4.1 Karl Strauss 33rd Anniversary Barrel Aged Imperial Baltic Porter 500 ml bottle from Karl Strauss in Anaheim. I held on to this for 2 years and finally got to it. Right from the bottle opening, this smelled like a high-ABV beer (which it is, but not ridiculously), and has distinct vinous notes. This makes it seem like this might be a harsh beer to drink, but it's definitely not. It pours an absolutely beautiful crystal clear medium dark brown with a small, quickly dissipating tan head. The potential harshness from the aroma only shows up in a nice alcoholic bite, but the flavor is smooth with dark fruit, dried cherries, figs and a touch of molasses. There's a dry light bitterness to balance the sweetness that almost more grain than hops. The body is light but not watery, and with that and the color, this nails the true essence of a traditional porter. A light sourness puckers the edges a bit too. I remember this being a bit smoother and rounder when I first tasted it 2 years ago, so this might be where the sour is coming from. There's a bit of cocoa and bittersweet chocolate in the mid to after taste. Finishes lightly sweet with a lasting cocoa taste on the tongue. Another excellent anniversary ale from a true SoCal original and all-around great brewery. Friday, February 23, 2024

3.6 Karl Strauss Boat Shoes Hazy IPA Arrives from the tap with a frothy, off white colored head. The beer is a deeply hazy, milky, straw-yellow-gold color. Bright around of floral citrus zest, and floral fruit notes; apricot, peach, pineapple, and tangelo zest. The beer had a nice biting bitterness to it, some green astringent hop tannins, and a lingering, woody, herbal note. The beer is quite dry, which plays down the rule fruitiness of the hop character, but this is still, by far, the dominant more in the flavor; bitter citrus zest, grapefruit and Meyer lemon zest, ample pine, and bitter woody herbal flavors are all here. The body is quite light, but with just a bit of palate fullness to it, and a solid, prickly carbonation. Definitely hits the spot if you are in the mood for something hoppy. Tasty enough. 4.1 Karl Strauss / Pizza Port Nectaron of the Gods 16 oz. can from Karl's in Costa Mesa. I tried this on tap here and brought home a 4 pack. Starts off with a delicious aroma of pineapple and guava, and what I can only describe as "fresh malt air", a very light freshness while inhaling. Body is a very slightly hazy, light-medium yellow with a foamy white head. On the first sip, you get hit with a tongue-scraping pine and grapefruit bitterness that I wasn't expecting at all (but loved!) at the same time as a fresh toasted maltiness with a light honey sweetness. The body is light and slightly watery which keeps this very drinkable and refreshing. There's a bit of a burn here which I have to think is mostly hops as 6.8% ABV is not high enough to cause that. That bitterness keeps coming, but it doesn't build up and become overwhelming like it can in some beers, and actually keeps this crisp and refreshing as you go through it. There's definitely a lasting bitterness in the aftertaste of more grapefruit and pine with a light lingering sweetness. This was 3 in a series of 4 collaboration beers with other breweries, and I wish I'd been able to try the others as this was an outstanding IPA! Of course, since the collab was with Pizza Port (one of my favs), I guess it's not surprising. These 2 San Diego originals have created a great beer here, let's hope they do it again. 3.6 Karl Strauss / Green Cheek Squawk Box On tap @ Bottlecraft Little Italy. Pours clear golden-orange with a white head. Slightly on the sweeter and malty side than I might like, but not terribly so. Citrus notes of grapefruit, lemon, and orange. Some grass, a bit of pine, and a subtle tropical note. Moderate bitterness on the finish which does help balance out the sweetness a bit. Not bad. Monday, August 7, 2023
