Midnight Sun Arctic Devil
Pours clear mahogany with a nice buttermilk head. Aroma features caramel, dark fruit, toasty malt. Flavor offers caramel, toasted malt, woody, chocolate notes. Texture yields firm body & lively fizz. The devil is in the barleywine.

Midnight Sun Berserker
Purchased at El Cerrito Liquor from Corona, California for $17.99, Berserker is an imperial stout with maple syrup and molasses, and aged in bourbon barrels brewed by Midnight Sun Brewing Company from Anchorage, Alaska. The scent of chocolate, roasted malt, maple syrup, molasses, espresso, red wine, dark fruit, and vanilla are noted as you drink. The appearance is pitch black that pours a low tan head that dissipates gradually with a minimal circular retention remaining and similar lacing. When held up to light, no light shines through. Dark mahogany shows when light reflects off the surface of the beer. The alcohol content is 12.7%. Chocolate is fairly rich, malty to the touch, and deepened by roasted malt. Molasses slightly syrups the drink, thickens the body, and applies a brown sugar tint and tinge to the malty comprehension. Maple syrup melds with the malty and molasses tandem, accompanied with a vanilla tone, and lingers upon the mouthfeel during the relatively dry finish. Oak imparts a charred tint that blends with the malty, molasses, and maple syrup combination. Espresso lightly bitters the take, and paints the chocolate, molasses, maple syrup, and charred composition. Bourbon subtly boozes the drink, warms the beverage, and administers a licorice spice to the finish. Shiraz wine gives off black cherry, blackberry, and tobacco hues to the chocolate, molasses, maple syrup, and char mixture. Prunes are discernible with the Shiraz, molasses, and char notes. Raisins are sensed during the chocolate, molasses, maple syrup, and bourbon finish. Berserker is a voluptuous barrel aged imperial stout. Chocolate and roasted malts, molasses, maple syrup, vanilla, oak, bourbon, Shiraz wine, prunes, and raisins merges into a glamorous craft beer. Molasses, maple syrup, and bourbon make it easy to drink this libation as espresso bitters the take. The Shiraz wine is jammy, intertwining with the molasses and maple syrup upon the malts, bourbon, espresso, prunes, and raisins. The malty, molasses, maple syrup, and jammy wine composition moderately weighs the body, which is accented by espresso. Chocolate, molasses, maple syrup, charred oak, tobacco like Shiraz wine, licorice infused bourbon, and raisins leaves a lasting impression upon the relatively dry finish. I cherished every single drink, and enamored by the jammy wine, molasses, and maple syrup combination upon this barrel aged imperial stout. Cheers. Prost. Drink for the love of beer. Midnight Sun Arctic Devil 2022 - Blanton's Bourbon
12 oz. bottle, pours a dark amber brown with a small beige head. Aroma brings out a nice rich bourbon character, followed by dark dried fruits and toffee. Flavour is much like the Wellers version: rich and complex, very similar to classic Arctic Devil, with big dark dried fruits, massive bourbon barrels, brandy, toffee, caramel, and brown sugar. The booze is obvious but reasonably incorporate into the barrel, with less spirit character than the Wellers and perhaps slightly more elegance. It's still rather hot and rough, but it's good and a tiny step above the Wellers.

Midnight Sun Arctic Devil 2022 - Weller Bourbon
12 oz. bottle, pours a deep dark brown with a small beige head. Aroma brings out big brandied dark dried fruits, big bourbon barrels, molasses, and brown sugar. Flavour is rich and complex, very similar to classic Arctic Devil, with big dark dried fruits, massive bourbon barrels, brandy, toffee, caramel, and brown sugar. The booze is obvious but reasonably nicely into the barrel / spirit character. Pretty nice stuff, though maybe a bit rougher and boozier than I remember.

Midnight Sun Leche Libre
12 oz. bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Nose is dominated by the horchata spice -- loads of cinnamon mostly, with some cocoa and a hint of pepper -- plus some port and oak barrels. Flavour is much the same, but has a dominant cola character, along with sweet chocolate, lots of cinnamon, and port barrels. Nice dark sugars combine with the cinnamon, cola and port notes on the finish. I'm not usually a fan of these spiced stouts, but this is pretty great.

At brewery, they just call it an NEIPA, but why quibble? Tasty brew. Copper penny color, solid bitterness with just enough malt to keep things sorta balanced.

Midnight Sun Red RyDer
12 oz. bottle, pours a cloudy dark rusted red with a medium beige head. Aroma brings out a deep, rich caramel malt character, with plenty of dark fruits and big resinous hops. Flavour is massive and very old school American barleywine-like, with loads of resinous hops, rich caramel malt, dark dried fruits, and a hint of spicy rye. Impeccably balanced despite its gravity. This reminds of American barleywines from the early 2010's: hoppier than most IPAs, yet has a humungous malt character. Excellent.

Midnight Sun 28
On tap at Midnight Sun, pours a cloudy deep dark amber / mahogany with a small beige head. Aroma is very expressive on the vanilla and cocoa upfront, with essentially no roast — not getting the oak either. Flavour is chocolatey upfront, with lots of milk chocolate, light vanilla and a hint of roast. Quite gentle for its high-gravity. The hops aren’t felt much, and the body is light. Tasty but I’ve never been super convinced by these pale stout.

Midnight Sun Break Up
On tap at Midnight Sun, pours a clear very pale golden brown it’s a small white head. Aroma is crunchy and earthy, bringing out the spelt, along with some lightly estery saison yeast. Flavour is spicy and earthy, with earthy saison yeast, some crunchy grittiness and light esters. The yeast doesn’t have an authentic saison expression — seems improperly used. Okay.

Midnight Sun Laid Back
On tap at Midnight Sun, pours a clear bright golden with a small white head. Aroma brings out bright Belgian yeast, light esters, candi sugar and some booze. Flavour is estery and boozy, with candi sugar, booze, and estery notes. The Belgian yeast isn’t harnessed so well, contributing more of an estery booziness than any depth or flavour complexity. It’s alright.

Bottle, thick, oily opaque beer, creamy dark tan foam faded. Aroma malt, toast, cookies, vanilla, spicy, peppery, touch of smoke. Taste malt, vanilla, cinnamon, pepper, cumin, chili, burnt sugar. At first, the spice it too much a lot, and maybe it’s just my palate dying, but it recedes, and tempers in the malt and vanilla, and there’s some sweet cherry and orange coming through, and then with the bourbon it reminds me of an old fashioned. Wild. Don’t stop at the first sip. Let it warm up.Oh yeah, palate rich and thick like a fleece blanky carbonation subdued.

I can taste the hops on the finish,.palate is thick and rich, but the fruitiness and vanilla lightens it up nicely, carbonation subdued.

Bottle shared by AKFaust. Colour…basic black with a thin tan head. Nose…darkly fruity with a lean towards prunes, black currants and dates. Palate…. Frothy, heady and deeply oaky with astringency and a ton of booze! The mid palate is very dry and has tons of grip! The finish is long, tight and darkly fruity.

Midnight Sun SOB Stout (Son Of Berserker)
22 oz. bottle from Best Damn Beer Shop. Pours a deep, dark, nearly opaque brown with a small tan head that settles into a ring and island of film with two ribbons tying it to the sides of the glass. Notes of roasted malts, dark chocolate, tobacco, earth, burnt brown sugar, and coffee grounds. Light-bodied, with low to modest carbonation and a roasty mouthfeel. Nice stout. Has held up well. I aged it too long so there's a hint of oxidation, but nothing much.

Bomber, split 2 ways. It's oily black and dark. has a 1 finger tan head. This is very good. Dense, creamy, heavy dark chocolate notes, charred fiery barrel notes. aroma is cocoa, peanuts, coconut. I'm getting a lot of base BCS or Hair of the Dog stouts flavors. Like everything has become super intense and thick and a little smokey char. mellow light smoke finish with hints of blackberry and cherry. Very nice but glad to have split it 2 ways.
