on tap in the ramshackle barnikel front room. clear pale golden with a minimal head but plenty of lacing. sweet aroma of sugar water and hay; quite crisp and fresh, in contrast to the surroundings; light bitterness, crisp grain. drinkable but not in the same league as some of the neighbouring breweries

Barnikel Bock 3.1
Clear amber gold, lightly effervescent with a white head. Malty aroma of candy sugar, pale malt honey pastries, hops are faint peach, faint off-notes of detergent, plastic and cauliflower (DMS), which sounds bad but again, it’s a mild off-aroma. Rich and full bodied, honey-ish with lip smacking crispness. Honey malt / sugar syrup, light ethanol in the finish.

Barnikel Lager Hell 3
Draft at Brauerei Barnikel. Clear gold with a bubbled white head. Clean, malty pilsner with medium bitterness, lightly spicy / peppery, low citrus / lemon quality, more similar to low-hopped Pilsner or Helles. Faint papery off-notes of grain husks and potato starch. Fine carbonation and zesty lemon noble hop bitterness. Carbonic acidity is quenching and saliva-inducing. Lightly sweet with medium bitterness. Very clean. Short finish turns papery.

Barnikel Bock 3.5
bottle, mit Dank an MoritzF! Clear golden colour, mid-sized white head. Lovely rural aroma, bitter-sweet with a touch of barnyard and again, more aromatic hops in the lingering finish. Anytime again!

Barnikel Weizen 3.3
(swing top bottle, purchased at the brewery a couple of days ago) Hazy, golden colour with a blond medium-sized foamy head. Wheat-malty and yeasty aroma with phenolic clovy spices and a moderately fruity touch of bananas. Moderately sweet flavour, light to medium bodied with a lively carbonation. Present wheaty base with a milky touch, banana and a whiff of barnyard and cloves; sweet and minimally sourish wheat-malty finish with notes of banana and hints of vanilla in the aftertaste. Obviously the days of bad-bottling are gone. 27.X.11

Koelschtrinker
Barnikel Dunkel 1.9

Barnikel Weizen 3.1
It’s unclear golden with a creamy, white head. The aroma has perfumed notes of fruit, banana and berries. The flavour is sweet with notes of banana, yeast, wheat and banana peal, and the finish is dry. It’s very mild, but still OK.

Maria
Barnikel Rauchbier Rauchzart 3.1
Bottle at home. It’s dark amber with a small head, and both aroma and the sweet flavour has notes of smoke and smoked meat. The smoke is very clean, but as it does not offer anything else, it tends to become a bit boring in the long run.

Barnikel Lager Hell 2.5
Bottle at home. It’s golden with a light grey hue and a small head. The aroma has notes of butter and malt, and the mouth-feel is flat. The flavour has a light sweetness and notes of way too much butter, malt and a little flowers, and the finish is dry. The best before date is not marked or stamped, so maybe it’s too old?

Barnikel Dunkel 2.7
(swing top bottle, purchased at the brewery) Hazy, ruby brown colour with a short and tanned foamy layer. Slightly sweet and toasted malty aroma with berry-fruity notes and a tinge of barnyard, diacetyl. Moderately sweet flavour, medium to light bodied with a flat carbonation. Mildly toasted malty taste with a whiff of caramel and fruity notes; slightly sweet and roasty bitter finish with subtle fruity notes. Not really convincing. It seems the brewery has problems with their bottling. 14.XI.10

Barnikel Lager Hell 2.6
(draught at the brewpub and swing top bottle at home) Hazy, golden colour with a blond and short foamy head. Slightly bready and yeasty malty aroma with a shy hoppy touch. Moderately sweet flavour, light to medium bodied with a moderate carbonation. Pale malt-character with bready and grainy spots; moderately dry and bitter sweet finish. Not a highlight in Franconia. The bottled version was almost without carbonation/head and pretty flat. 07. & 14.XI.10

Botle at Hagges Bärsklubb German beer festival (2005?). Thin fluffy head over an amber beer, almost as if you had a real ale. Smoky aroma that is realy plesant. Small body with a small bitterness.

Barnikel Dunkel 1.3
Looks dead. Chestnut colour. Communistic aroma of rustic nasty. Communist taste - burnt liquorice, butter and the like. Very light body. Charred things, thin, nothing works. One of the few Franconian beers I genuinely could not stand.

Barnikel Lager Hell 1.9
Slight hazy tan. Rather full of diacetyl on the nose. Very buttery. Still has ok mouthfeel, though. Light bitterness and a fairly dry finish, though there is harsh butter throughout. Truly old-school beer for a truly old-school pub.

Bügelverschlußflasche at the brewpub: Deep golden, small off-white head, quickly collapsing; solid chalky, grainy and a bit barnyardy nose; moderate bitter-sweet flavour, quite light bodied for a beer of 5.8%; chalky-malty finish with a light bitterness in the aftertaste. O.K. ............

Barnikel Rauchbier Rauchzart 2.5
From bottle. Pours dark brown to black with a fully diminished white head. Dense smoked to rubberish aroma. Too much. Light malty with a distinct eel like smoked flavour and aroma is too dominant for me. Smoked and dry finish with a distinct bonfire smoked note.

5.4%. Good wood fire aroma. Cloudy light brown colour. Small head. The flavour has a lot of wood fire, old charcoal. Quite nice, but gets a little citric in the finish and after a while even sour.

Barnikel Rauchbier Rauchzart 2.4
Coppery colored, cloudy appearance. Little yellow head. Nice smoked aroma with sweet hops and some biting lemon. Medium bodied. Flavor is disappointment: watery palate with some biting lemon, smoke vanishes almost totally after nice aroma. Aftertaste turns to bitingly sour with some lemon. Surprise how much flavor differs from aroma.

Hand bottled bottle opened with a very faint fsst, drunk at the gaststätte. A hazy brown beer with no head. The aroma is sweet matly with a slight acidic note as well as light notes of berries. The flavor is sweet malty with light notes of caramel. Nothing wrong, just rather boring.

Barnikel Rauchbier Rauchzart 2
Butterscotch is quite notable but blends well with smoke, wood and sulfur in the chalky, lightly metallic aroma. Opaque brown body is topped by a low tan head that lasts and laces. Sour. Dusty, chalky, metallic. Not good words to be starting with. Butterscotch. Uh-oh. Caramel, smoke, berries... mere afterthoughts. Very dry and light with sharp, pointy carbonation. Astringent. Bottle sampled with MartinT, muzzlehatch and Olivier_MTL.

Papsoe
Barnikel Rauchbier Rauchzart 2.7
(Bottle 50 cl) Pours a clear, orangey brown with an off-white head. Extreme - almost tar like - smoke aroma. Medium body a bit on the watery side. Weak caramel notes completely overpowered by the fat, baconish smoke flavours. Underlying tartness - Barnikel clearly has an infection problem with their bottled beers. 091106

Barnikel Weizen 2
(Bottle 50 cl) Pours a cloudy, pale golden with a small, white head. Lightly tart citrus nose. Medium body, some phenol and citrus and a distinct underlying tartness suggesting that this is another infected Barnikel beer. 091106

(Bottle 50 cl) Pours a clear, orangey brown with a small, dissipating head. Quite flat - something is wrong with the carbonation here. Some roasted malt in the nose. Medium-bodied with lightly sweet, roasted malt. Almost no bitterness. A very plain Dunkel. 091106
