Cask conditioned gravity dispense Northants Beer Festival 2011. A nearly black beer with an off-white head. Sweet fruity aromas with licorice but thereís something odd and undefinable and not altogether pleasant too. Burnt cornflakes and fruity raost in the mouth. An odd stickiness. Caramel too. Strange.

Cask handpull, The Wig and Pen, Northampton, 07/05/11 (second visit of the day- pissing it down and put off by the dismal condition of the beer in some of the other non-JDW pubs in town). Deep ruby with a slender cream neck. Orange, cranberry and coffee threads to the aroma. Slick and earthy with English woodland, earth and mocha characteristics- a big mild but not a stout. Good roast, coal and dunked digestives as it opens up. Decent.

5 Simple sweet malts, not beery enough.
3 Pale orange, almost no head.
5 Simple malty body. No guts, no bite.
3 Watery.
10 Wooly - probably on its way off? Had some better things from Ufford, so Iíll give them the benefit of the doubt.

A Mes rate. Rated at my desk during office hours, but it was the morning before our Christmas trip.
Big thanks to David for bringing this is in as a take out from his local. Cleanish dark golden with a oily head. Reasonably hoppy and plenty of body, just slightly medicinal and the alcohol gives a little too much sweetness. Drinkable but not a patch on the White Hart.

Big thanks to David for bringing this is in as a take out from his local. Clean gold with a thin white head and plenty of condition for a take out. Plenty of hops giving up some good citric fruity character with some excellent dry earthy malt underneath. Pleasing hints of straw and hay too. Faint lick of peat and spice in the finish. Easy drinking and very enjoyable.

Cask, The Tobie Norris, Spamford. Lacy straw pint collared with froth. Burton kolsh, farmyard manure sweetness, lemon and lime jelly soft tangy nose. Immaculate snatchy sessions mingling hum, citrus and sweetness with balance. Zing but no harshness; sweet oaty malt creaminess, maybe US hops, maybe not. I like that ambiguity sometimes. Soft, lemony, sulphurous and delicate. GOATY. This one well and truly hit the spot.

A gentle, easy drinking stout with a pleasant outlook on life. Bright copper coloured. Nice aromatic hop aroma with light fruit, caramel and tobacco. Slightly harsh hoppy flavour but some nice fruity malt sorts it out. Hoppy notes are much better in the lingering bitter finish that eventually ends up wheaty. Interesting and tasty bitter.
