Rock Bottom La Jolla Autumn Equinox IPA
(En fût à la brasserie): Une infusion de thé dans une IPA robuste et épicée. Des agrumes sucrées habitent la structure maltée et fortement caramélisée. L’amertume est un tas de feuilles mortes, ça goûte l’automne.

Rock Bottom La Jolla Black Seal Oatmeal Stout

Rock Bottom La Jolla Ragtop Red Ale
(En fût à la brasserie): Des pelures de pommes, de la cendre, des houblons juteux bien installés et une finale sans histoire. La carbonatation est assez faible, trop à mon goût.

Rock Bottom La Jolla Pump House Pale Ale
(En fût à la brasserie): Un puissant zest d’agrume pale, un corps svelte et craquant, des composantes fruitées pleines de clarté et enrobées d’une eau dure. L’amertume est bien aiguisée et est à la limite. Belle surprise.

Rock Bottom La Jolla Whompin' Wheat
Draft at the Santee Bluegrass Festival. Not a huge fan of American wheat. It was not as hoppy as I had hoped based on the description. Wheat twang in both the aroma and the flavor.

Flavor is a touch on the sweet side, but there is a nice pine bitterness. Light grass and lots of toasted bread. Hints of caramel. A ton of floral hops and a decent bit of citrus.

Rock Bottom La Jolla North Star IPA
On tap @ Rock Bottom La Jolla. Rather amber pour with a white head. Super dank, piny, herbal aroma. Some grapefruit on the nose and a bit of grass. A lot of caramel and toasted bread too. Flavor is rather pungent and herbal. Super heavy on the pine flavor and bitterness. Light grass, a lot of grapefruit rind, and wood. Slight toasted bread and peach sweetness. Not bad, actually.

Rock Bottom La Jolla Old Curmudgeon Imperial Porter
September 10th, 2012 - Rock Bottom La Jolla’s lighter beers have been roundly disappointing, but as I move down the color spectrum, I find something much more pleasant to sip when I reach the Old Curmudgeon Porter. The smell of oak chips, applewood and smoked bacon comprise the smell, altogether reminding me of my one trip to a Korean BBQ restaurant. There’s a note of cherry flavored pipe tobacco, too. Though the aroma is slow and low, the flavor is busy and tangy. The bitterness of fresh greens sprouts in the mid to aftertaste, and some very slight touches of unripe raspberry and blackberry give this palate something to have for dessert, but it’s not overly sweet. This is, by far, the best sampler I’ve had from Rock Bottom’s La Jolla satellite so far.

Rock Bottom La Jolla Ragtop Red Ale
September 10th, 2012 - Matching the seasonal foliage everywhere else except La Jolla is the local Rock Bottom’s deep, rusty red Red Ale. The smell is filled with malts and the curious scent of a dusty, cool basement. I’d even go so far as to call it dank, save for a such of sweetness that reminds me of a carnival grade candied apple. A blend of caramel, toffee and some syrup form the core of the flavor, but it’s excessively sweet, bordering on candy like, with a bit of burnt sugar in there giving it an off flavor. There’s also a dash of pumpkin pie spice in the aftertaste, light and short, but not enough to mask or fix the over-candied taste.

Rock Bottom La Jolla Mary Jane IPA
September 10th, 2012 - Next in line to be sampled is Rock Bottom’s IPA. I don’t recall there being a label up on the chalk board, but that’s likely my own remission. What my notes describe most closely matches the Ratebeer page for the Mary Jane IPA, so that’s where I’ll stick this. The smell is predominantly grapefruit notes, but as usual wight else tiny only-slightly-bigger-than-thimble style glasses, it’s hard to smell. A little orange juice comes through in the smell, too, whereas the flavor has mostly a bubblegum taste with a dry hop resin pronounced in a very long aftertaste. It’s run of the mill IPA fare, but better than the lighter brews I’ve had here at Rock Bottom - La Jolla so far.

Rock Bottom La Jolla Devil's Thumb Belgian-Style Strong Golden Ale
Growler from Rock Bottom La Jolla. Different Rock Bottom’s brew this on site with small differences it seems. Nose is citrus, bubblegum, candisugar, a hint of cloves, and yeast. Hazy yellow with a medium, lightly lacing yellow tinged head. Flavor is very lightly bitter, light sweet caramelized sugar, and spicy. Definitely produced with a Belgian yeast.

Rock Bottom La Jolla Moonlight Porter
On tap @ Rock Bottom Long Beach. Almost black in color with a khaki. Big time roasted malt, cocoa powder, and a bit of chile pepper spiciness. Maybe coffee grounds? A bit of ash and earthy hops. Flavor is slightly bitter with a lot of roast, coffee grounds, and earthy hops. Kind of a smokey, spicy, savory taste as well. Lots of dark chocolate and coffee. Weird.

Tap at the brewpub. Pours darkly ruddy amber with a beige head. Aroma is strong mixed hop. Lots of resin for sure. Med body. Mild hop burn. Resin stands out of a mix. Finishes hoppy and bitter. Very nice.
