The Cidery Bitter Sweet
Alright, really need to clean out my fridge more often as I just found this, now ten year old, bottle of cider. Without further adieu, into a tulip it goes at just on chilled. Completely lifeless as the cap came off which was to be expected from such and old twist-top sample. In the glass it is still, lifeless and bright; a medium amber orange in body. Big aroma of earthy fruit, rind washed cheese-like farmhouse funk, salty crackers, pale sherry vinegar, hessian and a hint of something doughy and yeasty. Wow, it is a strikingly pungent cider on the palate. Tart and dry with a lengthy fruit peel and hessian finish. Sour but controlled with soft tannins offering a tight astringency and drawing saliva onto the palate. A good lot of strawberry flavour builds rapidly. Earthy and musty with the cheese and salted cracker combo lighting up the mid-palate. First cider in oh so long and it's an absolute pleasure to drink body is medium-light to light with that alcohol seeming of something stronger. Really lingers long with more fruit and vinous notes coming through. Wished I had a lot more of these in the back of the fridge. Has aged amazingly. Need a new sample for a re-rate. Lovely!!! The Cidery Blackwood Truffle Ale
Bottle - posh package with waxed swing top - pity the contents doesn’t match it - I don’t get the fruitcake or the raisins - get malty mushroom and it’s not good - coats the tongue with a burnt rubber aftertaste that taints any ale drank afterwards - bloody horrible.

The Cidery Vintage Gold Cloudy Still Dry Cider
Pours a cloudy, dull, sandy tan in colour with one single fine stream of carbonation rising central of the glass. Earthy, topsoil and barnyard nose with a good lot of stewed cooking apples, core and pip, peel and pulp. Quite dry inside the mouth, tangy, mildly acidic and puckering in back. No length bar the hairy, rough woodiness. Tart and warming, the apple flavour is well evident and binds the nuances of it, brings it home. The body is light with very low to no carbonation, yet it penetrates well. Quite refreshing, in an odd, rustic way. Good to see ciders like this now in Oz! (50cL, no date stamp, The Boat, Mindarie)

The Cidery Bitter Sweet
Hands down, my favourite cider. Bottle from Mane Liquor. Straw yellow pour with a small, fluffy white top. Aroma is sweet and tangy apples. The name pretty much says it all here. Taste is bitter apple followed by a long apple sweetness. Lengthy finish for a cider. Fantastic

The Cidery Cargan's Perry
There is a peachy pinkish hue to it, bright as bright and sparsely carbonated. Spicy, alcohol fuelled nose. Loads of fruit and peel comes through, quite woody, as does an odd note of tomato paste. Rough, very woody in flavour with pronounced pip and peel notes. The carbonation is very soft, the body almost delicate yet its oily in back. A little hairy, tangy with light tannins showing, sour fruit swallow finishes it. The alcohol all but non-existent on the palate. Quite simple but with enough character to lift it. Easy to drink Perry. (50cL, no date stamp, Mane Liquor, Belmont)

The Cidery Blackwood Irish Red Ale
Clear, deep reddy body with a lasting off-white head. Low caramel notes on the aroma. Smooth taste, medium body and carbonation, a little sweet but stops short of being cloying. Easy to drink as I find most of the beers are from here.

The Cidery Blackwood Wheat
The Cidery Blackwood Wheat (on draught at the brewery/restaurant, Bridgetown) The sun had just peaked through the deepest of cloud formation above the tree tops of this lovely brasserie on the upper hill side of a town known more as ‘fridge-town’, on account of it being oh-so-cold for a good portion of each year, than its own namesake, a logging town amongst rivers and streams – beautifully preserved and bursting with charm. The ciders available dominate, but the beers fresh off the wall mounted casks should not be missed upon a visit. This was the first:- Into a stemmed tulip, it produces an ochre tinged, yellow gold, highly translucent with little evident carbonation – are these served straight from the conditioning tanks, I wonder? Crowned off by a nicely formed frothy white head that retains well but laces little. The nose is subdued, a little . wheat malt and pale pils malt. The palate produces a massive burst of strawberries, raspberries and cherries – the ester profile is profound and dominates the softer, mildly earthy malt tones and subtle clove note in back. Very mellow, smooth and endearing presence in the mouth. The swallow is tangy, sweet meets dusty, with more fruit esters and a mild touch of phenols. This was the first wheat beer I have tasted to break right into the berry esters post fermentation. This was a charmingly refreshing wheat beer, one for the people who don’t drink beer that tastes like beer. Original!!!

Tried on tap at the The Cidery. Dull, hazy straw coloured body with non-lasting head. Slight cloves, mushy over ripe banana and soft lemon in the taste but all tastes are a bit flat and a little uninspiring.

The Cidery Scudamores Scrumpy
An interesting, if somewhat confusing, after dinner Scrumpy. Tasted from the bottle into a chalice at around cellar temperature. Absolutely no ’pssshht’ when I cracked it and it poured a completely still, clear pale orangey gold. The aroma was absolutely enthralling and homely, which made it differ from the rest. Strong fresh pulped apples, so fresh I could almost reach in and grab them, with softer notes of pears, ground spices, cloves and a little prickly alcohol to tickle the nostrils. The clove-like waft strengthens and preludes each sip. Completely still on the tongue aside from a little prickle, and unexpectedly light in body. Apple flavours are quite soft but still manage to fill the mouth and seemed to be aged and simmered, and lightly sour. Interminglings of a spicy, herbal and clove-like combination cause it to be relatively dry and the husky, lightly warming alcohol finishes it off nicely in the back giving it a well defined uniqueness amongst the ciders I have tasted. It was actually quite refreshing, in which I just can’t see it being downed one after the other with that huge ABV. I liked it, another original cider from this surprising South West cider maker. Cheers!!! (33cL, Nookenburra Bottle-shop, bottling date unknown)

The Cidery Sweet Rosie
The second offering from Bridgetown’s quaint cider-makers. After the first I guess a trip down may well be on the pipeline. Tasted from the bottle into a stumpy tulip glass, cool and not chilled. Fairly clear, almost sparkling, orangey gold body with very fine intermittent carbonation forming rings of creamy white bubbles around the meniscus. Feint honey, sweet apple, butter?, and pear-like nose. Quite clean, but again too soft. On the first sip it seemed clammy and almost still. After the 3rd or 4th, though, it took full effect with strong tart and juicy apple flavours and a hint of oranges and mangoes making it quite fruity, but not overly sweet. Soft prickly carbonation came out as I rolled it around and it seemed to dry out the back of the mouth. A slightly cheesy, woody note came through aswell, late into drinking and managed to interweave with the other flavours. Overall, it was a really nice, pleasing cider; nothing complex and not as full-on as the ciders I usually favour, yet it could easily have me hooked. Quite nice!!! The Cidery Spider Cider
Had a trip planned to visit Bridgetown just to get my hand on these ciders, but after stumbling across them at the Nookanburra hotel I think I’ll have to visit the town for the Blues festival instead. Poured into a short tulip, chilled from the fridge. Sparkling, clear medium gold with high effervescence causing a whirlpool of bubbles to break the surface and spread a thin sheet of white that left some legs. Very feint pineapple, vinegar and, of course, soft apple in the nose; quite tart and clean. Generously tart, lightly sweet apples (very lightly sweet!) on the tongue with the soft touch of pears upfront and an immediate dry ’tannic’ puckering sensation beyond the mid-palate that truly caused my jaw to stiffen. Rolls around the mouth consuming all the saliva and replacing it with it’s own delicate flavours. Rather soft in carbonation and light in body, it finished off with a soft, well integrated astringency, remaining crisp and short for the length. I’m not a real fan of Dry Ciders, but this was in it’s own league. Not acidic or wine-like, it went down with the ease of a pale lager and could be deadly for the warmer months. Different!!! Black in colour with a compact tan head that nearly lasted the distance. Milky roasted coffee taste, mild sweetness and a short finish. Re Rate 22/06/07. This recently won the gong at the Perth Beer Show and it is not hard to see why. Same descriptors as previous though now more complexity and depth also a longer finish. Beatiful!

Opaque black brown with decent size medium lasting beige brown crema. Medium intensity fresh lightly roasted coffee and biscuity malt aroma. Soft velvet smooth low carb body. Medium coffee and roasted malt start. Middle falls away somewhat to a flat generic cola character and flavour. Low sweetness finish and lighter sweeter malt finish. Very pleasant drinking

Only available on tap at the Cidery. Oily hazy amber orange colour with a smallish short lasting head. Strong doughy grainy and malty biscuit aroma. Very low carb almost dead flat thin body. Light grainy malt, medium sweetness and very low bitter flavours. Short somewhat lifeless finish. Disappointing.

The Cidery Scudamores Scrumpy
This one is quite hard for me to rate because I have not rated many serious scrumpys. Looks wise it's a faint hazy gold amber. Sharp vinegar sour, lighter tropical fruity and spicy, (nutmeg and corriander) aroma. Flavour is a cross between a spicy balsamic vinegar and a strong low sweetness cider with plenty of registration at the back/sides of the mouth and tongue. Alcohol well masked by the sour aspect. Finish is mild sweet but with some dryness. I preferred their other ciders over this one. Venue adds significant points especially for natural outdoor early summer evening ambience, good Cajun food and blues music (female vocal /acoustic guitar). Nice place.
