Bottle. A hazy orange-golden beer with a creamy, two-finger off-white head. The aroma has lots of tropical fruits, passiofruit, orange, some peach and mango, and a distinct Belgian yeast aroma that certainly ain’t harming the beer. Some malts and green pine cones chime in as well. It’s full to medium bodied and nicely carbonated, in a Belgian kind of way, semi-dry, with a rather low bitterness level for an IPA, but it suits the beer due to it’s yeast, but I’d prefer more bitterness in the finish. There’s some pale malts in the flavor, but the hops are doing most of the heavy labor. Some piney, citrus zest notes, and a good dash of tropical fruits, including orange and grapefruit. Lasting piney, fruity finish. Sure a beer I’m gonna repeat, it’s delicious and tasteful and dangerously easy drinkable. Would be interesting though, if they brewed a sister beer with their regular ale yeast strain and made sure it was a rather dry one. But this is sure a fine brew anyway. 160628

At Kufle i kapsle, Warsaw, February 2014. Shared with lovely Anja. Sample on a "deska piw" (beer plank for tasting). Dark red, orange tint, lasting white head and lacing. Roasty and smoky aroma, very heavy, like a Nutella. Tart, some dryness, balanced. Full taste, dusty, thick, some carbonation. Very rich beer, interesting aromas, flavors and texture.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown, almost black beer with a small ring of off white head on top. Aroma is slightly peaty, roasty, very malty with a hint of boozy smoke. Flavor is sweet, powerful, a touch of smoke and caramel. Very nicely carbonated, short sweetish aftertaste. Quite nice!!

Pours a hazy deep amber color with medium bwige head and lots of sediments. Swet aroma, caramel, bread, overriped fruits, but algo mango, white grape and citrus. Taste follows the aroma, sweet and hoppy, caramel, biscuit, citrus and grapes, finishing with a strong bitterness on the aftertaste.

Norwegian saison, sampled at BeerTemple. Lacing, off-white, moussy head, ochre golden blonde robe, cloudy. Rich aroma of a lot of white grape peel and dry white wine, honey, dough, mandarin peel, sour apple, yoghurt, dried banana, wet hay, gooseberry. Fruity onset, hints of peach, pineapple, pear and some banana but most of all unripe gooseberry, softish carbo, bready malt body with a honeyish sweetish touch but dried by a soft lactic tartness which is further enhanced by a vinous tartness in the end, paired with a slight woody touch and earthy hop bitterishness. Majestically beautiful, still fairly clean but completely to the point, this is truly a tribute to the Belgian strong saison style.

Fruit Gose, tasted from tap at BeerTemple. Lacing, off-pinkish, moussy head, murky cherry red colour. Aroma of a lot of sour raspberry, redcurrant, Sauerkraut, dried tomato, soggy white bread, some sweet strawberry notes here and there. Nice tartness of sour berries in the onset, raspberry with that typical dry tomato flavor again, softish carbo, soapy wheat background, softish mouthfeel, salty touch in an otherwise dryingly tart finish, as expected from a Gose. Interesting.

Draught at BeerTemple in Amsterdam during Nogne O’s tap take over for Carnivale Brettanomyces. Creamy, dense, pale greyish beige head, deep mahogany brown robe with burgundy hue. Aroma of sherry vinegar, moldy nut shells, black tea, dried tree leaves, wet cardboard, elderberry, balsamico, dry red wine. Tart onset, sour berries, medium carbo, nutty malt body, dry and a bit woody while the tartness continues and further dries the mouth, medium long finish. Atypical for the style - a bit harsh on the palate, not too well balanced and lacking a bit in both complexity and ’roundedness’ or even some sweetness to balance out the acidity. I do not have the impression Nogne O, who otherwise have done great things, has a thorough understanding of this traditional style. Not their best work, to my taste, and a missed opportunity at greatness in a style which is experiencing something of a revival these days even in its home country.

Served in 12oz tulip glass at Beer Revolution in Edmonton pouring black in color with a finger of light brown head that leaves some spotted lacing on the glass. Aroma is mild roasted grains and chocolate with a hint of coffee. Taste is a coffee and roasted grains bitterness with a chocolate malty sweetness. Medium bodied with modest carbonation. Overall, a nicely balanced stout which is smooth and easy to drink even though it is full flavored.

50 cl, bottle fermented, batch #1584, brewed February 4th 2016. Some chill-haze, light yellow, thin cap, low carbonation. As expected. Not much aroma, faint citrusy notes. Mouthfeel is tart, dry, slightly oily, well carbonated. Flavours are crammed with all kinds of citrus fruits, rhubarb and similar sour notes, along with the most obvius ingredient in a gose, salt. All in all a nice treat, like a hard apple cider with no sweetening to it.

Bouteille 25cl, batch# 894/895, brewed 29.11.2012, BB 29.11.2027.

An APA spiced with lemongrass, depicted on the otherwise typically sober label. Irregular, coarse, bubbly, moussy, off-white head on top of a lightly hazy peach blonde beer with vivid sparkling. Quite straightforward aroma of indeed some dry lemongrass (but less fragrant than I expected), next to dried flowers, grape peel, starfruit, baker’s yeast, toasted white bread, bitterroot, white pepper, dry earth, sourdough, dried peppermint (probably the lemongrass again), raw pineapple, hay, soap, fresh yellow grapefruit peel, some stale urine (old hops?). Crisp onset, clean, with vague fruity accents of green banana and starfruit, subdued sweetishness, minerally, gently carbonated, spicy touches here and there, over a lean, supple body, a bit grainy, somewhat bready and soapy (wheaty), lightly toasted, evolving into a drying, spicy, earthy hoppiness yielding floral and peppery aromas retronasally and leaving behind a thin but long-lasting, spicy bitterness. Lemongrass blends in with the hops but remains very subtle, even though the brewery states it was added late in the brewing process in order to capture its aromas; I had other lemongrass-flavored beers with more delicate exotic spiciness to them so either this bottle is already past its prime, or the lemongrass hasn’t been applied all too succesfully. Other than that, this is a perfectly fine, well-crafted APA, but I hadn’t expected anything less from them.
