Taedonggang Beer Brewery Reviews

Taedonggang 2 Black Label 2.2
Bottle (대동강맥주 2, 620 ml) from Potonggang Department Store, Pyongyang. - The name "black label“ is a bit misleading - the label is actually the same as the Taedonggang "green label“’s, the only difference being the small circle with the „2“ which has a black background, not a green one as it is the case with the other beer. But is it really a different beer? The back label gives the ABV as "5%이상" which means above 5%, not 5% as stated here. - Deep golden, nearly amber, good head. Aroma of caramel, biscuits and some rough hops which remind me of some cheap German supermarket Pilsener. Taste is a bit empty, with pronounced residual sweetness and blunt hops with notes of wet leaves. Medium carbonation, slightly salty mouthfeel. Rather sweet aftertaste with rough bitterness but without nice hop aromas. - I tried this together with Taedonggang 2 green label, and I didn’t taste any difference. For me, this is the same beer sold under two slightly different labels. But while the green label is sold in foreign currency stores, international hotels and restaurants, the black label can be found in ordinary North Korean shops.

Taedonggang 2 Yellow Label 2.2
Durchaus trinkbar.

Taedonggang 2 Black Label 1.2
Gift from CC, thank you! Great to try north Korea, but to be honest, this taste like most other south east Asian beer. Corns, no hops and bland.

Taedonggang 2 Yellow Label 2.9
Bottles from many places across the DPRK whilst on my tour of the country. Pours golden with good 2 finger head. Aroma of biscuit and some honey. Initial biscuity malt on the taste then some light grainy notes, sweetness comes through the most though, a nice and sweet aftertaste.

Taedonggang 2 Black Label 2.6
Bottles from most places across the DPRK. Probably the most common beer I saw whilst touring around there. Golden in colour, decent 2 fingered head. Corny aroma with malts and some grass. Corny start, then some light malts and a crisp, grassy finish, some honey sweetness in there too. Nice!

Taedonggang 2 Yellow Label 2
Had the pleasure of drinkings this when a neighbor smuggled this home from North Korea. Pretty standard simple lager, but the use of corn is notable. Its pretty sweet.

Taedonggang 2 Yellow Label 2.2
Pours a yellow color with a thin white head. Aromas are malty, grassy and kind of sweety. Short aftertaste. A boring industrial lager who would deserve an overall 5/20 if not coming from North Korea !!

Taedonggang 2 Yellow Label 2
Bottle. (huge thanks to Björn who bought this one in North Korea) Clear golden with a medium white head. Fairly sweet with malt, some notes of cardboard and pepper. Light body with a short aftertaste. Boring but drinkable.

@basunen: tack till Gyllenbock. Ölet har en tydlig malig ton. Svag smak av svartpeppar annars ganska blekt. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Taedonggang 2 Black Label 3
640ml bottle in North Korea. The commonest North Korean Beer. Golden amber, reasonable head. Corn malt aroma & flavour. Bitter sweet aftertaste. Decent lager.

Taedonggang 2 Yellow Label 3.9
640ml bottle in North Korea. Rich golden amber, good head. Biscuit grain aroma. Biscuit grain malt flavour. Smooth with sweet aftertaste. Good well balanced beer. Best mass produced beer in North Korea. Rating applies to the first bottle I tried. Subsequent bottles not so good.

Taedonggang 11P 1.8
I have been avoiding beer on this trip to Asia (since so much of it is so poor) but couldn’t pass up the chance to pay $10 for a bottle of North Korean beer. A fairly standard pale lager. Drinkable but only memorable because of its rarity.

Taedonggang 2 Yellow Label 1.3
640 ml bottle. 11128:2009. Courtesy of mjs. Big thank you!
Clear pale golden colour with small white head. Rice, malt, some sweetness, glue and starch in aroma. Flavour is quite bad to be honest. There’s rice, mild bitterness, rubber and starch. This is the first and best North Korean beer I’ve had and I believe it’s also the last one. Not a pleasant one.

Taedonggang 2 Yellow Label 1.3
(Bottle, 0.64 l, 20121208) Thanks Petri for bringing me this bottle. The beer poured golden and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had rubber, rice, starch and sweetness. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were rice, sweetness, malts and low bitterness. Aftertaste didn’t last long and was sweet. A bad example of beer.

Taedonggang 11P 2.5
Rating is probably biased by the fact that I was drinking it in a revolving restaurant in Pyongyang, so it is probably not as good as the numbers suggest. Yellow pour, fairly creamy head which dissipated quickly. A little corn and grass on the nose. Quite dry, similar to South Korean/Japanese lagers. Not at all awful - quite pleasantly surprised.

Taedonggang 11P 2
PoUrs yellow with a thin head. Mild skunky hop aroma. Flavor is nice a little thin with mild hops. Not bad at all. Tastes like most Asian lagers, but it is put together very well. Thank you Patrick & Carly & the all the other people along the way who handled this beer to get it to me. Thanks again.

Taedonggang 11P 2.4
Bottle, thanks to Cole. I can genuinely say that this is a country I would never have a rating from. Very classy green bottle, with no English on the label whatsoever. Pours clear pale yellow into my Minneapolis Town Hall glass; thick and foamy white head, poor lacing. Nose is skunky hops, fresh creamed corn, a bit of metal. Flavours of clean earth, creamed corn, really no major faults here... No DMS, no diacetyl, honestly quite pretty- a total surprise!

Taedonggang 11P 1.2
A dry lager similar to south Korean crap lagers. Nothing remarkable here except for the novelty

Taedonggang Beer 2.3
Bottle shared at my house. Pours pale yellow. Dear leader says the nose/taste is barley, corn chips and grain. Clean finish. Medium body. Much better than expected. I’m not sure if that’s a compliment to North Korean brewers or proof at just how bad most macro swill is.

Taedonggang Beer 2.6
Bottle at a tasting at James’ place courtesy of James and his giant cellar. Pours a lightly hazed gold with a medium to large white head. Looks like a perfectly serviceable beer, would be nice looking as a saison. Smells like old grain and minerals, and very faintly of old corn chips, with the faintest hint of smoke. All hail the 령도자가 갖추어야 할 풍모를 완벽하게 지닌 친애하는 지도자 because this is actually drinkable. Nothing I’d want to put on tap in my house, but quite honestly if there was a keg of this in my neighbors backyard on a hot summer day, I would certainly not turn it down, and more than likely would spend a happy afternoon around the pool with an ever refilling pint glass. Long grainy finish. Toast and grain. Easy drinking.

Taedonggang 11P 2.6
Comrade SHIG, I salute you. Following the passing of Kim Jong-Il, Solan and I raised our glasses in honor of our departed red bretheren. A full-frontal assault on the olfactory sense, from the most loyal of communist skunks, left me praising Chairman Mao. The flavor is packed with the finest rice from rural Pyongyang, and the sweat from fairly compensated laborers. Joseph Stalin, himself, would be proud to quaff this brew with his comrads.

Taedonggang 11P 2.2
Courtesy Shig. Lightstruck pale lager. Dry finish. Balanced body. Middle of the road, as expected. Cool as hell to try a commie beer though. Thanks Shig!

Taedonggang 11P 3
500ml bottle-@Tampa weekly shared by SHIG-pours a white head with yellow/gold color. Aroma is lemon/grass, euroskunk (lager), hay/light malt. Taste is lemon/grass hops, hay/light malt. Wow, from North Korea a quite drinkable beer.

Taedonggang 11P 2.6
Bottle shared from SHIG, came in a green bottle, that poured a hazy light yellow color, with a straw, hoppy aroma. Flavor was the same as the aroma. SHIG warned us about it the whole night, but it wasn’t the worst beer that I had, nor the worst of the night....

Taedonggang 11P 2.5
Bottle: Picked this up at the DMZ. Straight from the first pop I thought this could be interesting. The flood of skunk cock filled the room. Poured a clear golden color with huge white foam head, that seemed to not stop. The aroma seemed of stale sour grain. The flavor and taste however was not bad as it had metallic grain and fresh grass, a little watery. Not bad for as little as there is from North Korea.

Taedonggang Beer 3.5
After years stuck with South Korean formaldehyde-tasting beers, Daedonggang is a refreshing treat. Though obviously not the greatest beer in the world, it does have a refreshing natural taste. Sometimes you get a bottle that tastes a little different; I remember my first samples of it having a definitive lawn-clippings flavour. After a couple years of the Lee Myungbag administration, it is available in the South again in a limited capacity. I recommend following it immediately with a Cass, or "going downstream" as I call it.

Taedonggang 15P 2.6
Judging by the label, this appears to be Pyongyang Beer, not Daedonggang. I’m curious the justification for calling it Daedonggang 15p. I tried it in North Korea, and it was alright, nowhere near the best I had, but head-over-heels better than any major South Korean beer.

Taedonggang 11P 2.5
500 ml bottle bought in a DMZ gift shop. Pale golden with a small head. Malty and hoppy aroma. Flavours are moderately bitter. Not the worst pale lager in the market.

Taedonggang 15P 2.5
Pretty average stuff, which was an amazing surprise. Lacked the off taste of a beer made mostly from rice, and even had the start of a head. Hazy, which was a surprise for any lager, but it actually left the start of lacing, which was a delight in an Asian lager. Noes of malt and hops in the nose. Taste of malt, floral hops, even some hop bitterness. No depth of course, but the lack of seriously off flavors was something to celebrate.

Taedonggang Beer 1.4
Clear golden coloured body with a light white head. Aroma of oddness - old malt, stale corn, metal and tin - nothing pleasant at all. Light-bodied; Strong pungent metal and tin flavours with some stale malt and very light hops and sugars. Aftertaste is strong and unpleasant - too much funky malt. Overall, a pretty bad beer, but I was pretty much expecting this! Obviously, I sampled this one just because it was the only beer on the menu from North Korea - just to have sampled a beer from here! I sampled this odd (large) sized bottle purchased at a bar in the Itaewon area of Seoul, South Korea in July 2006.

Taedonggang 11P 2.2
640ml bottle at 4,5% with a different label. Hazy (!) straw colored with a small white head. Nice rather hoppy pilsner aroma, mild and fresh. Mild and a bit buttery in the flavor with some hops in the background. Not bad at all and definately one of the better international lagers I have tasted. Nice to see an unfiltered one :)

Taedonggang Beer 3.1
Pours straw color with a thin white head. Smells peppery and tea like with some sweet malty hints. Tastes sweet with some stray grassy hoppy hints. Decent.

Taedonggang Beer 5
Compared to ALL south-korean brands Taedonggang Beer is heaven. Preferably enjoyed in Yanggakdo’s "Tea Room"

Taedonggang Beer 2
Bottled. A golden beer with a OK light orangey head. The aroma is sweet malty with notes of metal, and so is the flavor, though added a light note of caramel. Thanks ompher for sharing.

Taedonggang Beer 0.8
0.64 l bottle (Taedonggang 12), thanks Sami! Pale golden color with almost no head. Sweetish, sugary and lemony aroma with notes of fruity esters and alcohol. Grainy vegetal flavor with hints of lemon, herbal hops and glue. Low bitterness. Not much positive to say.

Taedonggang Beer 1.4
Bottle, Stockholm Beer Festival 2007 afterfestival at Per’s
Blond color. The aroma, light, has light veggies too. The rest is useless, not even bitter.

Taedonggang Beer 1.2
My Dad picked this up for me in South Korea. 500 ml green bottle, with a date (?) of 20061110. Pours a clear golden-orange (darker than expected) with a thin white head that quickly goes to a very small collar.

The aroma is sweet corn malts with a little metallic skunkiness.

The flavor is sweet corn malts with very little bitterness at the end. The mouthfeel is medium and very watery (yet oily and chalky) with low carbonation.

Overall, a typical pale lager - a little on the sweet side with a weird texture.

Taedonggang Beer 1.4
Golden color, small white head. Grassy hoppy nose. Sweet corn/rice grain flavor. Quite "normal" low quality lager from poor country.

Taedonggang Beer 1.5
Bottled (thanks omhper!). Pale golden colour with small white head. Aroma & flavour is maize, butter and some hayish notes. Also a bit of malt. Not very exciting, but also this was a nice country to rate .)

Taedonggang Beer 1.5
(Bottle, thanks omhper) Pours pale golden with a white head. Corn and butter in aroma but also a hint of hay and malt. Malty and grainy flavour with a light grassy bitterness. Buttery and watery mouthfeel. Light body.

Taedonggang Beer 1.9
Bottled, thanks Bov! Pale golden, rich head. Appley aroma. Sweet and buttery, medium bodied with soft mouthfeel. Finishes with low bitterness. A malt sweet standard lager with little to separate it from lagers elsewhere. At least it has more substance than it’s counterparts in South Korea.

Taedonggang Beer 2.1
Thanks to my wife who dragged this back from the DMZ for me. Pale golden beer with a thick white head. Pale malt aroma, lightly worty with a touch of grassiness as well. Sweetish, but fairly fresh with a low bitterness and little in the way of hop flavour. A decent, if pedestrian, pale lager.

Taedonggang Beer 1.9
courtesy of Jean-Yves Reutter and Laurent Mousson - clear and bright golden colour, almost no foam; unclean cheesy nose, phenolic and wet carton; aggressive carbonation, qujie sweet, medium-bodied, short paperboard-like and moderately malty finish - weird

Taedonggang Beer 2.6
From bottle. Was so surprised to see some beers from the brewery already on the site. Well maybe not to surprised. Typical bitter aroma with that familiar lager hint. Crisp white head with a yellow orange glow. Smooth rich taste, better than I had expected. Drinkable lager from Korea. Well done.

Taedonggang 11P 2.6
Medium white lasting head. Clear yellow body. Sweetish malty aroma with a touch of honey or grape juice. Taste is sweet malts with floral hop background. Grainy aftertaste. A bit watery. No off taste. Faint bitterness. Decent. (0.5l bottle.)

Taedonggang 15P 3
I would to shout out, HEY I DRANK NORTH KOREAN BEER. It wasnt half bad either. Poured deep amber with a off white head that diminishes. Malt is well roasted and hops are well balanced, not overpowering but there. A little rye and rice flavor, but the overall effect is not of one or the other. I really enjoyed this beer, I will probably support a corrupt system again and partake again.

Taedonggang 11P 2.9
First of all, thanks to everyone who made this rating possible - Simon, Mark, Andre and of course Kim Jong-Il, who had the vision to purchase the Usher’s brewery to improve the Pyongyang beer scene.

Light amber colour. Faint whisp of head dies quickly. Industrial-sized bubbles. The aroma is clean, mainly biscuity pale malt. The flavour is fairly clean as well, still leaning towards the malt, though it’s not as expressive as in the aroma. The beer is fairly sweet and full-bodied. The hops are restricted to a background earthy note. Yes, it looks terrible, but its one of the most enjoyable pale lagers in its weight class.
