Schwarzes Kreuz Vollbier
Herber Antrunk, in dem das Aroma alleine steht und auf nachzügler wartet.Später wenig würzig, der Gesamteindruck ist aber positiv. Recht süffig, außer der Herbe sticht zum Ende noch der Hopfen hervor. Angenehm frisches Bier, urig! 11/10/10/11//10

From bottle at the Pigs Ear Beer Festival, London on 6 December 2006 at 4.2%. Coppery amber colour. Yuck. Big butterscotch aroma. I hate that. Malty flavours – nuts, toffee and doughy bread. Tastes rather better than it smells but still not too good.

On tap at Brauerei Scwarzes Kreuz, Eggolsheim, during Fin and Loz’s cycle ride around villages to the South and South East of Bamberg, Germany 19-06-10 Copper in colour with a white head and busy carbonation. There is some toffee in the mouth and a steady sweetness. This is quite, quite different from the really refreshing Vollbier and Lager that we had at Witzgall, its nice but a bit chewy at times. On gravity at the keller. Vaguely malty, caramelly aroma. Malty palate with light earth and caramel. Fresh and clean, a good country dark. Simple, well-balanced and refreshing.

Draft @ keller. dark vollbier though hard to discern exact color in krug. Nice head leaves ring lace. The aroma is mild with good mineral and asphalt notes. the palate is slick with low carbonation. Nice roast here, leaves nice toasty tastes. Clean and drinkable. Subtle chocolate and minerals emerge in layers. Not bursting with flavor but is subtle, enjoyable, and grows on me.

The bottle looks really good, the beer in the glass also. Quite dark, nice head. Tastes sourish-fruity, very interesting. Finish a little bit malty. Really good beer!

From tap at the brewpub. Dark golden with a huge, dens head. The aroma has notes of caramel and malt. The flavour has a light sweetness, notes of caramel, malt and a light grapefruit-like bitterness. IMO it’s a bit out of balance and the flavour is quickly gone, but the bitterness lasts a bit longer.

(bottle, bought at the brewery, filled, capped and labelled in front of me & draught at the Bierkeller) Clear, copper colour with a short off-white foamy head. Sweet, slightly toasty and nutty nose with subtle honeyish fruity notes, toffee, a touch of liquorice spice and well-balanced herbal hops. Aromatic toasty malt-accented taste with toffee, honey and a present herbal blend. Sweet-bitter, toasty and herbal hoppy, almost lingering finish. Well-balanced Franconian Lager. One should try to get it fresh, at best from the tap at the brewery or the Bierkeller.

Bottle Pigs Ear. Diacetyl. Other than the butter pop-corn this is a dull, pale beer of little character. Not offensive - just boring.

Draught, at the brewpub, October 2006. Bronze, moderate thin off white head and good condition. Pleasant but muted caramel toffee maltiness in the nose, quite hop bitter in the mouth with a balancing full bodied toffee maltiness, and a lingering sweet toffee finish with a slight burnt toasty bitterness.

Bottled - Pigs Ear BF. Hmm interesting how pivnizub says it’s straw colour yet bierkoning’s and our bottle was amber! THis is slightly hazy and it had a beige bubbly head. The aroma is fruity with some toffee and diacetyl. The taste is excellent. Fruity with good hops and some dry malty flavours. Very well balanced and very tasty.

Bottle, bought at the brewery. Yes, this very much local brewery bottles his beer. 4,5% on the label. Amber color. Caramelly, buttery aroma. A clear barnyard smell. Medium bodied. Sweetish, malty, caramelly flavor. A somewhat dirty palate. Far from perfect beer, but you probabaly have to taste it from tap, like Pivnizub did. But being the designated driver, that sadly wasn’t possible.

From the tap (in the brewery-garden "Keller"): Straw coloured, white, thin but long lasting head; hoppy (herbal) nose, creamy texture, low carbonation; full-bodied flavour with a smooth dry and bitter finish. Very franconian.....O.K:
