Buckner Brewing Company Reviews

Buckner Porter 3
Tap - small foamy head, dark brown color, roasted malt aroma and flavor with mild choclate notes - pretty mild porter, which is fine by me as I’m not the biggest porter fan in the world

Buckner Oak Aged Left Coast Wheat 3.4
Tap - small foamy head, dark orange color, piney hop aroma and flavor - like a cross between a wheat and IPA, can taste a mild oak finish

Strykzone
Buckner Porter 2.8
Sampled at the brewpub. This is clear and looks more like a cola than a porter except with more red. A thin creamy tan head. Light roasted notes with grain. Really thin flavor. Call it coffee.

Strykzone
Buckner Belgian Witbier 2.8
Sampled at the brewpub. Clear golden and lightly carbonated. Not much going on with this beer. Sweet candi sugar and belgian yeast. Soft fruits. Malts. Just not enough of any.

Strykzone
Buckner Pale Ale 2.9
Sampled at the brewpub. Clear gold with a small white head. Soft malt and floral hops are smelled. This is sweet and has gentle bitterness. Hops are soft in the flavor profile. Some floral and citrus. Malt is light and sweet and some grain is tasted.

Strykzone
Buckner Amber 2.5
Sampled at the brewpub. Clear copper gold with a creamy off white head. An indistinct nose of malts. This is creamy in the mouth. Sweet and malty. There is just not a lot going on here but nothing offensive.

Strykzone
Buckner Raspberry Wheat 2.8
Sampled at the brewpub. Clear golden with a hint of copper. Raspberry in the nose and flavor. This is the same base as the honey wheat I just had and they taste the same. Subtract some of the honey and add the berries. This is uninspiring.

Strykzone
Buckner Honey Wheat 3
Sampled at the brewpub. It arrived with a lemon wedge. Big honey aroma and the lemon. Honey flavor, too. Wheat flavors. Light cloves and grain. This is light on flavor but is refreshing.

Bif
Buckner Pale Ale 3.2
On tap- Served a copper color with a nice head and good lacing. Aroma of citrus , fresh grain and bit of caramel. Taste of hops with a mild caramel sweetness. Nice bitterness and a dry finish. Fairly medium body, smooth and refreshing. Nice balance with a 6% ABV. Decent beer that went well with my meal at the brewpub.

Buckner Maple Bock 3.4
Tasted 10/10/09. Draft from the brewpub. Dark brown with amber highlights. Webbed bone white head. Medium bodied and smooth. This tastes rather fresh! Tangy yet malt dominant. Slight bitterness and touch rye. Subtly sweet. Well done!

Buckner Dunkel Weiss 2.4
Tasted 10/10/09. Draft from the brewpub. Dark brown hue with ruby highlights. Brainy ring of head. Aromas of caramel and dark toast. Lotta esters. Light to medium bodied and unnecessarily tart! Very tangy. Quite a detractor.

Narnad
Buckner IPA 3.5
An orange golden color with a very thick creamy head that sticks around a looooooong time. Aroma has a pine hops presence with some faint citrus and caramel endings. Beer is highly carbonated and really delivers the flavors well. Flavor starts off with some nice pine/resiny notes, solid grapefruit citrus tastes, a great amount of hops bitterness with a very solid malty compliment of caramel malt at the end. Overall this is by far their best beer with a great hops flavor that really stands out but the aroma could do a bit better with some dry hop additions, this would really make it a great beer.

Narnad
Buckner Honey Wheat 2.4
A very light clear golden color with no head and served with a lemon. Mild wheat aroma with a lemon and light sweetness from the honey (I guess). Wheat is in the flavor as well as some light citrus and finishes with a slight sourness. Overall the flavor is okay but there is NO density to it and it is completely missing they yeast that would really make this a decent beer. Not one I would have again.

Narnad
Buckner Pale Ale 2.9
Clear, golden color with a thick white, small foamy head that leaves great lacing. Aroma has a light MO biscuit maltiness and some light citrus and grassy hop notes. MO malty flavor is excellent with a very mild bitterness imparted from a citrus note. Overall this beer reminds me more of an English Ordinary Bitter/English Pale ale style rather than an APA. Probably their best beer there.

Narnad
Buckner Amber 2.7
Amber in color with a low white head that is kept up with a moderate carbonation rate. Slight smokiness in the aroma with a light caramel and fruity note at the end. Flavor has some MO malt in there with a light caramel and grassy hops note with the beer finishing with a good sweet malty ending. Overall an okay brew with a decent for the amber style.

Narnad
Buckner Belgian Witbier 2.7
Arrived in the sampler tray a golden color with a modestly thick and creamy head. Very light spicy aroma with a very faint grainy and wheat note. A light citrus, wheat notes with a watery flavor and an overall weak flavor. Overall nothing really there to offend and kinda bland for the style.

Buckner California Common 3.3

hayduke
Buckner Pale Ale 2.8
On draft from the brewpub in Cape Girardeau, MO. It came in pint glass a rich orange to gold color with a small white head.Nose of caramel malts and some floral hops. Smooth mouthfeel. Flavor is very odd. Some kind of spice which I assume comes from the hops. Finish is dry. Overall a somewhat odd brew though drinkable.

Buckner Belgian Witbier 2.8

Buckner Honey Wheat 3.2
Tasted 8/6/2007. Ragsdale’s bar in the basement of the brewery. Filtered with a pale golden hue. Layer of white head. Sweet clover honey citrus aromas. Light bodied and super smooth. This is all night smoothness. Light candy honey malts. Little to no bitterness. Slight effervescence. The palate is quite similar from start to finish. Light and modest. But still drinkable.

Buckner Pale Ale 3.3
Tasted 8/6/2007. Ragsdale’s below the brewery. Filtered with a golden hue. Layered clinging white head. Graham cracker cookie and citrus aromas. Light to medium bodied with short lived flavors. TOuch cereal and orange. Spicy hops. Off dry palate. Good grapefruity hops. Leaves a nice acidity on the finish. Good APA.

Buckner Porter 3.3
Tasted 8/6/2007. Ragsdale’s bar in the basement of the brewery. Filtered with a dark brown ruby hue. Bibbled ring of off white head. Cola and dark fruit in the nose. Anise pepper and dark chocolate, touch toffee. Nice nose. Medium bodied and smooth malts. Cocoa flavors and slightly smokey. Good flavors of cookie and cola. Fudgy. Solid. Maybe a touch light bodied for the style. Syrupy and cocoa. Another nice offering. Medium coffee roast and toasty anise flavors. Good drinkability. I obviously had a different batch then the previous two raters.

Tasted 8/6/2007. Basement bar to the brewery. Filtered with a golden hue. Clinging white head. Citrus graham cracker aromas. Slight maple note. Medium bodied and really nice. Good effervescence. Citrus cookie malt flavor. Good bitter acidity but nicely balanced. Really nice rolling palate. Orange citrus flavors mixed with doughy cookies. This was the favorite of the night.

Buckner Belgian Witbier 3.3
Tasted 8/6/2007. From the basement aspect of the brewing Co, Ragsdale’s. Mildly hazy with a golden straw hue. White ring of head. Bready bubblegum citrus nose. Nice serving temperature. Light to medium bodied with mild effervescence. Nice citrus blast with a touch dry body. Orange grainy flavors and slightly sticky. The dry finish compliments the sweet citrus flavor. Crisp yet rounded. Easy and unoffensive.

Buckner Breakfast Stout 3.7
Deep brown in the glass with a small, but lasting, brown head. Plenty of maple, chocolate, raisin and low raostiness aromas. Thick palate, but very smooth, if a bit uneven in weight. Tons of malts and oats. Good sweetness. A bit of coffee on the finish.

Buckner Peach Lambic 2.6
Peppery, peach aromas with a mineral component to the profile. Yeast smells and tastes a bit off. Pretty thin palate. Very American-tasting with light and gentle, but real, fruit and a slightly rough palate.

jefcon
Buckner Belgian Witbier 2.9
Cloudy and light yellow, with little head to speak of. Aromas of orange, slight yeast, and mineral water. Wet palate with authentic citrus and wheat flavors that compose a true profile. Still, light-tasting and rather underdeveloped.

Buckner IPA 3.8
A light, crisp brown in color wilth a varied lacing that really clings to the glass. Beery aromas that accent an apricot-ish hopcit and warm malts. A soapy, sharp bite greets the palate and settles in on the tongue. Lots of warming malts and a long, bitter finish. Exceptional hops on the palate. A very good, strong IPA.

Terminus
Buckner Porter 2.6
tap at the augusta bottoms beerfest alongside vyvvy. pours deep brown with a crappy soapy head. sour and charred nose. body has watery feeling and no carbonation for the most part. sour cherries and chocolate flavors. man, this was bad. I had to dump mine on the grass!

Terminus
Buckner Pale Ale 2.4
tap at augusta bottoms beerfest alongside vyvvy. light orange with a small foamy white head. wierd aromas here-dusty and definately somewhat oxidized with some light hops. flavors go nowhere-badly dusty malts with some soggy notes as well. body is thin and watery with no substance whatsoever. could have been the worst beer at the fest (other than the amber ale that vyvvy had from some winery present at the fest).

vyvvy
Buckner Porter 2.5
Sampled at Augusta Bottoms Beer Festival 2006. My second and last from the brewery at the Fest. Pours deep brown with a tan soapy head. The aroma has sour mellon and some roastiness. The body is watery and there is very little carbonation. The taste has sour fruitiness and chocolate. The finish is sour and roasty. Not a good porter.

vyvvy
Buckner Pale Ale 2.4
Sampled at Augusta Bottoms Beer Festival 2006. Not the best sample of the day by far. Poured lightly hazy yellow with a small unattractive head. Aroma has dusty malts and spicy hops. The body is thin and watery with not much carbonation to speak of. The initial taste is watery dusty malts. The finish has a good amount of spicy hops for a small period then it is back to the watery taste. Overall a bad pale - the flash of spicy hops right at the beginning of the finish is nice, but that is about all.

Philip
Buckner Porter 3.4
On tap at Buckner. Solid, but not overwhelming. Pours a proper porter color with a diminishing head. What’s lacking here is the hops. Its most semi-sweet chocolate with some alcohol on the finish, but I would have never guessed 7.5 (I suppose that’s a good thing in some regards.) There’s just not much of a finish here, and the flavors aren’t all that strong. I think its an easy drinking porter. Its good, not spectacular.

Buckner Nut Brown 2.9
Good color from a traditional English brown ale -- not too dark or murky. Sweet chocolate and hazelnut aromas. The bittering punch from English hops slides into a rougher texture, dominated by bitter chocolate notes and faint citrus. Kind of a mixed bag, but quenching on the finish and balanced throughout.

kwoeltje
Buckner Porter 3.6
(growler from the brewpub) Deep black with very little tan head. Roast malt aroma. Flavor of roast malt with chocolate and coffee flavors.

Buckner Sweet Oatmeal Stout 3.4
(draught at the brewpub) Deep black with small tan head and nice lace. Roast malt aroma. Sweet malt flavor with hints of coffee and chocolate.

kwoeltje
Buckner IPA 3.5
(draught at the brewpub) Light amber with almost no head but nice lace. Hops aroma. Nicely balanced malt and hops with a solid cascade hops finish. More of an English IPA than a West Coast IPA.
Saturday, February 11, 2006

kwoeltje
Buckner Amber 3.3
(draught at the brewpub) light orange amber. with light tan head. Nice lace. Mild aroma. Nice biscuit malt flavors with just a hint of bitterness in the finish.

SledgeJr
Buckner Oktoberfest 2
On tap at the brewpub. Not true to style as this is an ale, not a lager. Tremendously thick head. Reddish amber color with a white head. Malty nose. Tart tongue tingle that embodies a slight off-flavor. This might be closer to a scottish ale, but misses the mark on the attempt at marzen.
Thursday, December 08, 2005

SledgeJr
Buckner Pumpkin Ale 3
On tap at the brewpub. Cloudy amber in color. Looks a little like hot agarose. Smells like cake batter. Seems more like pumpkin cake instead of pumpkin pie. Strong flavor that seems more like butternut squash than Jack-o-lantern. Definitely not spice-heavy. The bartender proclaimed that she observed many pumpkins being "slaughtered" to make this.

SledgeJr
Buckner Maple Bock 2.7
On tap at the brewpub. Dark brown with garnet highlights and an off-white head. Sweet roasted aroma. Has a clearly discernable maple and vanilla flavor. Not a common brew, but not that outstanding either. Mildly hopped as are most of the beers served here.

SledgeJr
Buckner Raspberry Wheat 2.7
On tap at the brewpub. Golden yellow with a thick white head. Some chill haze present. Strong raspberry aroma without a sickeningly sweet chemical fruit flavor. Fairly decent balance. Nice hop level results in a dry bitter finish. Good attempt at a style I generally dislike. As with all the beers here, great lacing in the glass.
