Sapporo Breweries Craft Label Kaori Odoru Juggling IPA
Can. Pours a clear copper, disappearing off-white head. Aroma of caramel and earthy malt, kind of a dusty citrus, not bright, a touch of pine. Sweet flavour of pine and chocolate, dirt, caramel. Full feel, lots of carbonation, mid-palate chewiness, little IPA hop bitterness. Got ok towards the end. Juggling an amber, brown ale, and PA, don’t go for it if you want an IPA.

Hai!!!

35cl can. Light golden color, clear, disappointing enough! Big soapy white head, reducing. Aroma of grains, wheat, spices (coriander, orange peel), starch/chemical, light grass. Light body, watery texture. Sweetish taste. Seems to be a flavored lagher. Not bad itself but not really fitting the style.

From the can. Fake Belgian saison but does have some light saison elements indeed, mildly fruity, floral and peppery notes, fairly quaffable. Not half bad for the price really, would probably down another one on a hot humid day.

It has an unpleasant, nondescript bitterness like when you put all the hops in at the start of the boil. I’d rather have a regularly bitter Japaness macro.

Sapporo Black
Can (sample from local rep). This is not retired -- or if it is, it’s coming back as a zombie to eat your beer brains. Pours a medium brown-black with a shallow, fine-grained, light brown head. Nose is light coffee, chocolate, smoke, molasses, and rye bread. On the tongue, it’s smoked chocolate and rye bread, with a little coffee bitterness; it’s a very well-behaved and demure schwarzbier, with nothing to offend anyone. Finish is clean. It’s not a standout, but it’s also not bad at all. With Kuronama Dark going away, we have to take what we can get.

Can from Sapporo Station souvenir shop. Slightly malty nose, touch of biscuit, some citrus and grass. Clear gold, tall, fine head. Somewhat sweet, maliter than the the Tohoku and Hokkaido version, bread, crackers, light citrus. Quite drinkable, not so thin. Decent.

Draught @ Yebisu Beer Museum, Tokyo. Dark ruby (almost black) colour with huge tan head. (Looks like Guinness Stout). Very smooth taste, this probably doesn’t have any roasted barly. Doesn’t taste dry at all. Which is just good in my opinion.

Can. Light citrus aroma, with (yes, and it’s unusual) strawberries, and a small bit of spirits. Clear bright gold amber, thin filmy head. Mild indeterminate fruitiness, spirits intrude a little in mid palate, and it floats away to nothing. Thin-mdium body. Well, what do you know.... a "daisan saison." I suppose it had to happen at some point.

floral, citrus, cereal, golden, clear, frothy, light sweetness, lightly bitter, thin feel, soft carbonation. Soft malty aroma, some nice flowery notes. Smooth in the mouth, softly sweet giving way to lingering bitterness. Hides the 6% a.b.v. quite well. Personally a bit headache inducing; every once and a while some of these Japanese majors just rub my brain the wrong way. Objectively though it’s a reasonable choice.

citrus, floral, golden, clear, light sweetness, light body, thin feel, lively, astringent. Nice fruity aroma; fairly natural citrus. Thin, dry, and effervescent, very easy to drink. A bit watery, but refreshingly so. There’s not a whole lot here, but it’s perfectly innocuous for an easy summer brew.

grass, cereal, golden, clear, lightly sour, medium sweetness, medium body. Grassy, apple-juice aroma. Quite sour as it hits the tongue, giving into a sweetness that fills the belly more than the relatively simple taste warrants. Unnecessarily heavy.

Can. Small grassy hop nose, also quite malty, ripe apples, and yeast. Slightly sourish initial, and then moves to rather high sugary sweetness, sugar crackers, bit of citrus, and a mild sweet finish. Medium body (a bit heavy for style). Drinkable, to be sure. But certainly too sweet. Has a kind of cheap feeling to it.

Can. Decent aroma, strawberries, bit of citrus, but with some macro maltiness there too. Taste is not as good, thin, some fruitiness but mostly blandness. Like the others in this series, I’d choose them over some of the usual macros, but would rather drink bad craft beer. Seems I missed the Gold Belg. Not so sad... Feels a little like it might cause a hangover.

Drank from the can on the train. Golden, I assume. Has a slightly grainy, biscuity pale malt character, with low bitterness and just a touch of blackberry or currant hop note in the finish. So upscale pale lager...a good choice if you’re thirsty, because of that touch of finishing hop.

Golden color. Nice cereal malts in the nose with kinda distinctive house Yebisu yeast. Full body, slightly sour with lots of cereal, not so hugely hoped. I would say Export lager. Finishes fast. Was very refreshing first couple of sips as it was nice and cold, but soon I realized this was a fading star and its true mediocrity came out.

Can. Pours a gold-bronze, similar to the can. Large head becomes low and dense till the end. Crackery malt and grassy hop aroma, a deep whiff gives some herb. Nicely balanced flavour between sweet malt and grassy hop with a little tang, herb. Light and crisp, good level of bitterness. Would have again.

Drunk from can. Once the mustiness clears, ok aroma of malt, grassy hop, pepper, herb. Very bitter, hits midway and rides out, quite unpleasant really, acrid and metallic fizz. Like trying VB as a teen. Doughy malt, peppery. The bitterness coats the tongue, medicinal herb bite. Can’t say I enjoyed this much.
