Hobsons Cleobury Springs
Cask conditioned at the Bailey Head, Oswestry, Shrops. Hazy gold with white head. This proved to be a sweet, caramelised beer from the off. Quite thinnish, some leafy citrus, some herbal notes. It's okay.

Hobsons Old Spiced Henry
Cask conditioned at the Post Office Vaults, Birmingham. Copper with off white head. Well the certainly is a hefty level of spicing in this, cinnamon and nutmeg to the fore, curry leaf. It's quite bitter and dry through the beer. It's okay.

Hobsons Shropshire Stout
Bottle (from KCM Päivölä, Seinäjoki). Pitch black colour with a small beigeish brown head. Aroma is toasted, roasted, mild sweet malts, liquorice and some slight chocolaty tones. Flavour is quite similar to the aroma Also quite big on the hops, but not disturbingly much.

Hobsons Postman's Plum Porter
Bottle shared at Latvian Independence Day celebration at Ebenezers, Crewe – thanks @BlackHaddock. [ Yes I know Shropshire isn’t in Latvia !] Pours a dark reddish-brown with mnimal off-white head. Aroma is mainly roasted malts with just a trace of plums. Much the same in the mouth, though the plums are a bit more evident here. There’s also a medicinal hint of balsam. This is reasonable but could have done with a bit more oomph and plums !

Hobsons Mild
[March 2022] Dark brown with a frothy tan head and a malty and slightly nutty aroma. The malt prevails in the taste, along with a little more nuttiness, hints of chocolate coming through with a nice softly bitter finish, all just a little thin really

Hobsons Town Crier
Oct 2023. 500ml dark bottle, unfiltered, from Amazon. Fresh, clean, subtle, gentle, tasty. I like this, though I'm not quite seeing what got me so excited back in 2004. Nice beer. And it is a classic best bitter. I think I'd just like a little more oomph in the malt. [3.0] Sept 2004. Bright bottled at Peterborough Festival - drunk 9 days later. Excellent condition. I love this beer. Fresh, flowery, fragrant and packed with honey dripping sweetness. Mmmm - I could sink a few of these. A classic best bitter of high quality. Yum! [4.0]

Clear bottle from Melbicks Garden Centre, Coleshill. Clear light gold with brief white slightly fizzy top. No skunking on aroma. Has a typical English floral hop and light citrus note, only a touch fusty. Taste of orange and lemon rind, light breads, pepper. Decent building bitterness in the finish. Light and refreshing.

Hobsons Lighten Up
Gravity fed third of a pint, Bridgnorth CAMRA Beer Festival, 8th September 2023. Very pale, clean and clear with a weak white wisp on top. Sadly this under performed on all fronts, next to no hoppiness and forget about any maltiness too. It's poor to be honest.

Hobsons Lighten Up
Cask @ Cromwell's Tap House. Pours a clear gold, white head. Straw, mild floral hints but otherwise fairly bland. No US hop notes coming through at all. Very mild flavour profile as far removed from an American Pale Ale as it's possible to be. Tastes like a weak cask bitter.

Hobsons The Speakeasy
Hoppy pale ale by Hobsons in Shropshire southwest of Birmingham, apparently a one-off created for a local storytelling festival - many thanks to my girlfriend Goedele for bringing this bottle over from England, not by coincidence as her sister Veerle is indeed a professional storyteller. Medium thick, tooth-like lacing, egg-white, tiny-bubbled, partially breaking but generally stable head; crystal clear warm yellow-golden robe with thin strings of disparate sparkling rising up throughout the beer. Peculiar, notably herbaceous aroma of spicy rye bread (though containing wheat rather than rye), pine resin (Columbus!), lavender oil (very strong Lubelski hops indeed!), cheese spread, spruce tips, bee wax, raw quince, margarine, juniper berries, parsley, yellow grapefruit peel, tonic water, hints of freshly cut hogweed, unripe apricot, moist white pepper, thyme. Clean, dryish onset, some subdued fruitiness as in hard pear or unripe peach but hardly any sweetness at all, minerally carbonation (a bit stingy at first), slick and smooth, almost a bit buttery mouthfeel; slender white-bready and grainy malt backbone soon aromatized by very piney (Columbus) and dried lavender-like (Lubelski) hops, with further accents of parsley, raw parsnip, dried ginger and thyme completing the picture, providing a long, resinous bitterness which becomes a bit rooty in the end, yet manages to remain in balance with the 'raw' graininess of the malts. Feels like a piney version of a classic English style golden ale rather than an APA - but I guess the APA moniker, implying the use of New World hops, is broad enough to accommodate even this unusual interpretation. Both hop varieties are very outspoken and very clear here, exhibiting their respective features in a very pure and pronounced way, undisturbed by any malt or ester frivolity. Clean, ultimately simple but to the point and technically correct, quenching and pleasant to drink, but you will really have to like pine resin and lavender effects.

500ml bottle (minus a Panda for Grumbo): BBE July 2024. Drank on the afternoon of 11th August 2023. Clear golden pour until the sediment arrived at the bottom of the bottle and I was joined by some sediment and some floating 'grist', it did say it was bottle conditioned, so it was my fault it's cloudy! Anyway it's fairy bitter in nature and no citrus fruits were damaged in brewing this.

Gravity cask at the 2023 Kingston Beer Festival. Pale amber with a light haze and a tangy hoppy nose with notes of bitter orange, earthy malts, and a touch of boiled veg. Malty and full bodied, bitter and drying, this could be a very good cask Anglo-West Coast IPA - except there's that unwelcome touch of veg again.
