HaandBryggeriet Funky Black
50 cl bottle, batch #805. Deep mahogany / cherry colour in front of a light bulb, no head, no visible carbonation. Cherry aroma jumps right out of the bottle and hit my nose. Mouthfeel is on the dry side, flavour is packed with fermented red berries, and lasts for a long time. Sourness is not at the overwhelming end of the scale, it should be drinkable for most beer lovers out there i.m.o.

My goodness. This one is not for the faint hearted. The acidity in this one is really prominent. Wash away everything that is left of flavor from other things you have tried that they.
Murky brown/red color with almost no head. Some off white bubbles. Rich nice aroma. Medium to full body and a soft carbonation. Rich prominent acidity. Lots of cherries in the flavor.

50 cl, bottle fermented, batch #961. Hazy, golden amber, medium carbonated, sediments galore, thin white head. Aroma is not too dominant, hints of fresh apples and grapefruit. Mouthfeel is pure carbonation at first, then long lasting notes of hop bitterness and dryness. Flavours of spicy, peppery hops, with a solid malty backbone. A really flavoursome IPA.

Clear deep brown body with a small beige head. Strong aroma of fermented red berries, caramel and funky yeast. Strong flavour that follows the aroma. Moderate sweet taste, light to moderate sourness and a long-lasting light bitter finish. Mid-bodied with a close to flat carbonation (which I guess is due to the fact that I sampled a glass that had circulating our table for quite some time. Aaah, the magic of beer festivals!).

Bottle. Snifter. Deep brown with small, light brown head Medicore head retention and lacing. Aroma is really complex at first some vinegar and acetic notes, well hidden by tart berries along with some caramel. In the end perfect winey notes broken by oaky character. Taste is moderatly sour with nice malty sweetness in the end, also a touch of bitterness. Medium body, oily and creamy texture, average carbonation, finish is tart and astringent. In overall very interesting and complex wild ale. The sour notes are well balanced by caramel malty profil. Definetely worth trying.

Bottle from Flesland Tax Free Shop, Bergen. Pours a deep brown, near-black body with a huge foamy off-white head. Nose is grass, licorice, herbs, chocolate and hints of leather, red fruits and pine. Taste is dark chocolate, licorice, grass, herbs and hints of coffee, grapefruit, minerals, wet leaves and pine. Medium body, fizzy carbonation. This specimen of the Black IPA race is on the stout-ish side of the fence, which is fine with me but not too horribly exciting - particularly since the hops seem old and faded. Not too bad, but definitely over-carbonated, which dampens the overall impression a bit.

50 cl, bottle conditioned, batch #988. Nice looking witbier, hazy and light coloured with a thin white head, low carbonation. Aromas of wheat malt, coriander and belgian yeast. Mouthfeel is a bit dry with medium carbonation. Tastes of wheat, bubble-gum, citrus and banana esters from the yeast. On it’s own feet, this it’s not a great beer in my opinion. It will probably grow to a greater beer along with suitable foods, like shrimps, oysters, chicken or pork.

Huge fizzy-creamy longlasting head. Aroma is mineraly, co2 stinging in the nose, weeds, sap, leafs, minerals, grass, bark, pine needles, dark malts, sour coffee, alcohol, cardboard. Taste is harsh mineraly, weeds, minerals, bark, burnt grain, sour coffee, cardboard, alcohol, pine needles, grass, leafs, harsh hops, citrus peel, burnt toast. Longlasting bitterness, dry and harsh mouthfeel. If they in this beer have tried to replicate the point where the tires of a plane slams onto the airstrip, then I guess they’ve probably nailed it. Otherwise, it’s a total bummer...

Bottle. Sensoric. Very deep brown/reddish with thin, almost none, light brown head. Poor head retention and lacing. Aroma is intense acetic, vinous with fruits - cherries notes. The unpleasant acetic notes are well hidden by vinous character and lightly malty profile. Taste is moderatly sour and dry. The sourness is quite noticable from the beginning in the end the intensity makes it slightly warming. Light body, watery texture, lively carbonation, finish is dry and sour.

Aroma: sour ale with strong undertone of acetone; Appearance: chocolatey brown that’s pretty flat on pour; not sure if it’s always like that or the age of the bottle; Taste: starts very tart/sour and ends with almost a stout taste. Odd. Palate: medium-heavy body with long, tart finish; Overall: okay; seems to follow trend of putting two different styles into one beer; not sure if I like this combo. Would not buy again.

Aroma is roasted malts (mainly coffee and dark chocolate combined with black and red fruits (cherries, plums, some raisins), also touch of smokey notes. Nearly medium caramel and brown sugar notes. Taste is in the beginning light to medium bitter, but soon it becomes something between semi-sweet and semi-dry. Medium body, oily texture, soft to average carbonation, finish is semi-dry and malty. Booze is not so noticable, just a lightly warming. In overall nice, drinkable and full beer. Not so heavy as most of holiday ales.
