Sapporo Beer Surprise Shifuku no Nigami
Drunk from can. Once the mustiness clears, ok aroma of malt, grassy hop, pepper, herb. Very bitter, hits midway and rides out, quite unpleasant really, acrid and metallic fizz. Like trying VB as a teen. Doughy malt, peppery. The bitterness coats the tongue, medicinal herb bite. Canít say I enjoyed this much.

Sapporo Beer Surprise Shifuku no Nigami
Can. Light malts, moderate pleasant fruitiness, grass, noble hop. Bright gold straw color. Pale malt, bread, crackers. The hops (Hallertauer, I think) really intensify in mid palate...almost to the point of unpleasantness. Thin-medium body. Interesting beer, and very highly-hopped-up, beer from a Japanese major.

Sapporo Beer Surprise Shifuku no Nigami
500 ml can. A bit excited here. The English name is stupid as hell, but the Japanese is intriguing: Bitter Joy. I wonder. Itís all malt, thankfully. Noble hop nose, peppery and herbal. Crisp, crackery malts. Clear gold with a medium head. Flavor is coming across something like a north German pils. It is quite bitter indeed, with some peppery spice, a touch of lemon, and herbs. Malts are not at all sweet, but crackery and light. This is a good summer pils. Long-lasting bitterness, really. More than I ever had in a Japanese major. Kinda like a Jever (but fresher than you can get a German pils here).

Can. Dull amber. Aroma is kind of plasticy. Has a similar taste, thick and gluey. One of the crappier 100% beers in Japan Iíve come across, actually. Really just a wanna-be malt liquor.

Sapporo Yebisu JoŽl Robuchon Hanayagi no Jikan (2016)
Can. Pours a hazy pale gold, low creamy foam. Bright noble hop aroma, some lemon, and white wine grape (now see it has Nelson Sauvin). Taste is bready malt, gentle citrus and hop. Light and crisp feel, a little light on for flavour, but decent.

Can. A- Sweet grains, slight citrus, straw. A- Gold color, clear liquid, white head. T- Sweet grains, cereal, subtle citrus. P- Light body, average texture, average carbonation, boring finish. O- Not sure how this is extra. No extra abv, no extra flavor. Maybe extra boring? Typical pale lager.

Can. A- Coriander, cloves, subtle citrus, strong spice, wheat. A- Golden color, hazy liquid, white head. T- Strong spice, coriander, clove, black pepper, subtle lemon, orange peel. P- Light body, average texture, average carbonation, unbalanced finish. O- Could have been worse but the spice was way too strong. Almost blocked out any citrus and made it too much to handle.

Can. A- Subtle herbal spice, grassy, slightly hoppy, grains. A- Golden color, hazy liquid, off white head. T- Slightly bitter, sweet grains, herbs, black pepper spice. P- Light body, average texture, average carbonation, smooth finish. O- Just enough spice and bitterness to make it stand a bit above everything else for a typical refresher. Nothing I would run out to buy but for the big Japanese beer names, this one I could actually drink.

Sapporo Mugi to Hoppu Platinum Clear
Can. Thin fruit/vegetable aroma, small citrus, but mostly light stinky sewer. Medium pale straw color. Verk mild malt initial, gentle and sort of sweet through mid palate, with very low hop presence. Thin, watery body. Innocuous, mild stuff. This series has definitely less spirits presence than the average daisan or happoshu.

Can. Clear gold body, low head. Gentle malt aroma, some biscuit. Plain taste, barley and grassy, light citrus. The smooth body is apparent but not exactly suitable for a lager. Hops are subdued, needs to finish drier.

Can. Bright clear pale gold, decent head. Grassy gentle Saaz aroma, some light fruit perhaps, a touch of cardboard. Tastes very plain and harmless, faint suggestion of citrus. The feel is a bit aspiriny with the carbonation. Very light body. Not bad, but Yebisu has better options.

Sapporo Mugi to Hoppu Kuro
Sapporo Mugi to Hoppu Kuro is not easy to find here on this list. Thatís because most of us non-Nihongo speakers will only be able to read "Sapporo Rich Black". Anyway, this was a bit of a surprise. I was expecting a repellent Schwarzbier, but I got a malty, rather berry-bitter and sweet concoction that reminded me of some of the better local stouts. Not bad on the palate, a bit creamy, and better than anything you can get from a can at a convenience store.

Coming in a very distinctive shiny silver can, it certainly stands out in the off licence. Appearance: The appearance was of a lovely clean looking golden yellow colour, with a pretty good white frothy head on pour Head does die a little, no real lacing Nice carbonation, bubbling along throughout. Is definitely a nice looking beer, even if the head is non existent. Aroma: Not trying to be funny but thought it smelt of shite, ha ha, now I know thatís obviously the sweet rice mixed around with the hops, grains and sweet malts. but Jesus I didnít like the smell one bit at all, very stinky smell, bit of a generic beer smell too, Japanese style, but not very appealing. Faint initial taste of the malts , not much to saviour, but very clean and smooth, very easy to drink Taste only really kicks in at the back end, with the rice and the grassy hops kicking in Has a slight kick to it alright, can definitely feel the alcohol, sweet and bitter, but not overbearing. Ok beer, not a bad beer, nothing offensive, not much taste, but very smooth and easy to drink, but it would be nice to actually taste some real flavours.......something......anything at all....come on! And not just a bland generic taste of nothingness

Can. MIld sewery nose, a bit of prickly hoppiness, and a light grassy note. Pretty deep gold straw color, thin head, some good lacing. Sweetish malty initial, fruity fruity with hopping, grassy in mid palate, and a rich malty finish. Thin-medium body, well balanced. The label touts the new Saaz hops, but I donít really get them so much in the nose.

Can. Somewhat stinky nose - a bit vegetal, actually, bit of spice, but kind of happoshu-like. Medium copper/ gold color, thin head. Thick malty initial flavor, hits of spicy hopping, then the malt reasserts itself, and finishes with solid bitter tracks. Medium body. I donít really care for the nose on this one. But it has an intriguing malt/hop interaction in the flavor.

Mdium miscuity malt sweetness. Properly done. Very well hopped, much better than the newly sweetened regular version. Dig it for a refresher.

Sapporo Craft Label Hello! Weizen
Can from World Beer Market (Sake no Taniguchi). Light banana nose, with a small chemical spice-like note. Medium gold straw color, and not much head (for a weizen). Sweetish banana initial flavor, gets a bit harsh in mid palate with some ususual bittering. Harshness continues through to the finish. Thin-medium body. Seems very thin, and that mid and final rough character doesnít help things much. They really didnít get this one right. Goodbye! Weizen.

Sapporo Classic Haru no Kaori
Can from Hokkaido. Nicely hoppy nose--says it uses special "flavor hops" to make "the aroma of Springtime rise." Is quite nice actually. Lemon, orange, light malt, some biscuit. Clear, deep gold with a low thick head. Nice citrus flavor, pineapple too. Malts are there although not particularly tasty. Oily, slightly fizzy palate. Not bad at all. A bit too sweet. Peppery, prickly hop finish with long bitterness. I could drink more.

Sapporo Kaori no Goku Zero
Can. More alcohol, and the word "Hop" on the front label. Can it be even close to as terrible as the 4% wonderbier? Citrus, bubble gum nose, pineapple and tropical fruits. I cannot say it smells like hops, but it smells better than the regular, which smells like nothing. Flavor is gross pineapple syrup, nasty ass astringent finish, apple and orange juice. This is also simply disgusting, although half as gross as the other. When I drink something like this, I feel a newfound respect for the Reinheitsgebot. This has 13 ingredients!

Can. Straight from the fridge. Deep gold, clear, oily, lace. Not much of a nose at all. A bit of white grape, touch of orange juice, some cardboard. Unoffensive, un-anything. Flavor is much, much worse. Oh shit, this is horrible. Citrus dish detergent, rubbing alcohol, wet paper, alka seltzer. Not even vaguely beer like or minimally drinkable. Harsh bitter finish. Worst thing this year. Mind-blowingly horrible.

Can, shared by me... in the library... just now.
Pours a pale golden color, perfectly clear with lots of little bubbles rising from the bottom of the glass, itís got a very well retained and attractive fluffy white head.

The aroma is a little tinny and mostly sweet & doughy with a little bit of herbal character to it.

The flavor is fine, I mean it tastes like a above average industrial lager. Itís got a nice bit of herbal bitterness and a pretty defined rice flavor, itís a touch sweet... but not horribly so, itís also got a mild fruitiness to it. Honestly the hop character here really carries this beer, itís pleasant and bitter and just mutes some of the less desirable flavors a touch.

grass, cooked vegetables, cinnamon, golden, clear, frothy, white foam, light sweetness, sticky, medium body. Smells of cheap happoshu, a bit more refined sweetness. Grainy and stickily sweet, too heavy for the limited flavor profile. Makes my throat hurt a bit? I guess young drinkers may go for this sort of thing... like a grown-up happoshu. I would rather not drink than sit down with a few of these.
