Ommegang Game of Thrones #1 - Iron Throne Ale 3.9
Golden color with a decent white head and fruity aroma. Taste is very fruity with a hint of spice at the end. Normally a brew like this is too light for me but I must say I really liked it and think it night be the best of this series.

Ommegang Hop House 4.4
Marshmallow peeps, spearmint, grass nose. Hazy amber, thick lacy head. Cat piss, grass, pear, lillies. Medium body easy carbonation. Wow, how much do I love BPAs? Such bright and complimentary complexity. A harmonious marriage of fruit and floral notes, both from the hops and the yeast by products. This beer is an outstanding representation of the style and the latest iteration of Ommegang’s development of the BPA.

Ommegang Cooperstown Ale 3
Draft. Pours a thin, poorly retained, off white head, over a cloudy light gold (SRM 4) body......nose is toasted malts, with bread biscuit note, light pear, apple esters......taste is light citrus bitterness, harsh off notes....mouth feel, light of medium body, no alcohol. This beer is quite off tasting, with none of the esters, floral notes that have been previously noted. Perhaps storage was poorly done. BJCP 6/2/10/4/5

Ommegang Game of Thrones #2 - Take the Black Stout 3
Aroma is Belgian yeast, roasted malt, not much else. Appearance is black, poured thin, light brown. Taste is Belgian yeast, some roasted malt, nothing else. Mouthfeel is heavy, medium carbonation, lots of Belgian yeast in the aftertaste. Overall, about as good as expected from a brewery I don’t like.

Ommegang Lovely, Dark and Deep 4
12 ounce bottle into signature tulip glass, bottled on 9/17/2015. Pours fairly pitch black color with a 2 finger dense and rocky tan head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, raisin, plum, fig, anise, pepper, clove, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of roast/bready malt, fruity/spicy yeast, and light earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, raisin, plum, fig, anise, pepper, clove, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Moderate amount of roasted bitterness and peppery yeast spice on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, raisin, plum, fig, anise, pepper, clove, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of roast/bready malt, fruity/spicy yeast, and light earthy hop flavors; with a great roasted bitter/sweet and spicy yeast balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from roasted bitterness and yeast spice as well. Medium-high carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready, and lightly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 5.3%. Overall this is a damn nice Belgian style oatmeal stout. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of roast/bready malt, fruity/spicy yeast, and light earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. Even though this is labeled Oatmeal stout; the base beer style felt more like an American stout due to the high roasted character and drying finish. This was a very enjoyable offering regardless.

Ommegang Abbey Ale 3.3
Bottle poured into a Spencer chalice at about 50 degrees F. Cannot find a date on this, but I think it could be quite old. The surprise is that there is no sweetness in it at all. Has a good head, smells yeasty, looks fine, I’m getting the dark fruitiness, the complexity, maltiness and spiciness. It has a nice body and a good dry finish. Maybe I’m just expecting too much sweetness from this style, but this ale is underwhelming. Will give it another shot at some point.

Ommegang Soothsayer 3.5
750ml. Like 15 bucks or something..errr...wut? Pretty solid Belgian Dark Ale. Big fruity notes, quite complex. Big and sugary, grounded with a deep Black Malt tone, but aggressive yeast tones and alcohol. Not unlike classic Trappist Ales, but maybe a little sugary and overbearing instead of sublime.

Ommegang Rosetta 3.2
On tap at Brasserie Beck, DC. Dark brown body with thin tan head. Nose is toasty, malty, and fruits of cherries. Taste is cherries, tart, and sour. Malty notes. Not my thing. But okay.

Ommegang Upside Brown 3.7
750ml bottle 2/1/16 (Binny’s)-40° in Tulip-Opened and started gushing. Pours brown with a big tan head that dissipates quickly. Aroma of brett and funk. Taste of funk, brett, malt, and dried fruit. This medium bodied brew is well balanced and is quite nasty. Nice brew.

Ommegang Game of Thrones #5 - Three-Eyed Raven 3.5
Sampled May 2015
A steady pour produces a four finger thick, glass overflowing, brown tinged, dirty tan colored had. The beer is a burnt amber / concentrated brown color that shows a brilliantly clear, bright version of the same when held up to the light. The aroma smells quite fruit laden, with toasted, dark malt notes, and ample fermentation spice notes. Notes of plum, washed out raisins, sweet brown bread, brown toasted grain husks, dark nutty notes, lots of clove, some ginger, and even a touch of peppery spice character are all noticeable.

Effervescent and bubbly as it first hits my mouth, the beer has a medium’ish body to it that balances nicely with the ample carbonation. There is a sweetness here that seems to be really boosted by fruity esters from the yeast / fermentation rather than much actual sweetness. The finish has a brown toast character, and perhaps even a touch of roasted grain character as well. There is a touch of smokiness here that is brought out by the phenolic yeast character and the dark malt notes. The dark fruit notes suggest of prunes, perhaps a bit of fig character, definite raisins, and perhaps even a hint of dried cherry. Soft, yet contributing clove notes, peppery spiciness, a touch of plastic like phenolics, and an earthy, almost musty character help to add some dimension to this brew.

I wouldn’t really of called this remotely a Saison if I had tasted it blind; it is more like some sort of Dubbel, or Belgian Dark Strong Ale of some sort. Despite Saison being a real stretch, this is a tasty enough beer in its own right, and one I am certainly enjoying.

Ommegang Game of Thrones #2 - Take the Black Stout 3.6
The aroma is caramel, a little coffee. Pours black with a frothy tan head, mostly lasting and excellent lacing. The taste is bitter. The body is medium, the texture thin, the carbonation fizzy and the finish bitter. Not bad, just a little too fizzy.

Ommegang Hennepin 4.3
12 oz. bottle. Pours a hazy gold color with a thin white head that lasts. Aroma is similar to a Hefeweizen: a little bready, banana, clove, yeast and a touch of sourness. Medium body, taste echoes the aroma with a bunch of carbonation on the tongue. Finish is slightly tart with some of the yeast coming through. Excellent!

Ommegang Scythe and Sickle Harvest Ale 3.9
2014 vintage on tap at HopCat Ann Arbor. Pours a clear brown amber with a white head. Aromas of light bubble gum and slight toastiness. As for the flavor, the age (maybe) seems to give it a light crispness. Toasted malt and fruitiness with that light crispness, overall bubble gum with some earthy aged hops. Not sure quite why, but I find it really enjoyable with the age on it.

Ommegang Hennepin 3.4

Ommegang Abbey Ale 4.1
From the bottle...popped the cork and poured to the chalice from the brewery. Big coffee head with a mix of bubbles, fades like soap. Deep ruby brown in the glass. Light penetrates a little, and appears clear. Fun lightly fruity nose. Dark cherry sweetness on the first taste that rides a mild malty chocolate through the middle. Warm in the throat but not boozy. The beer that got me started revisited years later. Great trip rating this one.

Ommegang Rosetta 3.7

Ommegang 2015 Belgian Independence Day Dry-Hopped Tripel 3.7
Dark orange-yellow, quite cloudy, big head. Aroma is sugars and dried apricots. Quite yummy considering I’m not a big-time Belgian fan. Not very sour, nice hops bitterness, I can feel the ABV a little bit, sweet orange and apricot. Quite well carbonated. Very good.
Saturday, January 23, 2016

Ommegang Rosetta 4.2
Poured medium brown with a frothy beige head. Good lacing. Smells of sour cherries, light funk, basement must. Well balanced between sour and sweet. Low carbonation for a sour. Finish is actually pretty malty. Really dig this beer.
Saturday, January 23, 2016

Ommegang Lovely, Dark and Deep 3.4
Nothing truly distinctive in the aroma: roasted mixed nuts and coffee for sure and a little wet leaves revealing the yeast. A variety of sharp and sweet tastes but, again, nothing distinctive. Lighter body than the foamy pour and dark color would suggest. Gave it a bonus half point for a lovely bottle label.

Ommegang Game of Thrones #5 - Three-Eyed Raven 3.8
Bottle. Moderate cereal for the malt, moderate herbs for the hops, light dough and meat for the yeast, with notes date and wood in the background. Head is average size, between frothy and creamy, light beige, with fair spotty lacing, and is mostly lasting. Color murky dark brown. Flavor starts heavily acidic and sour, then finishes moderately acidic. Palate is on the lighter side of medium, watery with a fizzy carbonation. Dark aromas and flavors in this tasty Saison.
