Bottle at Trineesh’s wedding beach barbeque thing. More to my liking than the pale ale: only a smidgen stronger at 6%, a lighter but not really less tasty malt layer and a reasonable hoppy bitterness and flavour. This was more of a generic crafty hop flavour, perhaps vaguely citrus fruit, than a standout or unusual flavour (the website proclaims a blend of Galaxy/Citra/Simcoe/Millenium), but it was cleanly executed and actually a bit smashable.

Kona Fire Rock Pale Ale
Bottle, from the bottle at Trineesh’s wedding beach barbeque. This probably suffered from being over cold from the ice bucket it was swimming in but improved to be pleasant enough as it warmed, some sweetish malt and a muted floral hop finish. A bit dull though - and as with so many American Pales I don’t really get the point of this being 5.8%, the easy drinking flavour profile is out of whack with such a strong beer.

Kona Lemongrass Luau
Bottle. Pours a bright golden yellow color, lots of bubbles, medium white head. Smells bright and spicy with citrus, lemon, and florals. Clean and crisp taste is sweet with a little herbal spiciness. Lemon and light citrus. Has a little bit of a spritzer/shandy feel to it. I liked this much more that I thought I would.

Rating #2172 - Clear golden amber pour with a weak, white head that bubbles away to a ring. Aroma is strong with citrus overtones, grapefruit, lemony, toasted malt. Taste is more of the same, dry piney hops and roast malts dominating the flavour, with a hint of sweetness. Finish is dry, but balanced and satisfying. Delicious.

Kona Pipeline Porter
Bottle. Moderate toasted, bread dark chocolate and strong coffee for the malt, light resin for the hops, light earth for the yeast, with a hint of smokiness in the background. Head is small, creamy, light tan with good slippery lacing and is mostly lasting. Color is very dark brown. Flavor starts lightly acidic, then finishes lightly acidic and moderately bitter. Palate is light to medium, slick with a soft to lively carbonation and a dry finish. A solid Porter with everything in the right place.

Kona Castaway IPA

Hazy golden brew with small fast fading head. Smell and taste is dominated by citrus hops. Good brew that now makes me wish I had gone ahead and got the whole six pack. Just picked up a single sampler bottle, but next trip to the store I will get that six pack.

Out of the bottle poured a deep black, opaque, with a thin lasting tan head. I got notes of coffee, chocolate, cola, sweet roasted malt, and blackstrap molasses. No hops that I could detect, but some slight roasted malt bitterness. Surprisingly light bodied and drinkable.

Keg at the Bootlegger, 05/09/16. Light shade of yellow with a decent white cap. Nose is lemongrass, straw, grains, light spice Taste comprises perfume, lemon, straw, tossed grains, a noticeable ginger bite, herbal. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Decent for style, a nice palate cleanser but I couldn’t drink a lot of this one.

Kona Lemongrass Luau
Completely clear golden coloured body with a very small, two centimetre tall pure white head. Aroma of lemongrass (surprise, surprise), light malt, hay, grass, funk, citrus and a bit of yeast. Light-bodied; Strong lemongrass and herb funk noticeable up front with some very light malt and wheat, a taste of the alcohol warmth and even some ginger noticeable with a pretty big kick at the end. Aftertaste is centred around the ginger and the lemongrass of course, with a definite kick and pungency throughout, but perhaps in a good way - strong in the spice/herb characteristic. Overall, a nice and refreshing beer - especially for the summer months and definitely while in Kailua-Kona. I sampled this stubby twelve ounce bottle purchased from Giant Food in Falls Church, Virginia on 16-June-2016 for US$1,99 sampled at home in Washington on 04-September-2016 after spending the summer visiting the Kona Brewpub in Kailua-Kona a few weeks earlier!

Bottle from the Architect, Cambridge. Dark gold with a touch of amber. Small white head. Light metallic smell. Some melon and a touch of resin. Tastes sweet with a slight bitter hint. A bit gluey in the aftertaste. Nicely carbonated body but that doesn’t save the beer from being pretty mediocre.

Bottle from World Beer Market (Sake no Taniguchi). Nose of ginger, some citrusy notes. Hazy medium gold straw. Ginger again, as the first flavor, then some light topical fruitiness, sugar, and more ginger in finish. Thin body. Ginger isn’t overdone, but it does dominate. Lemongrass is barely apparent.
