Grumpy Troll Amnesia Baltic Porter
Un-Muzzling Olde Muzzlehatch Ratings, #91. 22 ounce bottle from the brewpub drunk at my parentsí house in Wisconsin, August 2008. Opaque dark prune-to-black, big large-bubble head recedes slowly leaving thick lacing...nose is grapy, chocolaty, a bit too sweet and noxious at first, though it settles down eventually and a bit of toasty malts emerge...body rich and very sweet, lots of cocoa-vanilla, light vinous qualities and faint notes of sour fruits - grapes and cherries...light grassy-grainy notes late-coming onto the tastebuds do help to keep it from cloying or stickiness...smooth and velvety, low carbonation (perhaps could be a little higher). Pretty solid and one of the better things Iíve had from GT.

Grumpy Troll Bourbon Barrel Aged Spetsnaz Export Stout
Un-Muzzling Olde Muzzlehatch Ratings, #89. Draught sample at the brewpub, mid-August 2008. Interesting that they had both this and the "regular", non-bourbonized version on tap at the same time. Anyway in this case the bourbon does no favors; the stable head on the regular Spetsnaz is replaced by a quick-dying one here, the body seeming just as inky and opaque but thinner...nose is all bourbon, perhaps some raisiny-grapy notes are in there but theyíre pretty hard to find...body is also boozy and vinous, very sweet, though it does dry out and some toasty malts come in for a nice finish. Ehh, in the end itís not bad but definitely simpler and less interesting than the "regular" version.

Grumpy Troll Spetsnaz Export Stout
Un-Muzzling Olde Muzzlehatch Ratings, #88. Draught sample at the brewpub, mid-August 2008. Near-opaque blackness, big lasting tan head...nose of sweet, charred and roasted raisins, burnt malts, light red wine tannins...body is much less sweet, and a bit less interesting, mostly toasty and bitter malts, something reminiscent of cigarette ash...fairly light, strongly carbonated for style, but not thin; it works, overall.

Grumpy Troll Belgian Style Saison
Un-Muzzling Olde Muzzlehatch Ratings, #87. Draught sample at the brewpub, mid-August 2008. Hazy gold with just a bit of lasting head...sweetish, lightly earthy nose, some faint floral and citric hints, not bad...body way too sweet for a saison, tastes closer to a sweet wit with lots of sugared lemon flavor and acidity...it does get drier at the finish, and itís certainly drinkable in this sampler size, but itís not good, and itís not a saison. Or wasnít, maybe itís improved...judging by my recent visit though, if I had to bet on that I wouldnít.

3.1
Grumpy Troll Bourbon Barrel Stout
Draught sample at the brewpub, July 26th. This appears to be a new BB Imperial Stout; I assume itís rather different as Yahara Bay whisky didnít exist when the previous BBIS was first listed. Anyway, new or not, it pours a thick opaque molasses, with a bit of lasting dark head - most of the samples we had looked thinner and had little head retention, so this is at least a possible good sign...molasses and bourbon dominate the nose, thereís a touch of dank hoppiness in there somewhere but it takes quite a while to discover it, in any case itís reasonably solid & attractive...the body is grapy, sweet but with a touch of - to my taste anyway - inappropriate tart cherry sourness, though that recedes with some warmth...at the finish, thereís a dark chocolate-milkiness, and while this could be fuller, at least itís not overcarbonated or truly thin. Adequate effort I guess.

Grumpy Troll Sun Flower Ale
Draught sample at the brewpub, July 26th. Pale yellow/gold, no real head and no retention when swirled...grassy, dry aroma, somewhat un-fresh but not necessarily in a "good" barnyard way if you know what I mean, although this improves and becomes at least tolerable with a few minutes warmth...some decent malt character (a touch of rye, it seems to me) in the body, very dry, but a bit too thin and way over-carbonated. At least this does seem to have a bit of a "Belgian" atmosphere about it, unlike the previous and worse "Monk".

Grumpy Troll Monk Sweat
Draught sample at the brewpub, July 26th. This was billed as just "Monk" on my visit, and I suppose itís possible that itís a different beer. But my guess is that it just varies a bit from batch to batch - and name to name - not enough to warrant a new listing. At any rate, what I had poured a moderate to dark gold, rather hazy/oily, with virtually no head...nose is fairly alcohol and sweet, a bit of that candy sugar perhaps, little of that yeasty Belgian character Iíd expect...and the same is true in the body, which is very sweet, syrupy, and fairly harsh; boozy and cloying, with an off vegetal finish. Pretty terrible, but thankfully the worst sample we had.

Grumpy Troll Maggie Imperial IPA
Draught sample at the brewpub, July 26th. Medium oily-translucent amber, just a little head retention...sweet honey and more than a bit of alcohol in the nose, a bit of pine and rosemary/tarragon spiciness...body is mostly sweet, only lightly to moderately hoppy/bitter, thick and rather syrupy, with a finishing harshness that is both hoppy (good) and cardboard & burnt (not so hot). Meh, just passable really. I donít think I could have drunk a full glass of this.

Grumpy Troll Keller Brau
Draught sample, and then pint, at the brewpub, July 26th. Very pale, slightly cloudy straw, bit of a head and, in the full pint, some chunky flecks of foam left in the glass...very fresh grassy nose, wildflowers and a bit of lemon-lime; "zesty" is the word that comes to mind here...plenty of pale, biscuity malt in the body, but the overriding character is a dry, herbal-grassy hoppiness, which carries through to a finish that is probably the most bitter and long Iíve experienced in this style. It could be a little fuller I suppose, but thatís really a small nitpick here. Extremely refreshing on a hot day, even if we spent most of that day just driving. This was the first of a half-dozen samples we had (my brother and I) and we both agreed that it was far and away the best, and the only one really worth having in a full pint. I sort of wish Iíd gotten a growler, actually, and if itís still on when Iím in the neighborhood again I just might do that.

Grumpy Troll Liberty Pole Pale Ale
Tap at Grumpy Troll. There is some butter going on here. With nothing to hide behind, brewing flaws really come out. Pleasantly hopped, this could be a great beer if brewed better. Has a green apple-butter thing that kills the finished product. Someone could make a lot better beer with the same ingredients.Iíd never order this again.

Grumpy Troll Back In Black
Tap at Grumpy Troll. Thick, creamy, beige head on top of an amber-brown body. Looks filtered. Medium bodied, a little thin for the style, comes off more like a deep amber lager...without the amber malt tones. Sweet, simplistic, OK. Not off, drinkable, just sort of insipid, lacks a lot of the enjoyable depth of the style.

Tap at Grumpy Troll. Filtered copper-tan body. Thin, patchy, off-white head. Subdued aroma. Has a soapy hop balance, otherwise some caramel malt tones. A little bit of a grainy feel. Drinkable, not off, but not quite rich enough, not many lager tones.

Grumpy Troll Owd Finley Stout
From notes. Enjoyed at the Great Taste of the Midwest on August 08. The pour is a dark brown, at best, and is a lot thinner than I would expect for a stout. There is also a ring of white head that accompanies it. The aromas are a bit plain. You have to search for the, There is a lot of roasted malt and smokiness. There is a little molasses and maybe a hint of cocoa. The flavors are much of the same. A lot of smoky malts and just a pinch of cocoa. There might be a little coffee on the back end, but it could be my imagination trying to make this better than it is. The mouth feel is thin and slick with a crisp carbonation. None of these things should be present with a stout. The aftertaste is lingeringly smoky and roasty. So many better beers.
