Sekinoichi Shuzo (Iwate Kura Beer) Reviews

Iwate Kura Nagisa 3.4
Iwate Kura Nagisa 5% It pours a nice amber-copper with a beige head of foam. A fruity floral almost soapy sweet aroma with some biscuity caramel notes. Medium bodied with some chewy malt character. The taste has a bit of a bready biscuit bite with fruity accents. Pretty nice. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Iwate Kura Arigatou Pale Ale 3.5
As Shunensai Original Ale - February 2016, bottle from Yamaoka. 4% Shunensai Original Ale 2016 4% Pouring an orange gold with a dense head of light beige foam it HS an enticing hop bouquet which features orange/lemon zest. Medium bodied it delivers an earthy pine bark bitterness, yeast notes of pepper/spice as well as hints of honeyed biscuit from the malts.  Easy to drink but not pushing boundaries it is a satisfying ale.

Iwate Kura Koharu White 3
Tap at Watering Hole. Hazy, light straw color with a finger of white foam. Very faint lemon, citrus notes with a touch of wheat. Very dry on the palate. Thin-bodied. Not horrible, but watery. Finish has very little flavor....just wheat water.

Iwate Kura Japanese Herb Ale Sansho 3.3
Poured golden, maybe a bit hazy. Aroma was quite strong sansho, herbal and spicy, a bit of citrus. Taste is quite similar, mainly herbal and spices are dominating. Body itself is in the background and not really that interesting. I had a baked bread with pesto paste with that beer and that paired wonderfully, herbal characters from the beer and from the snack blended really nicely and taste was elevated a lot. Otherwise more like a curiosity, could drink one pint but maybe not that motivated to have several.

Tohoku Damashii Bakusui Lager 3.4
Pours amber, kind of hazy. Does not come with much of foam, just a bit, some lacings there as well. Aroma is mainly sweet, fruity and some custard cake with yuzu and pears. Taste is quite similarly sweet, custard, yuzu, pears and persimmons, bitterness there in the background, not really for balancing the beer - but making it definitely one notch better and more drinkable. Reminds me Hitachino Nest’s Nipponia, similar style and actually quite similar feel to the finished product.

Iwate Kura Red Ale 3.1
35,5cl can from a supermarket in Tokyo. Pours dark cherry coloured with an off-white to beige head. Malty and caramelly aroma with some fruity and almost candy-like notes, hints of sour berries and citrus. Medium sweet with medium to moderate flavour intensity and a subtle bitterness. Quite nice in the end.

Iwate Kura Nagisa 3.2
Bottle from Yamaoka. This is made with yeast collected from Lilium maculatum. Fruity nose, lightly spicy from the yeast, some light caramel malts. Amber-orange, hazy, with a low fine head. Spicy, light hops, caramel and some chocolate, light apple. Interesting, not at all wild tasting. Don’t really see what this yeast does for it. There is an interesting fruitiness, though. Light carbonation, medium body.

Yoitsugi IPA 8% Ise kadoya a matte copper with an aroma of pine bark. Light bodied and possibly undercarbonated. The taste is woodsy pine - bitter but with a sugary sweetness. Meh.

Iwate Kura Arigatou Pale Ale 3.5
Draught at CBM. They definitely dry-hopped this one very generously, feels like a hoppy fruit salad with a decent biscuit base, tasty but maybe over the top and candy’ish, a tad too sweet on the finish too. These guys seem a bit all over the place recenlty including some lame blue beer stuff, so I guess this one comes as a decently nice and pleasant surprise.

Draught at Ol. Somewhat low on carbonation. Mostly malt-forward with caramel and some red fruit notes, muted green hops, bittersweet finish with boozy notes. Not too sure what they were going for, but quite a messy malty brew.

Tohoku Damashii Bakusui Lager 3.4
Draught at Craftsman. Had quite low expectations but thought that was actually ok. quite fruity with a lemony edge and decent biscuit malt base, smooth mouthfeel, fairly clean finish with a few boozy notes. Nothing amazing but drinkable fruity lager, not sure about the abv choice though.

Bottle from Tanakaya. Pours a deep orange with a half finger of head that dissipates fairly quickly. Citrusy nose with lots of biscuity malts, dekopon and yuzu. Sweet on the palate with a bold dekopon flavor. Yuzu comes out more on the finish. Average carbonation with a medium to heavy body. Feels kind of boozy as it warms. Meh, it’s OK, but pretty boring.

Tap at CBM Koenji. Huge, punchy grapefruit, orange and pineapple on the nose. Biscuity malts with juicy hop flavor. Well-balanced, but good bitterness on the palate. Slightly sweet, but not cloying. Bright and fun APA from a brewery that stepped outside it’s comfort zone with this one. Surprisingly good.

Pours a deep brownish black from the bottle with bubbly tan head that dissipates to leave light lace. Aroma and taste of dark roasted malts, toasted earthy notes, and a hint of saltiness. Thicker mouth, medium carbonation, decent oyster stout.

Iwate Kura Fukukou Ale 3.1
Bottle from Tanakaya. Pours a slightly hazy glowing neon yellow with a small sparkling wine-like head. Looks almost like a light cider or perry. Light bark and hay aromas with some grass, honey and light pepper. Dry on the palate with above average carbonation. The yeast seems a little harsh and has that peppery, sandpaper like thing going on when the beer is too yeasty. Still enjoyable, but might have been better in summer on a hot day. In no way sour, more musty or hay like.

Tap at Craft Hands. Pours a deep orange to brown with a small half-finger beige head of foam that lingers. Soft tea-like aromas with some light sugar and malty notes. Finish is fruity with a sweet taste that dissipates fairly quickly on the palate.

As Fresh Hop Classical Pale Ale. 4.5% 28 IBU and apparently made for the Spring Valley fresh hop event. On tap at Molto. A nice orange-gold with brown highlights & beige head. The minty fruity hop bouquet is really nice. The taste is very earthy then you get a sweet hit. Quite good. Seeing it listed as a Bitter makes more sense than Pale Ale.

Bottle from Tanakaya. Pours a clear, light gold with a small carbonated head that leaves a ring around the edge. Light funk aromas with some pear, grape cobwebs and horse blanket. Not really sour or tart at all, just basement saison-like with a touch of pear. Very interesting.

Iwate Kura Egoma IPA 3.7
Pours dark amber, bit of foam. Aroma has some hop freshness but what I am really looking for is "egoma". Not that I know how it should smell. I know what is "coma" (sesame) and I know that in Fukushima they feed "egoma" to pigs to get "egoma" flavored pork. This beer really has some sesame aroma, nicely balanced and not too overpowering. IPA hop character is maybe not so strong but the beer is fresh nicely drinkable and fully enjoyable. Maybe some herbal tea flavours instead of hops, genmaicha? Anyway, this beer went down fast. I applaud for the use of local ingredients and for doing that in a skilful way.

Iwate Kura Fujiyama Lambic 2.2
On tap into a tulip glass, showing a highly opaque orange peel with a finger of white foam. The nose shows a first impression of the barnyard and lambic funk but fades very quickly into the sweet, round lager-like malts. The palate is full bodied with a barely perceivable tart note at the end. But drinks like a typical Japanese macro-lager showing thick and sweet malts. A complete failure as a lambic because of fear of straying from the Japanese/German tradition/palate of lagers. God this is awful.
