Sapporo Kanpai Ale
Can from Family Mart. Drank from the can. Faint herbal aromas with some light overripe apricot and wet paper. Sweet and not much flavor on the palate, slightly watery. Thin bodied and finishes with an almost headache inducing chemical sweetness. No, this is not good.

Sapporo Yebisu Premium Black
Bottled 334ml. -Almost black coloured, small to medium sized brownish head, mild coffee in the nose. Light roasted malt, mild chocolate and coffee, some dusty toffee and rather sweet finish. Also mild roastiness in the finish. Bit too sweet but ok.

350 ml can bought at YATA in MOKO, Mong Kok.

Clear golden orange colour; Three-quarter finger head with soapy white foam which fades in 30 secopnds; Moderate sticky lacing with very slight carbonation; Fragrant aroma of full malt, with honey, orange, strong floral, molasses, bread, lemon, and strong grass; Close to medium sweet taste of full malt, with orange, light honey, strong floral, sugar, light bread, lemon, medium bitter hops and strong sharp grass; Mid to light body. Slick and smooth palate; Mouth feel is full Pils malt in a solid background. Nice light orangey taste matched nicely with strong floral and honey. Sweetness is quite strong but countered well by grassy hoppiness. Light bready with strong lemon to round. Good!... Hoppiness is orange, strong floral, lemon and strong grass in nose and taste; Bitterness is fairly strong for a lasting, mid to high astringent sweet malty finish; Fairly dry after taste. Flowery, sweet and quite bitter to mouth.

Comments: This one’s smell and taste like a Helles probably not by design, as the maltyness is a richer, fuller version of macro Japanese beer with carboed, orangey fruity characters ("Suntory The Premium Malt’s Kaoru Ale" comes to mind). Malty, flowery, strong hoppy but a bit airheaded. Very drinkable but can be better!

Sapporo Mugi to Hoppu Platinum Clear

350 ml can bought at YATA in MOKO, Mong Kok.

Piss light golden yellow colour; Half finger head and soapy white foam which fades in 20 seconds; Fair sticky lacing with active small carbonation; Aroma of malt, with grains, strong floral, strong molasses, bread, lemon and strong grass; Mid to light sweet taste of fair malt, with barley grains, light sourness, light barley spirit, floral, light molasses, light bread, lemon, light bitter hops and fairly strong grass; Mid to light body. Slick palate; Mouth feel is fair maltyness in a slightly soapy background. Slightly grainy and with traces of grain spirits, but not as strong as others from the “Mugi To Hoppu” line-up. Notable sourness, not quite off but nagging, with light floral and light sweetness. Notable lemon to round. Sorta okay… Hoppiness is strong floral, lemon and strong grass in nose and taste; Bitterness is light to fair for an abrupt, moderate light astringent malty finish; Fairly dry after taste; Lemony and light bitter to mouth.

Comments: Seems to be a par below the “Mugi To Hoppu The Gold”, while it’s grainess and spirit are lighter, so are the maltyness with that slightly annoying sour taste. Still drinkable but not recommended.

From a convenience store. Eminently drinkable, perfect mix of mass market availability and craft style. Very balanced hops and bitterness with an extremely smooth finish. It’s what every mass produced ale wishes it was.

Sapporo Beer Surprise Shifuku no Nigami
Drank straight from the can. Perfumey, grassy hops with some herbal notes. Bread on the palate at first then a rush of hops. Tons of pepper and a bitterness overload....like popping raw goya in your mouth. Hmmmm, I like it, but it is a little overboard. At least it has flavor.

Clear golden with fluffy white head. Aroma is some dust, melon, grassy stuff, the dust is quite subtle and doesnt ruin it. Taste is more dust, some sour paper and the normal lager bitterness. Finish is the same as the taste. Too little carbonation, not very fresh, not really drinkable due to the dusty character. Well it is not completely bad but not good either...

Sapporo Kanpai Ale
Can from convenience store. Light sweet fruity nose, some vegetal-like note, starchy malt powder mix. Medium straw color, frothy head. Thin fruity initial, peach maybe, starchy light sweetness in mid palate, small rough hit of bitterness in late mid, and an innocuous mild finish. Thin-medium body, a bit thick perhaps. This one is lightened up with the Japanese majors’ favorite combo: rice-corn-starch. Not too bad, though....really.

Sapporo Kanpai Ale
Can from a convenient store. Rather stale nose of dank veggies, peaches, oranges, biscuity malt. Clear oily gold. Fruity, dank, some citrus. Really dull fruit flavors with some heavy, oily malts. Very mild, though at least not too sweet. Heavy, oily body. No idea what they were aiming for with this.

Skunky aroma up front, Slight hazy straw color with medium carbonation Typical typical skunky pale lager taste with some adjust qualities, a fizzy on the tongue finish from the very active carbonation.... overall not a bad beer definetely much better the asahi i just recently tried, but i think i might already be burned out on trying these asian wannabe import beers.

The only special thing about this beer is the size of the can it’s in: 65cl. Apart from that it’s a generic malty lager. Just that it costs 5 Euros instead of 1 because it’s from Japan.

Can. Pours a clear copper, disappearing off-white head. Aroma of caramel and earthy malt, kind of a dusty citrus, not bright, a touch of pine. Sweet flavour of pine and chocolate, dirt, caramel. Full feel, lots of carbonation, mid-palate chewiness, little IPA hop bitterness. Got ok towards the end. Juggling an amber, brown ale, and PA, don’t go for it if you want an IPA.

It has an unpleasant, nondescript bitterness like when you put all the hops in at the start of the boil. I’d rather have a regularly bitter Japaness macro.

Sapporo Black
Can (sample from local rep). This is not retired -- or if it is, it’s coming back as a zombie to eat your beer brains. Pours a medium brown-black with a shallow, fine-grained, light brown head. Nose is light coffee, chocolate, smoke, molasses, and rye bread. On the tongue, it’s smoked chocolate and rye bread, with a little coffee bitterness; it’s a very well-behaved and demure schwarzbier, with nothing to offend anyone. Finish is clean. It’s not a standout, but it’s also not bad at all. With Kuronama Dark going away, we have to take what we can get.

Can. Light citrus aroma, with (yes, and it’s unusual) strawberries, and a small bit of spirits. Clear bright gold amber, thin filmy head. Mild indeterminate fruitiness, spirits intrude a little in mid palate, and it floats away to nothing. Thin-mdium body. Well, what do you know.... a "daisan saison." floral, citrus, cereal, golden, clear, frothy, light sweetness, lightly bitter, thin feel, soft carbonation. Soft malty aroma, some nice flowery notes. Smooth in the mouth, softly sweet giving way to lingering bitterness. Hides the 6% a.b.v. quite well. Personally a bit headache inducing; every once and a while some of these Japanese majors just rub my brain the wrong way. Objectively though it’s a reasonable choice.
