Clear yellow-gold pour with a thin ring of a head. Aroma is nice and clean, slightly sweet, juicy cider, just a hint of earthy oak. Flavor is about the same with a little more oak. Nothing crazy going on here, but its a solid, pretty clean cider.

Bottle shared by MrPickles...thanks Andy! - Pours pale clear yellow with very little head. Nose is light and dry, with a bit of apple cider vinegar. Taste is dry and light, with a little overripe apple, light sweetness, gentle carbonation, and a bit of tartness. Light and soft in the mouth with gentle carbonation. Not bad.

This is the good stuff. I went to school near their brewery center and biked down there many a time to pick up hard cider, as well as their unpasteurized unfermented fresh squeezed cider. Apple and yeast aromas in the Hard Cider. Not particularly sweet. Perfect refreshing mouthfeel with a bit of apple tannin that lingers and a good amount of carbonation.

Bottle @ home via the artist formerly known as pepsiedcan. Iowa wael tick. Thanks Andy! Pours a bit hazy yellow appearance with a spritzy white head that has no retention. Sweet red delicious, champagne bubbly, light white wine, pear aroma. Refreshing, spritzy, sweet apple juice flavor. Definitely chuggable. Easy to pound and honestly just begs to drank as fast and as immaturely as possible.

Another fine Iowa tick provided by Andy. Clear pale yellow color with a thin layer of white foam. Certainly has some apple aroma, lots of yeast, some alcohol, and a hint of spice. Light tartness, some fruit skins, and somewhat dry. The flavor is just okay. Apple fruitiness, some drying fruit skin, a little yeast, and very mild tartness.

Bottle from John’s Grocery. Sam PP glass. Clear, vibrant, pale wheat color. Smells of pears, cider vinegar, & yeast. Has a little bit of that strange Babycham thing going on. Really, really crispy. Loads of vanilla. Subtle pear & hay. Tart eating apples & plastic in the back. Low acid. Noticeable sulfites. Refreshing stuff that I would gladly pick up a sixer of.

On tap at Red’s Ale House in North Liberty, IA. Pours a crystal clear, straw colored body with a thin, fizzy, white head that dissipates quickly and leaves a light lacing. Aroma is medium sweet apples with a lightly tart and acidic note. Flavor is similar. Medium sweet apples up front with a light acidic tarntess before this finishes crisp, mostly dry, and balanced before leaving a medium length aftertaste. Light body and a moderately fizzy carbonation. Overall, nothing spectacular, but a solid cider. Somewhat sweet and lightly tart with a refreshing, crisp acidic finish.

750ml from pepsiedcan. Pours a clear champagne color with a short lived head. Aromas of apples with some Belgian yeast type smells. Taste is sweet apples, slight tartness with an apple juice finish. No alcohol detected. This is my first cider, and I’m not really all that impressed... I guess I would prefer something much drier and more tart (if that’s possible) in a cider. I don’t know, maybe it’s just not my style.

750 ml courtesy of pepsiedcan. Pours a brilliant clear gold with lots of carbonation bubbles rising to the surface. Pleasant aroma of apples but not a strong fragrance. The flavor is apples and is very subdued and is short lived not lingering very long on the palate. Dries out at the finish and the flavor just sort of evaporates.

750mL thanks to pepsiedcan. Pours mega sparkling clear golden with sharp, white fizz. Nose is small pears, vanilla, really quite muted. Taste is red apple skin heavy, bitter, slightly dry and powdery with quite the refreshing, citric, quenching character. Drier, phlegmy palate. Not too bad. Not really fruity and very white grape forward. More like champagne.

I drank about 6 pints of this today while working jazzfest. Awesome. Super light gold pour with tons of bubbles but little head, reminds me of soda. Bile and sulfur up front in the aroma and flavor, some apple rounds it out. Dry and mildly tart finish, very refreshing. This is a damn good cider.

Bottle, 6%. Weak apple aroma, hint of wax. Clear very pale yellow colour. The flavour has a spicy apple note, a little wax and some flowery spiciness. The wax might actually be vanilla. Tastes OK, but is not so flavourful.

Sutliff River Bend Trading Company Hard Cider
Sampled at the Sutliff Cider Company’s tasting room, south of Lisbon, Iowa. Pours a clear sauvignon blanc colored cider with a thin fizzy white film top that quickly dissipates to a sparkling clear top. Aroma of light apple some subdues vanilla and a hint of honey. Taste is not as sparkling as Sutliff’s hard cider but more sweet apple flavor. Finish is more apple juice than hard cider, light, crisp, and a hint of sweetness with no yeast and acidic aftertaste. Overall a little softer than the regular Sutliff’s hard cider but still has some carbonation.

Sampled at the Sutliff Cider Company’s tasting room, south of Lisbon, Iowa. Pours a clear pinot grigio colored cider with a decent fizzy white top that slowly dissipates to a sparkling clear top. Aroma of light apple and hint of Prosecco and a hint of vanilla. Taste is sparkling, light bodied, crisp with flavors of Cortland and Jonathan (slight acidic) and a hint of Côte des Blancs yeast which has some Gewurztraminer character. Finish is quite balanced, crisp, some light dry palate and no yeast and acidic aftertaste. Overall a very solid sparkling hard cider, no heavy carbonation, just a crisp apple aftertaste.

This is the champagne of ciders. So much so, we served this at our wedding. I have tasted dozens of ciders and was really impressed by the crispness and semi-dry qualities. You must try this cider as it is hands down, the best.

A huge suprise! Crisp and refreshing Sutliff walks the tightrope between wine and beer. Made on an Iowa farm, tasting room is an 1890 barn. 100% apple juice allowed to slowly ferment and then stored in oak barrels fora nice crisp finish. Tasted at a festival and was so impressed i had to stop bt and check the place out.

I really enjoyed this cider. It has a nice apple nose on it. This cider has a light yellow appearance, almost clear. The flavor was enjoyable. The first impression is sweet, then a nice dry flavor as if drinking a brute. When holding in my mouth I did pick up on an alcohol taste. The acidy to this drink made my tongue talk and feel alive. The palate is acidy but light. This is a great cider if you are looking for something that is not a typical American cider.

Sutliff Hard Cider
Courtesy TheCheeseMan. Pours a clear, light golden color with no head. Paper-thin sheeting coats the glass momentarily, but is quick to retreat. The aroma is as simple as they come, but well done. Fresh red and green apples are featured, with just a touch of cider vinegar and a hint of vanilla. Flavors follow suit, fresh, crisp apples show lightly sweet and tart characteristics. Light on palate and carbonation, the crispness of the apples along with the semi-dry finish makes for a refreshing drink. This is not outstanding, by any means, but it highly drinkable and would make for a nice spring time alternative.

Perhaps the only cider I will rate, as it has a dear place in my heart. This stuff is really well done, has a dry nose with lots of apples a little yeast, a bit like champagne. Taste follows very similar in flavor and texture to a good sparkling white wine. So far as I can tell this is not artificially flavored or sweetened. Dry and crisp, one of the better ciders I have ever had.

750 ml bottle from John’s Grocery. Completing my haul of potables from my home state. This is a pretty nice, basic sparkling cider. Pours the color of apple juice, with thin lines of bubbles from the bottom of the glass. Smell is of fresh, sliced apples, though none of the tart varieties in evidence. Taste has some sweetness up front, and dryness in the back of my tongue. Champagne-like effervescence indeed. Might have been nice to play up more tart varieties; I get the feeling this is derived from Red Delicious. Still, I’ve enjoyed the funky, cheesy, French ciders, but a well-made straight apple cider can be a joy, too.
