Wildwood Restaurant & Brew Pub Reviews

3.5
Wildwood Coach Pale Ale
This used to be one of my favourite places in Calgary. This draught poured a nice copper colour with a tight white head. A nose of caramel malt and some floral hopes tingles the senses. The taste of sweet malt and citrus gives way to a bitter finish.

Wildwood Kipper Pilsner
I really would have thought that a beer named after a Finnish player would be a Baltic Porter instead of a Pilsener. This pours a clear gold colour with a thick foamy white head. The aroma is grainy malt, citrus hops, and skunk. The flavour is more of the same with a sour aftertaste.

Wildwood Lord Stanley Dark Ale
I find it hard to fathom how anybody can call themselves a hockey fan and not have tried this concoction of pure perfection. Okay, so maybe not a great beer, but it has the perfect name. A dark brown draught with a light brown head that spews forth the great aroma of roasted malt and molasses. The taste was always watered down, never as strong as it could have been.

Wildwood Red Mile Lager
Calgary’s red mile became prominent during the 2004 Stanley Cup playoffs when the Calgary Flames made an unlikely run for Lord Stanley’s holy grail. While the playoff run itself was remarkable, the beer named after it is anything but. A clear amber lager with a thin head, the aroma is usually weak sweet caramel malt and some stale hops. The flavour was usually skunked malt - but it’s a hockey themed beer and that’s good enough for me!

Wildwood Oatmeal Stout
On tap at the original brewpub. Black with some white soapy head. Some roast aromas, and the same in the taste as well as licorice and mollasses.Average body that overwhelms the palate somewhat. Stouty, drinkable but not so drinkable.

Served rather cold. Very yellow with some white head and lacey; No aroma, beery taste.

Wildwood Kipper Pilsner
A: Poured with an average-sized, white head... spare lacing left on the sides of the glass. Body is a dark yellow, and clear and mostly flat. S: Aroma is of light hops, nothing more... hard to distinguish anything, actually. T: Crisp and dry, with a slightly bitter finish. Nothing special to set it apart from other pilsners, but still fairly enjoyable. M: Light-bodied with an oily texture, and average carbonation. D: A pretty decent example of a Czech pilsner, but I’d likely try something a little more inventive next time if I had the choice.

Wildwood Lord Stanley Dark Ale
Dark malt aroma with roasted sweetness. Has a high amount of alcohol in the taste with a roasted aftertaste. Similar to beer with a shot of whisky. Alcohol taste is too commanding in this brew.

Clear reddish orange. A fair amount of hops on the nose as well as musty elements. Smooth feel. Not much taste to speak of at all. A tad bit watery.

Wildwood Belgian Pale Ale
2008 seasonal. Dark gold appearance. Very clear. Chalky floral notes on the nose. Very subdued. Creamy mouthfeel. Taste has a very gentle kiss of floral hops. Finish has a hint of dryness but still retains it’s flavor. Quite good but could use a little more kick.

Wildwood J12 Golden Ale
Clear golden color. Has some sweet notes to the aroma and also the whisky edge of alcohol. Very smooth feeling. Beer retains the alcohol smack in the taste. Also has salty notes and apple juice sweetness.

Wildwood Kipper Pilsner
Clear golden pour. Aroma of some banana and grass. Taste is upfront hops that remain through the finish. Turns a bit sweet in the middle but quickly fades. Better than your average.

Wildwood Oatmeal Stout
It’s back! Pours a lovely near-black with a dense brown head that shows remarkable retention and generous lace. Aromas of roast and chocolate. The palate has lots of chocolate up front, along with roast and a subtle fruity element. Coffee brings in the finish, which is medium-bitter and dry. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel, very very good!

(Draught) Sampled at the Great Canadian Beer Festival in Victoria, BC, September 8th 2008. Thin, dissipated white head and a clear, light golden body. Very crisp and clean. Wildwood Coach Pale Ale
Draught at the brewpub
Copper color; creamy head. It has a light but nice fruity hop aroma. Good body strength, good malt and caramel flavor, with a strong hopping, both fruity and resiny. Long final. Very well brewed, enjoyable, finally here I see all the hops that I didn’t find elsewhere in Alberta.

3.5
Wildwood Kipper Pilsner
Draught at the brewpub
Blond color; creamy head. It has an interesting hoppy aroma, almost manure. Some malt flavor, a touch of hay, dry mouthfeel, also because of the extreme bitterness, with a good grassy hopping. The final is long, maybe just a bit harsh. Not stylish, but appreciated.

Wildwood J12 Golden Ale
Draught at the brewpub
Blond color. For being an Ale, it’s remarkable for the lack of character, roundness, fruitness, therefore associating it to a Lager, I would say. Useless.

2.6
Wildwood Hefe
Draught at the brewpub
Hazy blond color; creamy head. It has a sourish aroma and a quite dry mouthfeel, a bit acid as well, and very little wheat character. Refreshing.

Wildwood Cherry Wit
Translucent cloudy dark pink, very little head. This looks pretty much identical to Ocean Spray pink grapefruit cocktail, only more opaque. Mouthwatering aromas of tart fresh cherries, lemon, with a vague perfumey quality (rosewater?). Fresh zesty typical wit palate with a perfect natural cherry accent, lightly sour and tart, extremely refreshing. Initially the appearance of this beer made me skeptical, but the overall delivery is absolutely delicious. This was one of the true highlights of the festival. I hope they do this as a seasonal in the future!

Sweet, malt forward aroma suggests caramel. Simple but effective. Clear amber-brown coloured body is topped by a decent, off white head that recedes to a thin, but lasting cover. Toasted and caramle malts with just enough bitterness to take the edge off. Slight butterscotch character rounds it out. Lingering sweetness in the aftertaste. Medium body with fair to moderate carbonation. Simple and true to style if perhaps unexciting. Sampled on tap at the brewpub.

Wildwood Lord Stanley Dark Ale
Dark malts, some toffee, some caramel in the nose. Definitely puts the malts on parade. Clear, very dark brown body with ruby highlights is topped by a decent, fine bubbled tan-brown head that recedes to a ring and wispy cover with initially strong lacing. Clean and dry flavour and body yet plenty of malt character on display: biscuit, bread, a touch of caramel and a lightly grainy aftertaste. Dry, medium light body with moderate, lightly prickly carbonation. Sampled on tap at the restaurant.

Wildwood Kipper Pilsner
Quite a bit of cabbage in the nose (though not nearly as much as in the Golden Ale) but also some notable graininess and a hint of grassy, lightly spicy hop character. Brilliantly clear golden body is topped by a decent, fine bubbled, white head that recedes to a lasting cover and laces very nicely. Moderate bitterness and clean malt flavour just about conceal the light cabbage flavour. Crisp, fine bubbled effervescence that awakens the tongue. Refreshing, medium-light body. Comes across to me as a pils in the German vein and quite a decent one at that. Sampled on tap at the restaurant.

Wildwood J12 Golden Ale
Half pint served in an alt glass. Graininess and corn-like DMS are strong and not altogether appealing in the aroma. Brillliantly clear golden body is topped by a decent, fine bubbled, white head that recedes quite rapidly to a partial cover with some patchy lacing. Corn-like DMS up front doesn’t quite overpower the plasant malt character but sadly no hop flavours are apparent whatsoever. Clean, light, finishing bitterness. Medium-light body with somewhat sharp fine bubbled carbonation that awakens the tastebuds. I was hoping for a British style golden ale. Sadly this was not it. Sampled on tap at the restaurant.

Half pint served in an Alt glass. Light citrus and grassy hops blend nicely with grainy malts in the nose. Cleaar deep copper coloured body is topped by a decent, fine bubbled, off white head that recedes to a lasting cover with excellent lacing. Pleasant balance between toasty, biscuity, grainy malt character that offers a round sweetness and moderate bitterness. Citrus character is lingering in the aftertaste. Medium body with fair to moderate carbonation that engages the tongue but isn’t overly filling. I could easily drink a lot of this! Sampled on tap at the restaurant and brewpub.

Had a pre-release sample glass with jerc and mabel when they came through town but waited for a full pint to rate. Full inch of lasting dark cream head and lace on black beer. Thick chocolate aroma reminds me of Jello milk pudding. Full body and full flavour. Starts out with dark milk chocolate which morphs into a strong lasting bitter chocolate taste. Interesting wood and dusty oat qualities as well. One of my two WW favourite seasonals.

Draft at the brewpub. Black body with a small fluffy tan head, some lacing. Modest roast in the aroma is lightly acidic. Very similar flavour, with roast dominating, light acidity accenting mocha bits.(6+) Average palate. Decent, but was not particularly to my liking.
