White Star Reviews

White Star Dark Destroyer 3.6
Had this interesting "old ale" style beer at the Paisley Beer Festival on April 2007. Cask, gravity dispense. Black ruby in colour with a creamy buff head. Roasted malt in the aroma with a good silky smooth mouthfeel. Tastes like a cross between a strong mild and a malty porter. Dark malt complexes evident with unusual flavour combinations. Reminded me slightly of Whimís Old Izzak, but this was much better in mouth feel and taste. Slight caramel flavour with burnt toast giving way to overipe victoria plums and cherries. Vinous aftertaste with slight acetic port finish. A fantastic Old Ale and highly recommended.

White Star Royal Standard 2.6

White Star Crafty Shag 1.4
Bottled, 500ml. Cloudy orange with no head. The last of my White Star bottles, thank god. Tainted and poor, lactic, acidic, yeasty. It was a drain pour.

White Star Capstan Full Strength 1.4
Bottle conditioned, 500ml. Dark brown with white head. Obvious infection in the beer, again with White Star. Acidic, sour, totally off and a drain pour. Hopefully thats the last White Star I have in the garage.

White Star Afro-dizzy-sack 2.1
Bottled. An unclear orange-brown beer with a lazing beige head. The aroma is acidic malty with notes of grapefruit, and so is the flavor, though added notes of vegetabled.

White Star Afro-dizzy-sack 1.9
Golden with a white head. Fruity citrus aroma, best comparable to a perfumed soap. Acidic flavour, dry.
Wednesday, August 22, 2007

White Star Afro-dizzy-sack 1.8
Bottled. Amber colour, small white head. Aroma is leathery, grassy, yeasty and slightly alcoholic. Flavour is enormously leathery with some hops and yeast in it. Really out of balance and not very pleasant.

White Star Afro-dizzy-sack 1.9
Bottle (BBF20-06-06) @ Chris_o shindig 2007. Unclear light amber color with a virtually none off-white head. Aroma is caramel, toffee, fruit, medicine, sour. Flavor is moderate sweet, medicine, stable, and with a average duration. Body is light to medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat, finish feel is moderate astringent.

White Star Afro-dizzy-sack 1.8
A Mes rate: Bottle at the big Chris O shindig. Absolute shocker. Thatís honestly all I can think to say.

White Star Afro-dizzy-sack 1.9
Bottle@chris_o. Vinegar and yeasty aroma. Hazy, dark amber color, off-white disappearing head, no lace. Sour, vinegar, probably infected.
Monday, August 13, 2007

White Star Afro-dizzy-sack 1.4
Hazy copper, no head. Slightly sour aroma, vinegar, yeast. Rest was truly awful - couldnít even finish it.

White Star Starlight 2.8
3 Judges. Aroma is pale biscuit malt hints of spice and orange peel, citrus hops coming through at times. Taste is balanced however once swallowed i got a horrible cheesy lambic hop flavour that put me off, like a very mature chedder. A weird one that id like to try again.

White Star Starlight 2.6
Bottle conditioned. Poured a amber gold colour with a thin white head. Loads of sediment when poured even though the botlle has not moved in months. Very citrus aroma, very dry finish.

White Star Majestic 1.9
Bottle Conditioned. Dark amber body, with a small white head. No real aroma. The taste to me was a bit on the sour side with some citrusy hops . There was to much sediment for me when poured. A very disappointing beer.

White Star Best Bitter 1.9
A copper coloured ale, with a slightly sour malt nose and a full on sour malt flavour,.
Wednesday, May 02, 2007

White Star Dark Destroyer 3.5
Deep red/black in colour, with a liqorish malt nose and a deep sweet fruit malt flavour with a little bitter finish
Wednesday, May 02, 2007

White Star Crafty Shag 3.3
a light orange coloured brew, with a little citrus nose and a light fresh hoppy flavour.

White Star Crafty Shag 3.1
Bottled. Clear golden. Orangey nose. Sweet and fruity with notes of peach, minerals and vanilla. Kedmium bodied with fairly low bitterness. A nice golden ale, but no closer to a pilsener than it is to sahti or gin...

White Star Crafty Shag 3.4
One of their better bottled beers. Didnít have the acidity of some I have tried from this brwery.Slightly fruity with some bitterness.A definite improvement in the bottling arena.
Thursday, February 08, 2007

White Star Royal Standard 1.5
Golden with some sediment. Curious aroma of medium density fibreboard soaked in something sweet and alcoholic. Slight citrus taste is overwhelmed by the woody tang of sawdust, paint and plaster. Not very nice.

White Star Steamer 1.9
BCA (from Bitter Virtue, BB May 07). Rough yeasty aromas The malt and fruity hop flavours are over ridden by the yeast and rough bitterness.

White Star Dark Destroyer 2.2
Bottle picked up at the Grog shop, Oxford, 29-07-06. Mmmmhhh... another beer from White Star that doesnít seem to be having a great time in the bottle. This wasnít quite the disaster that the Crafty Shag was but yet again a beer with a considerable amount of yeasty floaters, though it did pour a little better than that beer. Poured a very dark brown with a definate smokiness in the aroma, had a slightly sour taste some roasted and chocolate notes detected but again they were a little outweighed by the slightly bitter sour edge. Like the bottled Leek beers I will be buying White Star beers in a bottle with some caution in the future.

White Star Dark Destroyer 2.6
Cask gravity at The George, Bethersden, Summer BF 2006. Deep ruby colour, no head. Iíve not had good experiences with White Star beers, so I approached this with some trepidation. This one is sour, with dark malt aroma. Liquorice/choc/coffee in mouth. Not a great deal of depth. Sour liquorice finish. Again, I am afraid, not my favourite.

White Star Crafty Shag 1.9
500ml Bottle picked up at the Grog shop, Jericho, Oxford 29-07-06. This poured a hazy golden colour with a large amount of yeasty floaters kicking around in it, had a yeasty aroma as well and tasted better than it looked with a slight sourness in the bite which wasnít too bad but yeastyness always present. Had to throw away much of it and like the Leek beers Iíve had recently this really didnít cut it in the bottled conditoned stakes.

White Star Starlight 3.3
Cask@The Kings Head Inn, Salisbury. Amber color, small off-white head. Good flowery hoppy nose. Nice flowery bitterness with hints of licorice in it. Bitterness continues also in the aftertaste. Well done bitter.

White Star Crafty Shag 3
Cask@Beer House, Manchester. A bit hazy nutty brown color(!), small off-white head. Toffeish, spicey nose. Malty, nutty, bitter-spicey -like aftertaste. Maybe ginger? Interesting, a bit different cask brew, but I wonder if this one really was Crafty Shag as cask label indicated.

White Star Dark Destroyer 3.2
Cask, handpump @ the Gardenerís Arms, Lewes.
Deep brown, almost black but quite clear in the lights. Thin, soapy beige head lasted the length and left some legs. Burnt stick and coffee bean nose. In the mouth it has rich butterscotch, Worcestershire sauce and marmite flavours with some dark fruit shining through on the side of the tongue. End has some smoke and more yeasty flavours with just a touch of roasted grain, but very little bitterness. Tasted this with the local delicacy of cold pastie and pork pie, so the beer was definitely the winner (the other two I hope never to meet again!). Sweetish, but easily quaffable with fair balance. Quite a nice beer.

White Star Crafty Shag 0.9
Cask gravity at Kent BF 2006. Gold colour with disappearing white head. Nasty burnt toffee aroma, bit of pukey lager in mouth. This is awful. I had to pour it away it was that bad.
Tuesday, July 25, 2006

White Star Battleaxe 2.3
BCA (from Bottles of Botley). Certainly not the worst white star beer Iíve had but not great. Smoky caramelised malt flavours with slight sourness. Just about drinkable in a masochistic kind of way.
Thursday, July 06, 2006

White Star Capstan Full Strength 2.6
Cask conditioned at Catford beer festival. Overpowering roast malt aroma. To taste, some fruit, roast, strong malt character, some sourness. Itís interesting, but not hugely drinkable.
Tuesday, June 13, 2006

White Star U.X.B 3.2
Cask conditioned at Catford beer festival. Slightly hazy gold. Aroma is hoppy. Flavour sweet and full bodied with a bit of toffee malt and lots of hops in the finish. Notes of ashtray.
Tuesday, June 13, 2006

White Star U.X.B 2.9
Cask gravity at Catford BF 06. Gold with no head. Nice floral hop. Bit wet in mouth. Session bitter with good strong hop on finish. Nice enough golden beer, hops have a sherbert quality.
Saturday, June 10, 2006

White Star Capstan Full Strength 2.4
Cask gravity at Catford BF 06. Very dark brown/ruby colour with thin beige head. Dark, syrupy aroma, dark fruits, some liquorice in mouth. Tastes strong too. Doesnít carry it too well. Some rubber. Neither Joeh or I could finish this.

White Star Black Panther 3.6
Bright bottled from cask (gravity), Reading Beer Festival, April 2006. Very dark colour. Big coffee aroma. Burnt malt, cooking chocolate and cocoa powder on the palate. Plenty of flavour. Very dry. Distinctly bitter, almost sour, finish and aftertaste. Fairly light body. Not a stout from the smooth and mellow school, but I thought it was very good.

White Star Best Bitter 2.4
A Mes rate: Ramsgate beer fest. Very very strange stuff. Ill go along with the duffster here and say it seemed for all the world like it was stale. Aroma of seaweed and toilets, flavour is dusty and old. Erm, yeah thats it.
Friday, May 12, 2006

White Star Black Panther 3.1
Gravity cask @ Reading Beer Festival 2006. Dry roasty stoat with some sweet chocolatey flavours.
Monday, May 08, 2006

White Star Black Panther 3.3
Cask gravity Reading BF 06. Black with a beige head. Really nice charcoal, powdery, really nice dark beer. Good intensity with coffee/choc too
Tuesday, May 02, 2006

White Star Dark Destroyer 2.5
Bottle. Dark brown with a brief beige head. Faint chocolate aroma. The taste is smokey and sour, but itís a bit thin and watery too. Actually I was thirsty tonight and drank it rather more quickly than I usually would with a stout. Went down all right.
Tuesday, May 02, 2006

White Star Black Panther 3.4
Cask @ Reading 06: Black with a tan head. Sweet cara, dark roast malts and nice chocolate. Pleasant.
Monday, May 01, 2006

White Star Majestic 2.1
Bottle. Golden colour with no head. Managed to avoid pouring the sediment, so it was a clear, good-looking pint. Nothing much to report about either aroma or taste. A hint of citrus, not particularly bitter. Altogether a drinkable but not very memorable beer.
Wednesday, April 26, 2006

White Star Dark Destroyer 3.7
Cask conditioned - gravity dispense - Banbury BF. A black coloured stout. The aroma is smoky and roasty. The taste is also very stout like with fishy notes, some soy, some roast and some smoke. Smooth and very tasty. My BOTF.
Monday, April 24, 2006

White Star Best Bitter 2.4
Cloudy amber beer with a frothy near-white head and large particles of sediment. The first aroma was vegetal, but it soon gave way to a more promising malt. Below average session ale. Watery and with mid to low bitterness.
Saturday, April 22, 2006

White Star Battleaxe 1.7
Bottle. Golden, orange with floaties and an off-white foam. Aromas are caramel malts with toffee and sour fruit - I assumed it is tainted, although looking at the other ratings, possibly not. Flavours are sweet and sour with oranges. Fairly hoppy. Still seems tainted to me.

White Star Majestic 2.3
Cask conditioned at The Old Fourpenny Shop Hotel, Warwick. Amber coloured with good head. White Star never fail to disapoint me, this looked a good beer, plenty of colour with stable head, drunk in an excellent establishment, but they still canít cut the mustard. Overwhelming flavour of stale tea across the beer, like a wet soggy blanket. There is an attempt at hopiness but it gets lost in the other off flavours. Not one for me.
