3.2 Jolly Pumpkin / Stillwater Lo-Fi Mai Tai 04/24/20 Bottle from Wolf Brew in NC around the start of the new year. Short goblets at home. Quick-hitting, thin, dirty white head. Dirty, translucent, bubbly, dark red/brown body. Smells like a macerated sour brown ale. Nothing much identifying the extra ingredients. Taste is a sour brown with lots of lime zest & a twinge of pineapple juice. Vinegary & Jolly Pumpkin appropriately sour. First hit is well carbonated, turning to just a slight but constant fizz. Yeasty, but runny texture, alcohol is fine. Wanted more mai tai. A little messy as a basic sour. Expensive. Tuesday, March 5, 2024

3.5 Jolly Pumpkin Miles to Go DTW airport draught, 11/18/23. Undetermined clarity black with mahogany highlights. Faint beige bubbles on edge. Mostly souring acids in the nose, at least initially, while it's still ice cold. Sour, as is usual for this brewery, with the telltale heavy lactic, moderate acetic, low Brett character. Some chocolate and burnt cocoa on the finish. Maybe the juniper is intertwined with the lactic notes, hard to say. Medium to medium-light body, highly attenuated. Clean, not all that stout-like. Not tons of chocolate or juniper. Mostly a dark sour, which is fine. Doesn't really gain much body with warming. A bit thin and over-attenuated. Saturday, November 18, 2023

3.8 Jolly Pumpkin Aquamarine Dream 16 ounce can Revisiting Jolly Pumpkin after a long time away I am pleased they are still as solid as ever. While the prices might have increased over the years the quality hasn't slipped. If you have access to their products this one is definitely worth picking up fresh as a distinctive take on the usual saison. AROMA / APPEARANCE Tart strawberry lemonade and cherries fill the air with fruit salad. A cheery red base glows with life as well as carbonation. FLAVOR / PALATE Fresh fruit salad refreshes the palate like waves of cherry lemonade. The maltiness stands out from most saisons in a way that fits in with the brewery's more traditional lineup. A pleasant finish of lime and sea salt ties it all together. Consider this one a transition from old school to new. Tuesday, August 22, 2023

3.6 Jolly Pumpkin Maracaibo Especial Stemless glassware @Sideways in Dallas. $5 clearance pours! Very deep mahogany brown, almost still pour. Mainly a lemon & black tea, slightly herbal nose. Sour fruit, saison feels. Cherry, apricot, coffee fruit, black tea & accompanying astringency, lemon tart, bittersweet apple, cola sweetness. Moderate oxidation through all of this. Special kegs tend to sleep around here till they're a second too old. Super easy, dead low carb, bit of yeasty body, hot feels. Great. Even better if it wasn't old. Wednesday, August 16, 2023

3.4 Jolly Pumpkin Bière de Mars Deep dark copper, amber and beautiful bronzed coloured body with a thinnish, single centimetre tall off-white head that fades very quickly and leaves nothing up top. Aroma of soured, tart and funky bretty notes with some additional raspberries and cherries in the mix with a light touch of yeast and oak towards the end of the nose. Light to Medium-bodied; Strong funky and very bretty flavours dominate with a lot of tart crispness and a touch of grainy, light maltiness here with some yeast, oak and white wine grapes noticeable as well, all ending quite easily with some raspberries and cherries towards the finish. Aftertaste is pretty funky from the brett and yeast here, as you'd expect with a light dose of flowers and dryness at the end that goes well with the tart and fruity notes, which are strong here. Overall, nice to try of course, but not one of their better beers of course, but at least should appeal to the masses. I sampled this fourteen ounce pour on draught at Jolly Pumpkin in Detroit (DTW Airport) on 21-April-2023 for US$12,00 sampled while leaving this fine city. Tuesday, August 1, 2023

3.3 Jolly Pumpkin Aquamarine Dream 7.3% ABV. Aromas are a mix of fruited vinegar and caramel malt. Once it warms up a couple of degrees flavors are somewhat similar to nose, mellowing out a bit, moderate tart with a little sweet in the back. Add in a bit of funk. Not bad but nothing special either. Thursday, July 20, 2023

4.1 Jolly Pumpkin / Anchorage No Ka Oi Beer #20 of my 10,00th Beer Milestone Celebration! Mostly clear golden and lightly orange tinted body with a nice, but very fast-dying frothy white head that leaves a subtle lace on the side that isn't good looking nor ugly. Aroma of funky, soured, tart and spontaneously fermented, oaked fruit notes with raspberries, strawberries, bretty and cedar notes with a lot of yeast here of course and a bunch of dry, cleanser notes as well - very nice on the nose. Light to barely Medium-bodied; Tart and funky, bretty and especially woodsie foeder notes dominate with a lot of funk, a good deal of crisp dryness that is supported from the relatively light malts, but the sugars are at a great level, quite low, but definitely noticeable and showing a big fruity quality. Aftertaste shows some dryness of course with a lot of funk, a good deal of wood, cedar and bretty notes, but the floral, perfumey quality, perhaps from the hops, but definitely from the yeasts here is nice throughout and quite complex, as expected. Overall, a great beer, sort of as expected, as I love both of these two breweries, and you pretty much know what to expect when you open a JP beer, but this shows the great floral and especially fruity aspects of the usually wild and funky components of the yeast and barrels here. Great to sample, especially as very new purchase to me (but already 7 years old!) from Florida by way of Alaska through Michigan, perhaps one of the best trajectories of a beer, and ultimately sampled at home here in Washington, but great to have and well worth trying to find or perhaps hold on even longer if you already have a bottle of this one, but a funky, complex, easy-drinking beer that will probably excite most beer drinkers in some way, aside from those BMC folks. I sampled this 75 cL bottle as Beer #20 [of 21 - 10 (for 10,000) of Each side of the 10,000 Beer Milestone and the 10,000th itself!] of my 10,000th Beer Milestone, purchased from Knightly Spirits in Orlando (Orange Blossom Trail), Florida on 31-December-2022 for US$14,99 (but as part of a 'buy two, get THREE free' deal), bottled in 2016 (the rest of the date has worn off on the label) as 'Blend 02A' and sampled at my house here in Washington on 19-June-2023. 3.7 Jolly Pumpkin Bam Bière A nice beer from a respected brewery. In a desperate attempt to find something similar to biere de mars I came across this stuff, and it is pretty good. Hazy yellow pour. Somewhat sour on the nose, and pretty sour on the pallate. I think most people would mistake this for a sour. My friend, who is mainly an IPA drinker almost choked on it. Had no idea that it was going to be that sour. I myself found it to be very pleasant and balanced. Definitely more sour than I anticipated with funky citrus notes. A great beer overall. 3.2 Jolly Pumpkin Pincha-Discos Beer #2 of my 10,00th Beer Milestone Celebration! Very (mostly clear) golden coloured body with a pretty thin, very fast-dying pure white head that barely leaves anything up top after a few seconds and shows no real signs of movement. Aroma of very funky, soured, bretty, lactobilly and incredibly oaky scents with some raspberries and pure foeder notes with the complex yeast showing front and centre along with some light malts and a dash of fruits - nice in the nose, and almost exactly what you'd expect from Jolly Pumpkin. Light to Medium-bodied; Very strong funky and especially tart wild yeast flavours dominate here with some bretty funk and a lot of dry oaky, foeder notes with some flowers like hibiscus and chamomile noticeable, but the tart blueberry and raspberry notes show towards the end with a big dryness and no real sweet flavours. Aftertaste is enjoyable, if slightly simplistic with almost all of the flavours and complexity originating from the yeast and complexity from the foeder and funk here with no real sweetness, no malts and definitely no hops here. Overall, a pretty nice, relatively straight-forward and super funky, yeast-complex beer with some light malts, but no sugars, hops or other complex notes to drive this into a better experience. Still nice to sample as part of my 10,000th beer celebration as it's from the amazing (my home) state of Michigan, but there are better JP beers than this of course and perhaps the additional time (in the bottle) has made it TOO mellow. I sampled this 75 cL bottle as Beer #2 [of 21 - 10 (for 10,000) of Each side of the 10,000 Beer Milestone and the 10,000th itself!] of my 10,000th Beer Milestone, purchased from Habersham Beverage Warehouse in Savannah, Georgia on 04-May-2018 for US$13,99, as Blend 001, bottled on 10-August-2015 and sampled at my house here in Washington on 26-April-2023. 3.5 Jolly Pumpkin Slow Down 16oz can. Bright and biting for the style. Blackberry is faded, chocolate is not really there at all, maybe some distant cacao? Pleasant body, a little better than average in that respect. Drinkable, is what it is. Friday, April 21, 2023

3.8 Jolly Pumpkin / Holy Mountain Smashed Grabbed & Hop Dusted Bottle @ Home. Cloudy golden beer with a white head. The aroma is really nice. Big on tropical fruit like pineapple and passion fruit. Lots of grass, lemongrass, and lime. There's a fairly prominent white pepper note to it, particularly on the flavor. A slight, but noticeable, astringency to the finish. Overall, it's a nice beer and has a lot of things I like about both of these breweries, just not quite what you'd hope for. Saturday, April 15, 2023
