, lightly sour yeast, a bit of wateriness, no sweet notes at all. Pour is yellow-orange, dull and coppery, bottle conditioned with a big white head. Looks as good as most APA’s. Flavor is just weird. It tastes like a light gueuze. I can’t deny that that is what it made me think of. Alot like Lindeman’s Gueuze as far as the lightly sweet, uncomplex nature, but there was a dry, sour almost astringent character reminescent of Cantillon products. Anyways, I REALLY liked it. Very unique, and that’s a great thing when it comes to this style, so many APA’s are the boring same old hops and pale malt. 7/4/8/4/17
While it may have been "unique" to someone who just started drinking craft beer, I really cant justify an APA that tastes like lindemans gueuze And cantillon products at a 4.0. If the brewers see this and email me, "yes we intended to make a wild pale ale" back in 2004, I will immediately change my rating to a 5.

Boyne River Hefe Weizen
A nice find in a 750 mL bottle. Not sure when this was bottled. Tangy wheat aroma with a hint of cloves. Cloudy yellow-orange body with a thin off-white head. Nice flavor reminded me more of a typical American Wheat than a Hefeweizen: fruity and light with strong wheat tang and estery notes. Nice mouthfeel due to tight carbonation. Too bad Boyne River is out of business, but these bottles of Hefeweizen are still solid.

I thought this was a pretty decent brown. The clear brown elixir is topped by a little head with some lacing left behind. The aroma is slightly sweet and malty with roasty, nutty notes. The flavor is virtually the same as the aroma but with some hoppy notes. Medium bodied, smooth and slightly dry.

This is a very light bodied that has a nice roasty nose but a lot more bitter than I'd like to see in a brown.

My bottle says Beaver Island Brewing Co. brewed by Traverse Brewing (which makes sense since Boyne River is closed) and I bought the bottle in Dearborn, MI. It was a clear orange until I dumped the yeast into it, which I didn't really mean to do. Weak, big bubble head that disappeared quickly. Dusty grain nose. A little sour for an APA with strong malts and flavors of lemon, apple and dust. Very little hop in the finish. I never have to drink it again.

Murky brown appearance. Nose of apples and maple. Syrupy, with big maple and nut flavor, and quite carbonated. I enjoyed this one, but fear that I'm missing something more interesting... I really couldn't figure out what to write more than the above.

Side by side with the Ska Buster Nut brown, and the definite winner. Hazy chestnut, with a foaming head and very beautiful. Barleywine/strong ale aroma, raisin. The flavor is malty and slightly salaty, the only problem is a slightly weak palate, although the slightly weakened texture may be due to the age of the bottle?

This was much better than the Buster Nut. Very dark, murky brown. Aroma and taste are both very sweet and fruity - palate is smooth and silky. I was definitely pleased.

Bottle. Small head, doesn't really smell or taste much like a brown. Somewhat effervescent, roasty...maybe like a nutty flavored champagne.

22 oz. bottle: pours a nice auburn brown with a very creamy off white head. Rich full malts fill the aroma, nuts, faint coffee, chocolate, a bit of sweet alcohol and a good hop presence all play solid supporting roles. . . Fabulous palate, smooth, close to silky - very soft nutty malts, milk chocolate, hints of pine cones, maybe even some whiskey, some sort of cherry or other berry in the finish right along side some bitter hops. Well done and enjoyed immensely

Boyne River Brown Ale
Dark chestnut with persistent, off-white foam. The aroma is a pleasant sweet and roasted malt wonderland. Nutty smoothness with buttered toast, faint chocolate, whole, crunchy grains, and just a light showing of hop bitterness. The palate is very smooth and creamy and just so easy to drink. The flavors are, not surprisingly, full and round. Caramelized sugar-coated almonds and pecans, whole grain bread, grape nuts, light chocolate notes, faint fruitiness in the finish, before a hop kick that is neither overpowering nor bland. A bit of pine and a nice mild bitterness makes for a most pleasant and balanced brown ale. A wonderful find and I'm glad we bought 10 bombers--more to share.

old perhaps, but not diminished; this bottle was found unscathed amongst the battlefield wreckage of the chicago summer gathering. i seized it and immediately "scathed" it. i'll bet it originated from a contribution by psychprof-- if true, my compliments to you, sir. a burly cigar brown color tapering to stone ground mustard ochre, with storm clouds of micro-sediment and topped with a chef's cap of beige effervesence that was short-lived but lives on gloriously in memory. big concord grape and brown sugar aroma, expensive leather upholstery, pistachio and whiskey-damp aged-oak cask, even some milk chocolate. no brewer's viagra required: a fully able and frisky carbonation, moderately sweet vanilla cake and nutty malts, superbly harmonizing lemon-orange and pine bitterness; very smooth; one of the best rich browns i can remember, (tho it's true i can't remember doodley squat, or even how 'ol dood squat is relevant at this point ).

Boyne River Brown Ale
Bottle, sampled at the Summer Gathering 2003. Malty aroma, lightly sweet with a touch of milk chocolate, breadiness, toffee and a faint piney and fruity hoppiness. Opaque medium red-brown in color, fairly slight head. Malty, mellow flavor profile, some toasted malt and caramel sweetness, balanced with a slight hop presence and yeastiness. Some nuttiness on the finish. Creamy, smooth mouthfeel. Tasty, especially considering that it was apparently over a year old.

Thick roasted coffee aroma. Body starts sweet and roasty with some smoke and a salty fish(?) finish. Thick oily palate delivers the flavor. This has perhaps aged too long, but I bet it was a pretty good brew in its day.

Light brown/amber in color. Lots of sweet, floral notes and also a slight tang. My label is also different and looks very new. Loving in Michigan lately I have seen Boyne River beer at a number of stores, even though they have been out of business for a while. Enjoyable and well crafter beer.

Hazy, light brown iced-tea color. Fairly white head. Nice hoppy aroma, some Cascades maybe, but hidden behind some other English hops. Same in the flavor, but there is some bubble gum sweetness and chewiness to this brew. Like crazy-man-behind-the-mask says, the label I have is quite a bit different. Also, they seem very new. However, I'm drinking this 4 months later.

22 oz bomber (I know, like I could get it on tap now) courtesy of Psychprof. Medium quick-dying head, black. Roasty chocolate coffee aroma, nothing unusual and rather weak -- could be result of age I suppose. Nice bitter chocolate flavor, pleasant but not what I would call intense; sort of a "lighter" stout, not my cup of tea entirely but so very drinkable; I could probably do 2 of these in a night without breaking a sweat and there aren't a lot of stouts I'd want to say that about. Sadly I won't likely get another.

Dark brown, fairly light colored for a stout. Ring of white bubbles, again fairly light. Thought this might be heading in the wrong direction for a stout then the HUGE roasted aroma hit me. Sweet aroma of milk chocolate, toast, coffee, burnt stuff, faint fruit (concord grape), and a faint smoke/wood that catches p with you at the end. Semi dry flavor with a burnt finish. A little light on the palate, but a fine stout.

This style is very good according to the styles of the guidlines in BJCP. The nutty portion is evident at the end of the brew as it warms. Slightly bitter, carbonation was a bit much however. Overall a good brew that is enjoyable to drink and for once obeys style guidelines.

Fruity hop nose and cloudy peach color. Flavor is a lot like Anderson Valley Pale Ale, but fitted in a slimmer frame. This finish has a bit of citrict sourness. This might be the last rating of this beer, now extinct. Thanks Psych Prof for this tremendous artifact.
