3.3 Hidatakayama Pale Ale (Can) Pours slightly hazy amber with big off white head. Aroma is pretty subtle - a bit peppery. Good mouthfeel - medium bodied with plenty of soft bright carbonation. There’s hops throughout the palate with a good bitter finish. There’s some caramel malt behind this. I get hints of tangerine. Very drinkable. Tuesday, January 3, 2023

4.1 Hidatakayama Karumina 500ml stubby. Deep burgundy pour with highlights and lasting light tan foam. Lovely aroma of dates, brown sugar, dark caramel malt. Flavour peaks as it nears room temp, dark sweet malts with plum, raisin bread, brown sugar, caramel and anise, full flavour hit on the palate. Med-full feel, nicely carbonated, long warming finish. Not overly complex or perhaps smoothly integrated flavours, but really delicious. Monday, April 29, 2019

4 Hidatakayama Stout Can from near Takayama Station. Pours black with highlights, quickly dissipating tan head. Aroma opens as it warms, roasted malts, anise, coffee, leather, ash, chocolate, nothing overpowering. Flavour shows mostly rich dark roasted chocolatey malts, hints of leather and anise. Medium body with a great backhalf - just when you feel the bitterness rise and sense acridity it glides into a smooth long velvety chocolate finish, dense flavour yet so easy to drink. Damn, I wish I'd bought more. Friday, March 22, 2019

3.4 Hidatakayama Pale Ale Bought by Takayama Station, drunk from the can. Caramel forward, fruity with rich biscuit malt, a touch of cola. Refreshing beer with just right carbonation and bitterness, smooth underlying body, goes down well. Thursday, March 21, 2019

3.7 Hidatakayama Dark Ale 5% can in Takayama. Lovely looking amber-bronze with a light beige finger of foam. Very nutty aroma, caramel and raspberry. Toasted grain malt flavour, nut and berry flourishes. Sherbet-type fizziness with a bit of chew to the body and plenty of bitterness to finish. A bit underrated on here, I thought this was a great English ale. Thursday, March 21, 2019

Monday, August 7, 2017

3.7 Hidatakayama Thada Ratu Tap at the Gifu Fest where it was listed as 6%, I’m glad I got to try this summer seasonal though an English Ale (how it was described by staff) to me is a bit of an odd choice for one. A dull brown with soft cocoa aroma. Malty but not really sweet, bready and cocoalicious. Lovely balance and drinkability. Saturday, July 1, 2017

4 Hidatakayama Karumina 500ml bottle. Very dark brown shade. Off-white head. Complex aroma of fruity plum and grape, brown sugar, oatmeal and raisin cookie, spice. Tastes fruity with apple and black liquorice notes. Not too sweet. A bit like Gulden Draak. One of the most interesting and complex beers I’ve had in a long time. Thursday, November 12, 2015

3.7 Hidatakayama Weizen Tap at Beerfes Kamikochi 2015. Pours nice hazy golden, persistent and foamy head. Aroma is thick, I am getting some koshihikari rice that feels actually alright (usually I don’t like that). No idea if they used it or not. Anyhow, also one of the strongest banana aromas that I have ever had in a weizen. Taste is also full on, thick with banana, candy, cloves and some herbal character. Good stuff!
