Zenglein Have You Ever
Amber with a sudsy white head that goes the duration. Tropical aroma with lots of lemon peel and scented hand lotion. Taste is bitter the whole way through. Medium bodied, dry finish, not exactly refreshing, but crisp and clean. Decent.

Zenglein Zwickelbier
Vom Faß beim Zenglein in Oberschleichach. Etwas ruppig bitterer Abgang. - Unterdurchschnittliches Frankenlager, zu dünn und lieblos gehopft. Enttäuschend.

TAR
2.4
Zenglein Zwickelbier
Draft at the defunct brewpub in Oberaurach in Mar. 2015: Jagged sodalike head. Dark amber with curiously no yeast haze. Very dull and lifeless aroma of paper, caramel, cardboard, toffee and a hint of grape. Pointy and gassy carbonation. Limp and caramelly on entry, with spent tealeaves exacerbating the weak malt structure. Malt is mostly buried by curiously high sugar levels. Not much depth or detail to the grain. Fairly unclean, with hints of grape and a metallic twang creeping in late. Sweet and dull finish is comprised of caramel, hay and even a trace of oxidation. Nonexistent hop bitterness allows the sugars to continue unabated. A soulless beer with no bright notes to be found, as much I searched and searched for them.

Zenglein Pilsener
Draft @ Brauerei Zenglein, Nov. 2015: Dim golden. Foamy, nonuniform white head. Fresh Spalter-like hop aromas of candied fennel, pepper, grass, hopsack, with underlying mineral, toasty pils malt and hay. Hints of metal and paper, as well. Slightly prickly carbonation. Limp body. Nice medley of spicy, peppery hops and minerals tempered by softer fresh-hay notes. An odd fruity twang negatively affects the body’s snappiness, as do metallic notes. The hops are one-dimensional, although they do exhibit a pleasant lemony juiciness which contrasts with the strong minerals. Prominent candyish yeast and fennel seed accents precede a curiously hushed bitterness in the lifelessly malty finish. Hints of metal linger. Sad that this beer has allegedly slipped so much in quality over the years, as now it’s merely decent. Not as poor as their zwickelbier, though.

Zenglein Pilsener
Draft at the brewery in Oberaurach. Lasting foamy white head atop a clear gold body that is just a tad darker than you usually find in Pils. Malty aroma shows the purity of Pilsner malt like few others do: cereal grain, baked baguette, warm-from-the-oven crackers with touches of honey. There’s the quietest suggestion of minerals / mineral water, and while at first the hop aromatics seem mild, they eventually unfold as apricot and herbs and cracked pepper and lemon, and integrate well with the fragrant malt as it approaches room temperature. Medium body, rich and filling in the mouth with low sweetness and moderate to high bitterness, the flavor balance is lovely and the ingredient expression is solid, hops are enjoyably oily-juicy, malt is pure, and fermentation clean. I understand Zenglein no longer makes this themselves, it’s contracted to Göller in Zeil am Main, but considering taste only, it’s very good, proving again that it’s not the company as much as the individual doing the work. It’s rare to find this character in a Pils (even in Franconia), it’s an incredibly drinkable, malt-driven, spicy, hoppy, succulent lager that does everything right. So darn clean and so darn malty. I originally scored this at 4.4 (!) so I had to go back a few days later to make sure I wasn’t fooling myself or caught in a strange moment of love. It’s not as good as the first try, the body seems just a tad edgy, and the expression seems milder in the mouth and retronasal. And while the aroma isn’t LOUD, it nicely encapsulates what you want from German malt and hops. I would fairly say that this is better than 90% of Pils in Germany, and one of the best smelling Pils overall. (4.0)

Re-rated November 2015 and it’s a shadow of its former self: still hoppy in the way of lemon-pepper, but it’s noticeably metallic, the body is rougher, and the malt is very simple caramel. Such is life. (3.1)

Zenglein Zwickelbier
Draft at the defunct brewery in Oberaurach. Hazy brown body with a medium-sized off-white head. Malty aroma impression is cereals and nutty baked bread crust with some softer touches that remind of apple bake and honey-coated pastries. The yeast in the nose is minimal, giving it a fresh liveliness, while aroma hops show faint floral touches of apricot. There’s a minute amount of buttery diacetyl in the nose when it reaches room temperature but it doesn’t show in the texture. Medium body, rich and filling, flavor impression is malty and crusty and nutty and apple-like. It’s sweet but well supported by carbonation and hop bitterness, the body is long-lasting and savory and just a little bit chewy. Fragrant and lively and bready with just enough apricot-citrus hoppiness to elevate the experience. It’s a little too cloudy for my liking, but it’s just a matter of aesthetics as the aroma and flavor and mouth feel seem unaffected by the amount of yeast in suspension. Unique, rustic, flavorful malty dunkles zwickelbier. (here is that zesty citrus / acid yeastiness that you talked about Joe). (3.5)

Retired in November 2015 and like the Pils this one is nothing like the year before: very basic caramel malt profile, no yeastiness, no hoppiness, and it’s papery. (2.7)

Hopfiger, stark karbonisierter Antrunk. Passend ist die milde Bitterkeit, die sonst die Süße verdecken würde. Im Mittelteil grasig, der Hopfen ist das Hauptaroma, gefolgt von einer würzigen, fast etwas rauchig wirkenden Malzigkeit. Bitterer Abgang.

Draught at the brewpub. Clear golden colour. Big stable white head. The flavour starts off with a hint of smoke. Quite mild, but nice enough. There seems to be a hint of bread or perhaps barnyard, but that might just be the smoke. The landlord says there is no smoke malt in there, though.

Draught at the brewpub. Cloudy yellow, rich head. Perfumy nose with grass underneath. Very soft with generously amounts of malt covered in thick layers of grassy, resiny hops and some minerals. Massive late bitterness. Realy good. I assume this is just an unfiltered version of the pils, but flavourwise it makes all the difference in the world.

Bottle, shared by Papsoe. Pours a clear, copper body, with an off-white to beige head. Sweet, a bit cellary/dusty aroma with caramel and fruityness, mostly dried fruits. Nice, sweet and malty start on the flavor, then some fruityness and alcohol-notes comes through, and there’s even room for some bitterness. Full, quite sweetish and slightly warming mouthfeel. Nice, pleasant and warming. (071005)
