Schooners IPA
Draft pour pint at the Collective, Woodinville. At first glance, I thought this was a typical appearing local, for somewhat obvious reasons. I went from "had never heard of these guys before", to, "glad I cashed in on the opportunity to try this beer for likely the last time. No stranger to the rebrand or redesign, but this IPA is good as it is. Dark copper pour with a ton of foam lacing. Very mild hop aroma. Much bigger in the flavor. Orange fruit. A bit soapy, but not bad. Lingering hops finish. Solid IPA for sure. Glad I got me a Schooners tick at the last minute. Iíll look for the new brew for sure.

Out of retirement. On draft at Tap 25. It pours a hazy gold color with an off white head. The aroma has a ton of honey with some light herbals and pine. The flavor is thick with sweet honey, herbal and floral hops with some light forest notes. Not bad, but too much sweet honey. Very sweet in fact.

Schooners Compass Rose
On tap at the Beer Baron. It pours a reddish pink color with a light pinkish head. The aroma is herbaceous, lightly floral and grainy with some potent coriander. The flavor is lightly tart and soda-like with more leafy herbs, weird funky grain notes and light hibiscus fruitiness. The coriander seems out of place and lends a little chemical soapiness. The finish is a bit strange. Iím not really a fan of hibiscus beers as it turns out.

Schooners Dead Reckoning Baltic Porter
On tap at Beer Baron. I think this is a different beer. Itís advertised as 8% and non-barrel aged. It pours a brown/dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma is pretty weak with some light roasted malt and dark fruit. The flavor has more character with noticeable alcohol up front and lots of dark fruit. I picked up plum, raisins and a little cherry. It almost seemed tart on first sip. A good dose of roasted malt somewhat keeps this in check and adds some light coffee and cocoa. Theres a little toffee in there as well. This was a pretty solid take on the style. The stronger than normal alcohol presence and dark fruit kind of through me off a bit, but it got better as it warmed.

Schooners Oatmeal Stout
On draft at the Beer Baron. I guess this one has been revived. It pours a dark brown color with a nice dark tan head. The aroma is full with chocolate and coffee. Medium roast. The flavor is really nice with strong dark chocolate, coffee, burnt toast and mild acidity. The body is light, but the oats add some substance to the palate that makes this a bit richer considering the low gravity. All the flavors are in balance. This is really a top notch oatmeal stout.

Schooners Oh! Fest!
On draft at Tap 25. It pours a semi-clear golden color with an off white head. The aroma is bready and grainy with a little toast. Mild notes of dried apricot. The flavor is full bodied, husky with some toasted grains, hints of dough and dried apricot. A little honey on the palate and in the finish. A bit heavy for the style, but tasty.

Schooners Oh! Fest!
Enjoyed at gabf 2014 and listed at the Schooners booth as a Vienna. It pours with great looking crystal clear copper body that supports an off white head. The aroma is classic with malts, caramel malts, candied apple and some nuttiness. The taste is smooth with malts, a bit of nuttiness, some biscuit and then some light caramel malts. This is a pretty nice Vienna that seems to be a bit on the robust side.

Schooners American Cream Ale
On tap at the brewery. Tastes a lot like their old light lager, but itís been years since I had that beer. This one pours a very clear yellow color with a white head. The aroma has a bit of sulfur with hints of noble hop and some corn. The flavor is very watery with some light but noticeable spicy hops. Buttered crackers in the finish. Tastes like a slightly more flavorful light lager to me. Very crushable.

Schooners Delta Breeze Wheat
On tap at Schooners. First of all, they served it to me with an orange wedge in it, which in a beer this weak and flavorless takes over completely. Even after I took it out, all I could smell was orange. Flavor? Orange. The mouthfeel was dry and crisp with a seltzery feel to it. Watery and highly carbonated. Not much flavor other than orange wedge. Really boring.

Schooners Lemon-Honey Wheat
Out of all of Schooners beers, this is probably my least favorite. Not to say it’s not crafted well, because it really is. It’s just the style I don’t care for. Aroma was light with a touch of citrus and honey. Appearance was yellow, small head and clear (little carbonation). Mouthfeel was light, and clean finishing. Flavor was also slightly citric, sweet and slightly malty. It went really well with the food I had ordered. No complaints. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Schooners Pale Ale
Pint on tap at the brewpub. The aroma has a little pine and some PNW C-hops present. Light underlying malt sweetness. This has a pretty classic APA aroma. Light danky hop notes are also teased out. Transparent dark golden body with a small, white head and good lacing. Starts with some metallic character and decent hop flavor. A little toasty in the middle. Finishes with impressive pine, herbal, and earthy bitterness. Not too shabby.

Schooners Black Devil IPA
On draft at the brewpub. This was probably the best of seven or so beers they had on my recent visit. Sad, considering this was one of my favorite under-the-radar breweries in the Bay area. Hopefully the new brewer will get things dialed in soon. Anyway, this one poured a very dark brown color with a khaki head. The aroma has roast caramel and a bit of citrusy/floral hops. The flavor is the same with hard roasted malt and a powerful inky finish. Not my favorite black IPA.

Schooners American Cream Ale
8 ounce sample at the brewpub. The aroma has some hoppy spiciness present. Some biscuit and corn flakes cereal-like DMS is also present. Smells like a cream ale to me. Transparent yellow body with a medium white head present. Whoa! Holy-freaking corny DMS hits you immediately. Becomes a little dry and spicy later on. A solid representation of the style, although the maize ratio could probably be turned down a little bit.

Schooners Vindication
RBSG 2008. Ah, the bus beer! We had a pony keg of this on tap on the RBSG bus; a fine beer for a morning using mass transport. Smell was smooth, like powdery malted milk and melted semi-sweet chocolate; it reminded me of Rock Bottom Chicagoís Clareís Thirsty. Initial flavor of the beer was a burst of cherry slash Pinot Grigio acidity (light, melony, with a faint touch of honey on the other side) and spiderweb qualities I associate with brett. Finish was Bakerís chocolate dryness with lingering caramel apple, and it lingered long. The "stout" qualities were always there, but they never predominated over the strange Belgian sour and fruit qualities. They also never faded away, letting the sour dominate. It was a great blend of two different but delicious flavors, such that it became a dialectical third, a new beery thing more than the sum of its parts. I know plenty of people on the bus didnít like this one right here, but I liked it a whole lot. Wonderfulness.

Schooners Oatmeal Stout
Draft @ Schooners. Pours a dark, clear, cola-brown color; creamy, fine-bubbled light-tan head; nice lacing. Nice, basic roasted notes and dark chocolate in the aroma. Medium body; medium-light CO2; no alcohol showing. Lengthy, rounded roastiness and dark chocolate, along with some connecting red fruitiness; comes together like a chocolate-covered cherry with muted fruitiness and just enough balancing, quiet bitterness; tasty and balanced. Nicely bitter finish: roasty, toasty, dry.

Schooners American Cream Ale
Draft @ Schoonerís. Pours a bright straw color; clear; nice white head. Clean, crisp, perfect aroma for the style; no esters or fruitiness; beautifully handled. Medium-light to medium bodied; lively, high CO2; perfect, crisp mouthfeel. Crisp, crackery and toasty maltiness; just enough balancing mineral bitterness; again, very clean fermentation character; an ale that drinks like a lager; this is why cream ales exist, right here. Picked up like 8 bottles to take home. Delicious.

Schooners Olde Woody Barleywine
Pours dark reddish brown with a very creamy tan head. The aroma nice with dark fruits, brown sugar, whiskey, toffee, little cocoa and wood. The flavor is super potent with whiskey, toffee, cocoa, and even a little coffee in the finish. Some underlying hints of raisins and spice as well. The nice woody barrel notes in the finish compliment the richness of the brew. A ver complex and powerful barley wine.

On tap at E.J. Phair in Concord. It pours very dark brown with a little red in the light and a creamy yet shrinking light brown head. The aroma is very sweet and rich with caramel, maple syrup, raisins, and buttered toffee. The flavor is really nice with some dark fruit like fig, raisins, and plums combined with some maple syrup. Not as full bodied as you might expect. Not much of a Belgian yeast character either. Somehow this manages to finish on a dry note. Nice beer.

Outstanding IPA from Craig! It pours golden with a creamy white head. The aroma is fresh and grassy with grapefruit, pine, and a touch of caramel sweetness. The flavor has wonderful notes of white wine, grass, and citrus with a medium bitter, bready/grainy malt finish. Great balance without losing that fresh potent hop character. Drinkable as all getout.

Schooners Vanilla Bean Oatmeal Stout (VBOS)
Looks like this one has been brought back from the dead. Hopefully this shouldnít be a new entry. Anyway, I had this on tap (hand pump) at the Hopyard in Pleasanton on 2/15/11. The pour was black with a fizzy tan head. The aroma was strong with vanilla, cocoa, and coffee. The flavor is nice with the vanilla present but not too strong. Itís just a hint acidic in the middle with some smooth, hearty oats before a chocolate, ashy finish. Light bodied and a tad watery on the palate, but in keeping with the style. This would be a nice stout to have with vanilla ice cream.
