Upland Schwarz
Nearly black in color. Taller khaki colored head. Dark caramel and lightly roasted malt aromas. Light and fairly crisp in feel. Touch of sweetness in the front and into the middle. Dries out with a bit of tar and ash on the back of the tongue. Dark malt congregate in the finish. A nice Schwartz, that would be a great weekend late afternoon near the end of a project type brew. 4/10

Upland Crimson
Malefactor bottle. Aroma is vinegar, cherries, oak, and light bourbon. Tastes moderately sour with loads of fruit and moderate vinegar. Tart and acidic finish. So crushable though which is amazing for a 10.5% acidic sour. The bourbon is subtle but adds so much to this. Love this beer.

Draft to mini-snifter at The Wood Shop Grand Opening. Looks solid; a cloudy darker brown with lighter beige lacing. Smells of chocolate, raspberry, and oak alongside a hint of roast. Tastes like it smells with a medium full-bodied mouthfeel that’s slightly tart from the raspberries. Enjoyable.

Faint aroma of coffee...some grain and bread also. Pale golden color...almost non existent head...white. Sweet grains up front, then an echo of roasted coffee. Odd combination as its pilsner like with coffee. Finish is bitter coffee. Watery mouth feel. Meh.

12oz bottle. Deep brown-red body. Thin, oily non-head. Quite a nice Quad, though a different, stiller mouthfeel than a Belgian example. Massive malt tones, massive oak tones. Big dark red fruit tones. Deep malt tones, but never overbearing, drinkable. Really well done.

Upland Hopsynth
Draft to mini-snifter at the Wood Shop Grand Opening. Looks good; a hazy lighter lemon with white head. Smells of grassy hops, oak, and a bit of funk with a soft semi-sweet presence in the background. Tastes like it smells, but grassier. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied and has very little acidity. Solid, but not really sour, and smells better than it tastes.

Pour is a pale clear gold with a small fizzy white head. Aroma is corn and pale malt. Flavor is clean lager malt and watery. A little more body of malt than the lagers of today. It would be good at a picnic on a warm summer day.

Draft to pint at Upland in Carmel. Looks good for the style; a transparent golden orange with foamy eggshell head that slowly but steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells mildly semi-sweet a nicely balanced coffee presence that seems cold-brewed because it lacks roast. Some mild ale yeast on the tongue as well. Tastes like it smells with a medium-bodied mouthfeel that’s silky overall, but finishes with a touch of bitterness. Enjoyable, and reminds me of Odd Side Bean Flicker.

Upland Orchid
750 ml. bottle sampled @ Hopishop #3. I wasn’t the biggest fan of Viola, I am not the biggest fan of this one, they are quite comparable, base beer is the same I assume, only the flower changed. I have never eaten an Orchid so I have no idea how they taste, apparently they are edible (enjoyable even going by the internet but who trusts the internet these day?). Pours red dark brown, small tanned here. Nose is massive vinegar, dark brown rye bread, very fizzy with Coca-Cola. Taste & body are overly fizzy, Coca-Cola, balsamic vinegar, big fizzy & vinegar infused Coca-Cola, fizzy rye bread, over carbonated, caramel. Over-carbonated, at best a mess. I think that I like this one a bit less than Viola but I didn’t care for either one of them. not a good attempt an Oud Bruin, flower theme might be fun enough for another brewery to explore. Hopefully with a better base beer.

I like blond ales and this smells like a good blond ale, very mild hops and a bit of grainy malt. I can dig it. The coffee element actually works pretty well too. It’s fairly smooth, rich but not overbearing and the bitterness it adds serves as a hop compliment. Though it sounds good on paper, something about this doesn’t work for me. The mild nose and stronger flavor are sort of incongruous. It’s not so much that it’s off-putting but really in the more interesting than good category.

12 oz. bottle from Liquor Barn (Jefferson Commons); shared with my Boo. Aroma: Cereals with a lighter, non-distinct coffee notes in the background. Appearance: Translucent blonde pour with average carbonation holding up a foamy white cap that quickly settles into a bubbly ring. Flavor: Coffee more prevalent than in the nose, but again, the coffee here does not draw me in... blonde ale characteristics are much more subdued; the finish is quite dry and abrupt. Palate: Medium body, sticky texture, average carbonation, abrupt finish. Overall: This just seemed a little directionless to me; a missed opportunity.
