Potton Shambles Bitter
(from old notes) - Aroma : Medium toasted sweet toffee maltiness with a slightly skunky (used sock) hoppy undertone. Taste : Thinnish body. Moderately bitter hoppiness throughout, with a light malty toffee backbone. Lacks a bit of depth, but at least the slight skunky aroma doesn't transfer to the taste

Potton American Mistress
Cask @ Cricketers Arms, Bedford. Dark gold, big foamy white head which dissipates quickly. Aroma of sour orange, tropical fruit and cinnamon. Interesting but it doesn’t really work. Taste is a full-on sour bitter with a bitter finish. Sour bitterness overstays its welcome in the aftertaste. Good to see Potton pushing the boat out, but this is too odd and unbalanced for me.

Potton Shambles Bitter
500ml Bottle: BBD end of July 2014, poured into an Abbot Ale glass tankard at home on 28th May, some two months before it’s life ends. Obtained from a ’Wye Vale’ garden centre some time ago. Clear mid-amber body with a full and lasting off-white head. Malts lead the way in both the aroma and taste. Light, semi-sweet molasses in the nose push out any hop aromas while in the mouth the malts give a mild caramel and toffee flavouring that hides the hoppy bitter underbelly until the finish where a mini bitterness comes to the fore. I really enjoyed my pint (well 500ml then, not the correct 568ml).

Bottle from ASDA. Amber with a short-lived, white, head and plenty of fizz. Sweet, caramel and berry aroma with a surprisingly strong whiff of booze. Flavour was also sweet with doughy malts, some orange and a gentle finish with slight boiled sweet edge and hint of toastiness. Didn’t work for me.

Cask @ Cricketers Arms, Bedford. Golden beer, takes a white to settle. Once it does, it has a compact off-white head. The aromas are faint and confusing. Metallic and woody notes predominate, with something sweet (bubblegum?) also detectable. The taste is very unexpected: fresh at first fading to bitter. Extremely bitter, almost acrid, aftertaste. The very dry woody character takes a while to get used to.

Potton Shannon IPA
Cask @ Cricketers Arms, Bedford. Mid-brown beer with a hint of red. Lively at first but clears quickly. The aroma is floral and fruity, but fairly weak so difficult to detect. The taste is bittersweet on the way down with a bitter finish. Slightly soapy. All in all it is a decent enough beer but the profile is too weak for my taste.

Appearance: Clear copper with thin loose ivory head which was quick to disappear. Aroma: Fruity, biscuit, grassy/hay and slight spice. Taste: Low sweetness and bitterness, low/medium sourness a bit watery. Palate: Thin smooth light texture and body, low carbonation, no real taste, watery, bland slightly astringent abrupt finish. Comments: Bland no real aroma or taste, so bland in fact no point in drinking it so tipped it down the sink.

Cask conditioned at Harbury Beer Fest ’13. Cloudy gold with no head. Green, unfinished flavours, earthy, drying and fairly grainy. There is an orange like hop note rescuing the beer fortunately. Will re-rate in the future.

Cask conditioned at Harbury Beer Fest ’13. Cloudy amber with white head. Quite a simple, dryish, earthily hopped bitter but nicely drinkable and would have come out higher if it had dropped. Some grassiness, some toast. Fair.

Potton Lion
Cask at the Alexandra Arms, Cambridge. Pours clear, yellow-gold with a lasting, white cream head. Simple stuff, with some of that odd golden-ale-but-smokey character. Pale malts, white bread. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Light sweetness on the finish with mild white sugars. I like it OK but the smokiness cannot possibly be intentional.

Cask conditioned handpump Wig & Pen Northampton 10/01/13. A classic brown coloured beer with a white head and lace. Sweet and fruity. Plummy with a bit of nail varnish in the mouth. Similar in the nose where there’s a hint of chocolate too. Quiter interesting really but not totally in harmony with itself.

Served on Cask at the Sussex Arms, Twickenham (Dec ’11). Dark blonde to light amber in coulour with a small frothy white head - looked in good form! Hops and citrus dominated the smell, though neither were of an overbearing nature. Tastes were of grain, straw, hops, citrus - probably lemon, perhaps a hint of grapefruit. Mouthfeel was ok, not a strong beer by ABV and little lacing on the glass perhaps a little thinner than I prefer, but this is not to detract from a decent cask ale with a good bit mroe flavour than others at 3.6% ABV!

Bottle, from Rhythm & Booze, Barton. Gold, thin shortlived white head and gentle condition. Fruity sweet nose with hints of melon and bubblegum, gentle grain and a slight nuttiness. Soft and sweet in the mouth with some caramel and burnt toffee, becoming slightly bitter and faintly resinous from the hops before turning fruity towards the end. Finish is foreground fruity and background hoppy with some lingering nuttiness.

500ml Bottle: best before Jan 2013, poured into my Abbot Ale glass tankard on 15th June 2012. Lovely deep copper coloured body, on top an off-white crown of bubbles which sadly turned to a wisp and collar far, far too quickly. The nose has toffee and caramel within: but not overly sweet by any means. The taste is also leaning towards a maltier feel initially, but very dry in the mouthfeel and a bitter finish smacks your cheeks together somewhat. The maltiness is just a foil for the hops to hide behind until you take a proper gulp and discover the true flavours. Just a bit too dry for my palate, but otherwise fine: would suit a hop liking drinker more than a malt person such as myself.

First tasted this at the Paisley Beer Festival in April 1999. Cask, gravity dispense. This was beer of the festival for me and very popular with the high ABV crowd. Dark ruby red in colour with a thin creamy white head. Fantastic aroma of creamy butterscotch and vanilla custard, long in intensity. Thick creamy mouthfeel and good lacing despite the gravity dispense. Complex dark malts give a full whack of moist maltloaf base laden with sultanas, dates, butterscotch and banoffee pie. There is a whiff of hop resins in this, but very hard to detect. Finish is very malty with rich vinous notes of rum soaked raisins, toffee and oak cask vanilla. Simply superb stuff but very difficult to find in Scotland. Worth going out of your way seeking this English Strong Ale out, highly recommended.
