Rock Bottom Braintree Cinco de Mayo
Draft at Boston location. Pours a hazy yellow color with a white fizzy head. Nose is straw and a very preasant jalepeno note. Palate is lively and crisp. Flavor is somewhat sweet followed by a biting heat of jalepeno that gives it a nice touch of flavor without over powering.

Got this in a brewpub in Boston. Had a nice colour with a decent head. No real flavor except for the spice. I like spicy food though and this was sufficient in that regard. If you don’t like spicy food leave this one. If, on the other hand, you do like spices then be my guest.

Tap at the Brewpub (Boston location): Golden pour with good clarity and a white ring of head. Peppery juice aroma- straight jarred jalapeno resins and oils- nothing else. Flavor is the same- offering nearly no character but a burning sensation. I am a fan of spicy foods, but this offers no flavor, rather just a homogeneous burn from the pepper juice. No malt nuance or qualities of the base beer.

Rock Bottom Braintree Liquid Courage
AKA Liquid Happiness, pouring at the Rock Bottom, Boston, MA location. Liquid Happiness is an English Strong Ale by style, it is an excellent one. This style is brewed up during the cold winter months as a "winter warmer", and makes for an excellent beer to take the chill off those cold Boston winter days and nights. Strong ales are of course stronger in alcohol, but they also have more malt heft, and are more hop character than the average bitter or ESB. Liquid Happiness is brewed with imported British malts and hops, and comes in at a warming 7.6% abv. This was the perfect afternoon beer to have as I walked off my lunch at Jacob Wirth(see my review for details) and was the perfect beer to sit and relax with at the bar. Liquid Happiness pours to a beautiful, bright, deep copper color, with a slight white head, and a soft to moderate amount of carbonation. The nose on this beer is wonderful, with lots of sweet and bready malt aromas paired with some peppery notes of alcohol. The palate is full and lush on the tongue, with sweet, toffee/caramel malt flavors, and subtle jammy fruit flavors. Liquid Happiness finishes with more sweet malt, toffee, and fruit up front, then ends with a malty, peppery alcohol burn that lingers. This is a great sipping beer, perfect for the cold weather, and a great after work brew to enjoy at the bar at Rock Bottom, or a great after dinner drink.

Rock Bottom Braintree Liquid Courage
On tap at Braintree location, from a snifter. Ok nose, sweet. Subtle but complex. Got some cardboard when cold, but that faded quickly. Dried fruits, plum & raisin, cocoa, buttercreme, caramel, brown sugar. Dark orangy brown color that slowly faded, good head with some lacing. Bittersweet flavors, like aroma, thought the malts took on a more of a molasses flavors. Had some citrus when rolled on tongue. Medium body, creamy oily mouthfeel, sweet dry finish, though it’s the 9.3% doing the drying. Gave me a little burn when touched my lips. Tasty BW though would like to see some age mellow this abit.

Rock Bottom Braintree Cinco de Mayo
Draught @ Bethesda: Pale golden yellow with a small, frothy white head. Aroma is dominated by fresh jalapeño pepper, smells so potent and fresh that I’m hesitant to take a first sip for fear of the heat. There’s also a hint of toasted malt and grain in there as well. Light, crisp body, medium forced carbonation. At first taste I’m quite surprised - the Jalapeño flavor is not dominant at all, nor is it overwhelmingly hot (like previous chili beers I’ve tried). Instead the Jalapeño adds a nice light fruity pepper flavor, with a hint of greens and very mild heat to the lightly sweet grain/toasted malt notes. Finishes clean and crisp, no off flavors, with a slight hint of fruity(not spicy) pepper. Very drinkable (I had a 2nd glass). I talked to the brewer and this was simply 1/2lb of diced Jalapeños added to a keg of their light, conditioned for about 48hrs.

Rock Bottom Braintree Boston Fog Lager
Just to prevent confusion, this is a Braintree beer that is called "Boston Fog Lager", not a Rock Bottom Boston, Fog lager. Cask conditioned at NERAX 4/28/2005
Hazy orange-gold-amber. High head retention. Perfumey hops aroma and flavor of perhaps saaz? Peaches and nectarines from the yeast as well. Flavor is muddled, light dirty dishwater, peaches, lager yeast on the finish. Quite flat, watery, light body. Definitely a valiant attempt at a cask steam beer.

Extreme Beer Fest 2004: Clear yellow with a small white head. Strong green jalapenos in the aroma, watery texture, deep burning flavor. Certainly not everyone's idea of a good beer, but this is a good spicy hot beer.

Extreme Beer Fest Boston 2004: Has a clear golden color and jalapenoes smell. Taste is kind of light malts, but the finish hits you with the jalapenoes and a lingering spiciness. Overall this would be great with Mexican food, but man talk about heartburn, good stuff...

Draft @ extreme beer fest'04: Nice nose Jalapenoes and toasted malt. Kinda corn bread. Clear golden color. Nice mix of jalapenoes and malts. Again like drinking a liquid corn bread. I seem to get a little cheddar in there too. Very drinkable, leaves a great spice on the tounge. Can see why Scott won award for this. If you live in the area you have to try this sometime.
