2.9 Southwest Isotopes Amber Draft. Clear amber body with a short off-white head. Grainy aroma with hints of citrus, spice. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Slightly tart. Flavors are muted. Reminds me of Sam Adams, but not as well balanced. 3.4 Southwest Isotopes Amber This one needs its Ratebeer profile updated... Now packaged and sold as "Slammin’ Amber," made by the Isotopes Brewing Co. in Moriarty, NM (a town near Albuquerque). This brew has a clear red-copper color and a thin head that quickly dissipates. Its aroma is tangy and initially somewhat unpleasant, but in a few moments it settles into an intriguing caramel and rye blend, with spicy hops undertones. The taste is very refreshing and crisp, while also being a bit earthy and chewy. It has a good amount of hops tingle. Mouthfeel is silky and rich. Aftertaste is clean. This one was better than I expected. Wednesday, June 8, 2011

3.2 Southwest Isotopes Amber Bottle from Liz. As Isotopes Slammin’ Amber. Pours rather dark amber with a foamy beige head. Aroma of lightly roasted malt with a little bit of floral and fruit. Med. body. Flavor is more ESB than APA. Not all that bitter, but there is a floral/fruit "tang". Interesting. Friday, December 10, 2010

4.2 Southwest Isotopes Amber Draft pint at the Route 66 Microbrewery in ABQ airport, 9/20/06, under the new "Isotopes Amber" name. Dark amber-orange-red with a pillowy head. Served in an iced glass (bummer) but anyway ... Nice little hoppy bite starts this off, then it settles into a nice solid earthy ale. Me likey!! Thursday, September 28, 2006

2.2 Southwest Blueberry Blonde Poured yellow with a medium sized white head. Light aroma of blueberries. Not much else. Mild taste of blueberries with a light malt backbone and little hops. Refreshing but lacking any real flavor. Blueberry finish. Monday, May 17, 2004

1.7 Southwest Lager Very clear straw color and soapy white head. Aroma of buttered popcorn and honey. Oddly sweet for a light beer. Thin palate. Strictly for the ladies. Waitress said it was a "Michelob Ultra clone" and "Atkin's compliant". Enough said. Saturday, April 10, 2004

2.1 Southwest Uptown Brown tap at brewery-Is this Kool-Aid Beer? (my MRomero548 quote in this rating). very light appearance for a brown ale-boring! flavors were very sweet, but in a sugar-kool-aid way. This was not a brown ale-it had no nutty notes whatsoever! Just plain bad! Saturday, April 10, 2004

3 Southwest Sandia Stout tap at brewery-weak coffee aroma, but the aroma that was there was pretty good. decent tan head along rim of glass. thin body and some roasted coffee notes in the finish. boring Saturday, April 10, 2004

3.2 Southwest Pablos Porter tap at brewery-They had 2 versions of this beer and the cask one was better IMO (whaleman and MRomero548 didn't think so) the tap version was very opaque for a porter and the cask one was much better looking. pretty standard flavors going on. somewhat thin body. just average Saturday, April 10, 2004

3.3 Southwest Livin Large IPA tap at brewery-C-note aroma all the way-not to bad! nice copper hue with some white head along rim of the glass. malty/hoppy flavors that are just kinda weak. some grassy notes on the finish also. average Saturday, April 10, 2004

1.9 Southwest Lager tap at brewery-looks like an american standard. virtually no aroma other than some corn notes(grain). flavor is very sweet and tastes like a sweetened tecate can. nuff said! Saturday, April 10, 2004

2.7 Southwest Big Bang Blonde tap at brewery-pours golden yellow with no head. slightly spicy flavors-thin body and more like a lager than an ale. good for those "lighter" beer people in Albuquerque. Saturday, April 10, 2004

3.5 Southwest Isotopes Amber tap at brewery-light copper hue-pretty standard pale ale appearance. decent white head-citrus aroma. flavors were soapy, piney and pretty decent. a fairly good pale. Saturday, April 10, 2004

3.6 Isotope Barley Wine tap at brewery-sour apple/carmel aroma-slightly yeasty. dark copper hue with no head. Ok, but could use more punch all around. Saturday, April 10, 2004

1.7 Southwest Lager Thin disappearing head atop a watery very light yellow body. Light fruitiness-apple. Light maize and slight vinegar flavor in the finish. Avoid. Saturday, April 10, 2004

3 Southwest Livin Large IPA Pours orange with a thin white dissipating head. Medium hopped with mild earth notes. Decent but somewhat lacking. The pale ale seemed closer to an IPA than this. Saturday, April 10, 2004

3.5 Isotope Barley Wine Pours clear amber with a thin head. Mild barleywine aroma. Light caramel flavors and an alcohol afterbite. Pretty nice but could use more body. Saturday, April 10, 2004

3.8 Isotope Barley Wine Deep caramel color. Nice balanced aroma with decent hop presence. Interesting flavor of caramel candy, honey, butterscotch, coconut, wood, and smoke (a novel quality in a barley wine). Sweet, hoppy and good. Big chewy body. Could do with less sweetness, but doesn't strike me as poorly attenuated. Just needs some shelf time. Thursday, January 22, 2004

3 Southwest Duke City Amber tap-billy's long bar-Albuquerque, NM-copper/red/ruby appearance with very little carbonation. Malts all the way through the palate and flavor profile. Very flat. I should re-rate this one on a fresh sample. Saturday, December 13, 2003

3.3 Southwest Wilcox IPA Amber color, medium head, and abundant carbonation. Intense hop aroma of pine and spice. Nice hop flavor with some malt character retained. Not killer-hopped like too many trendy IPAs. Shows restraint on the part of the brewmaster. Thursday, July 24, 2003
whaleman |
2.6 Southwest Sun Mesa Wheat Cloudy pale straw appearance. Very thin head yet some lacing. Yeast and wheat aroma. Some sweetness. An average American Wheat on par with Sierra Nevada. Thursday, July 24, 2003

3.1 Southwest Uptown Brown Light carbonation and small-medium head. Copper color. Malty aroma. Moderate caramel and butterscotch candy sweetness. Decent palate that does feel a little syrupy but not cloying. Thursday, July 24, 2003
whaleman |
3.2 Southwest Sandia Stout Dark-brown to black with some amber tones. Tan head was thick, foamy, and persistent. Chocolate and faint smoke aroma. Mouthfeel was thin (for a stout), silky, and airy. It was almost hard to feel this one going down. Dry, with some chocolate and weak coffee flavors. Some hops in the finish. Unlike the elite stouts, the aftertaste was nothing to get jazzed about. Thursday, July 24, 2003

2.9 Southwest Kaktus Kolsch Gold-yellow. Small head but decently carbonated body. Sweet, melony aroma and flavor. Light and smooth palate. Holds some appeal. Thursday, July 24, 2003

3.5 Southwest Duke City Amber Golden amber color. Thick persistent head and tons of lacing. Malty aroma with hop undertones of pepper and pine. Foamy mouthfeel. I’m usually quick to malign anything called an amber but this beer almost tastes like a bottle-conditioned homebrew rather than an obnoxious, clingy amber (read: Fat Tire). This was a pleasant and unexpected surprise. Thursday, July 24, 2003

3.2 Southwest Isotopes Amber Now-called Albuquerque Isotope Pale Ale in an apparent marketing arrangement with the Albuquerque Isotopes baseball team. This is still essentially the same beer I believe. Nice head and gold-orange color. Hop aroma is fragrant and faintly spicy. There’s also an unexpected aroma of bananas. Piney, peppery flavor. A decent beer but not much distinguishes it from so many contemporary Pale Ale microbrews. Thursday, July 24, 2003
