Free State Comet IPA 3.9
4 oz mini goblet draft at Bier Station in Kansas City, Missouri. The pour is a clear golden with a foamy off white head that leaves behind great lace. The aroma is pungent resin, dank earth along with cracker malt. Fresh and bright The taste is the clean, fresh resin hop notes, with the crisp cracker malt and the super fresh dry finish. The palate is medium bodied with soft carbonation and a natural mineral resin finish. Nice, clean and tasty.

Free State Ad Astra Ale 3.2
Weird mineral, slightly astringent aroma with some Sugar Daddy caramel lurking within; amber color, pale beige crown; toffee and caramel, brown sugar, fruity/berry quality in the middle, dried dates and other fruits; earthy bitterness in the finish, balanced overall; light medium body, ample carbonation; tastes far better than it smells, solid amber ale.

Free State Oatmeal Stout 3
APPEARANCE- pours nice an black, looks fairly tin, the head is thin with fine-ish bubbles but laces really nicely. NOSE- slightest hint of roastiness. FLAVOR- clean with light body. Slight bit of roasty malts in the flavor too. Nice long deep flavors, almost char, that stays in my mouth for quite a while after the sip. The palate may be the high point for this beer.

MetalNHopHead
Free State Oatmeal Stout 4.2
Free State Oatmeal Stout: a part of this complete breakfast, at least according to my Sunday ritual. Damn me if it wasnít the best part of it. This Oatmeal Stout pours a very dark brown with a cream-colored head. Aroma of cocoa, licorice, cream, and toasted barley. Flavor had more of the same with some subtle coffee and a slightly bitter finish from the hops. Not the richest Oatmeal Stout in the world, but an exquisitely balanced one.

Free State Chili Mac 4.1
The Mole Stout phenomenon has been taking off big time in the world of craft beer. Still, a good one is damn hard to beat and not especially easy to come by. Chili Mac is one of the good ones. One of the really, really good ones. Lots of spice from Ancho, cinnamon, cocoa, and vanilla. Yet, the integrity of the roasted malt body isnít spoiled. In fact, its umami character helps to tame the sweetness of the vanilla and cinnamon and plays up the smokiness in the pepper. None of Chili Macís components seem under-used or out of place. This is one to keep an eye on.

Draft/Fest. A- Pine, bitter. A- Mahogany color, cloudy liquid, off white head. T- Oak, subtle bitterness, complex. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, complex finish. O- The oak is there but otherwise not much going on but some bitterness. Okay beer but I think the base beer is actually better.

Draft/Fest. A- Oak, stone fruits. A- Mahogany color, cloudy liquid, off white head. T- Woody, rotten fruit, pear, peach. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, bland finish. O- Iíd say this one is a bit overrated, but itís not entirely bad by any means. Just not the complexity I think it should have to make me say wow.

Free State Marz Madness 3.5

Free State Frost Flower 2.5
Pour is a clear yellow with a large white head. Aroma is a sweeter than normal malt for a pils with some sort of adjunct that I canít put my finger on. Flavor is a heavy sweet sticky malt with almost no hop presence. This is way more malt liquor than pils. None of the crackerlike malt or grassy hop you would like to find in a pils are found here. I will pass on trying this again.

BigBeer45
Free State Old Backus Barleywine 3.8
Sampled from a bottle, this ale had a hazy medium brown-rust red pour and gave almost a one finger cover of pale yellow bubbles that receded to a small ring and scattering of small islands, it left some spots of lacing on the glass, it had malty aromas with caramel, some bread, faint chocolate and raisin like fruit, faint citrus notes in the background with malt and light brown sugar sweetness, the flavors were big malt, caramel, some chocolate, a little raisin dark fruit, some light brown sugar sweetness and very faint peach fruit notes with a little imperial red notes in the background that I found to be a little odd, the finish had a small alcohol / citrus bitterness and trailed on the tongue for a bit, malty notes followed and clung to the mouth to give a back and forth of malt and bitterness with a tip to the malt and sweetness, the mouth feel was medium full, it was a little creamy and had soft to average carbonation, this beer was pretty mellow and easy to drink, a nice sipper of a drink.

Free State Faustian Bargain 3.8
Draught in Brewpub: This one poured a fairly clear golden color. There was about a finger of a frothy white head that left some lacing. It had a good nose. Yeasty, wheat, banana and clove notes. The taste was also good. Yeasty, wheat, banana, clove, spices. A good Belgian!

Free State Yakimaniac IPA 2.7
Smells like a lemon drop but has a slight pine sol quality to it that takes it down a few notches. Very light hazy color with a stark white sticky head of foam. Plain taste with only a bit of citrus and a sharp hop bite at the end. Maybe itís an old bottle, it does say best by the first week of February. Iím just not feeling this one, and this is coming from someone that usually loves Free State.
