Nursery Old Mother Hubbard
First tasted this in the Fat Cat, Norwich in June 2002. Cask, handpump dispense. Ruby black in colour with a thin creamy white head. Strong fruit dumpling flavours present in the long intense aroma. Thin but lovely creamy texture to the mouthfeel and good lacing. Dark malts give a rich moist maltloaf base with molasses, plum jam, dates and sultanas. There is a slight earthy note in the brief aftertaste but sweetness returns rather quickly. The finish is malty and fruity with strong vinous cask notes and alcoholic sherry flavours evident in the throat. This is a cracking Old Ale does not taste like a stout though? Highly recommended.
