Hornpout No Limit Amber Ale
Bomber from Winooski Bevy - Hazy amber that spouted foam for about 3 minutes. Metallic, rusty aroma. Hint of sourness on the nose as well. Well, I’d say its on the way to being infected. Hypercarbonation, malty caramel, chocolate hints. Otherwise undrinkable.

Hornpout No Limit Amber Ale
Bomber purchased at Winooski Discount Beverage. This was about 6 months old at time of consumption. Bottle had been cellared in an idea environment. Metallic, funky, sour and acetic aroma. I get a little sweet caramel in the nose, but this certainly reaks of a possible infection. Very murkey, hazy, dark amber body with and overly huge, frothy, yellowish head. Beginning is off--metallic. Definite infection present. Finish does have some slight redeeming caramelly slight roasted malty tones. Still, this is off.

Hornpout No Limit Amber Ale
Bomber - Poured a quite dark amber (almost brown) in color with a foamy light tan head that faded to a thin coating on the top of the beer. Aroma is not that great. Elements of malty sweetness and some mild hops, but that is overwhelmed by an unpleasant rubber/bandaid smell that, as a homebrewer myself, I know usually signals a bacteria infection. I have ditched whole batches of beer that exhibited this unwanted characteristic. Flavor is malty and sweet and fairly well balanced with hop bitterness, but (again) there is a "off" flavor similar to that described above and some latent sourness that removes any lasting positive rememberance. I might try this beer again at some point, but I will make sure that I get some that has a significantly newer brew date than the one that I have now. I would place this in the category of some of my earliest homebrew attempts... not something commercially viable and that people pay $$ for. Disappointment... :-(

Super pale, bubbly pour; very carbonated. Nice puffy white head. Mild hop and citrus aroma, nothing exciting. Thin and oily mouthfeel. Not a great beer.

Hornpout Muddy Bottom Porter
22 oz bottle purchased at City Market, Burlington, 4/8/06, sampled from a Corsendonk glass at cellar temperature. Looks great: muddy/hazy very dark brown with thick lasting creamy tan head....the aroma, less impressive but still not half bad: fairly typical roasty/sweet cocoa aroma, caramel, molasses, perhaps a bit of cheddar—dissapointingly, somewhat low strength, and as it warms an ominous grapy quality intrudes.....and disfigures the flavor profile terribly, sweet, rather winey/lactic taste, this is too old and somewhat soured, moderate to high carbonation, a bit of nice roasty character does enter at the finish but doesn’t save it....palate too thin, with very little malt presence, somewhat syrupy, soda-like. Frustrating because there is some little quality here, I thought for a moment these guys were on track, but this ends up not much better than their first two, and it’s incomprehensible to me how a soured, old beer like this could make a first appearance on shelves in this condition. Well at least it looked pretty.

Ughh. Someone needs to check their bottling equiptment. I am pretty sure this one bottle was faulty. Sickeningly tart and somewhat salty, the brew smelled like unfermented yeast. I’m not sure if this is bottle conditioned, but if so, there may have been too much yeast added. That’s a shame because it is a good looking beer. Deep amber with an IMMENSE rocky off white head. Lots of lacing.

Hornpout Pale Ale
The Lure:
Fizzy, noisy carbonation forms a generous, lasting, big-bubbled head. Grainy malts undermine the very fruity sweetness. Oranges and peaches predominate, as mild hop allusions whisper. A slight mineral character might come from the hops.

The Festivities:
Citrusy hop fruitiness mostly evokes oranges, preceding the peachy esters which cling to the malt sweetness. Expansive carbonation is somewhat too forthcoming, but remains good-natured. Earthy hops attempt an aftertaste, but fade away quickly. A simple and easy drinking fruity pale ale.

Transcendence:
Withered herbs can still give some flavor.

Pours a deep copper bronze with a frothy and well-lacing white head. Sweet lemony citrus hoppy aroma has a good crystal malty balance. Starts with a semi-sweet, toasty maltiness balanced with lots of citrusy hops. Finishes crisp, dry and bittersweet. I thought this was a very nice APA, but apparently I’m in the minority on that. This was one of the few times I rated a beer having no idea what others had been rating it.

Bottle. Pours a muddy amber with a huge off white straw like head. Smells of cobwebs and malty. Taste is semi-sweet with chewable vitamins, chocolate and roasted malt. Finish is somewhat tarte and very metallic.

Bottle. Pours coppery with a fluffy head. Smells of grass, yogurt, some orange, Tastes caramelly and a bit on the watery side. Not enough in the way of bittering on this one. The hop notes are there but subtle with a thin note of citrus but otherwise sub par.

Appears a light gold with a loose white head and mild carbonation bubbles rising to the top. Nice head that seems to last for about a minute. Lacing is having trouble sticking. Smell is sweet with a slight skunkiness and a strange malt that resembles rubber. Taste is about the same as the weird smell...only a bit worse. Mouthfeel is watery and mildy sweet and sour that washes out during the finish. Drinkability...ok. Catfish on the label and perhaps catfish nuggets...in the beer.

Bottle shared courtesy of weeare138 (thanks!). Poured a medium and lightly hazy golden color with an averaged sized white head. What to say about this one. Aromas and tastes on the subtle side. Light lemon, and some other things going on there I couldn’t quite put my finger on. My ratings came down as I drank more and more of this one. Thin and watery body. Has a neat lable with a picture of a Catfish on it.

Poured a hazy golden color with a small white head that left very light lacing on the glass. Aroma of ash tray, burnt rubber, and faint citrus. Taste of citrus, light bitterness, with more burnt rubber.

slighly cloudy very pale gold with a solid layer of white head, aroma was a mixture of hops and something similar to cough syrup. pretty sweet, candi sugar is very present, hops actually backing that up. an odd blend, but not totally unenjoyable.

Leafy green hop nose with some grapefruit character. Clear copper-golden body is topped by low white head that recedes to ring. Fair bitterness. Grainy malts. Lasting impression of sweetness. Light body with moderate carbonation. Bottle sampled with muzzlehatch, Olivier_MTL and Rastacouere.

Hornpout No Limit Amber Ale
(22oz bottle) Purchased at Desrosiers in Freeport, Maine, on July 30th 2005. Pours a very large, almond-coloured head with a hazy, deep orange and well-carbonated body. Nose of tin, modeling glue and strong English malt. Seemingly has adapted some metallic contact into its flavour; mildly carbonated and milky, smooth malt. Sadly - this was a real disappointment - I believe the brewer needs to check his equipment to halt the metallic flavour and aroma.

(22oz bottle) Purchased at Desrosiers in Freepot, Maine, for US$3.09. Pour a friendly, foamy, white head with a pale orange body. Nose is somewhat tinny and hoppy. I enjoyed the basic flavours of oranges and grapefruit - yet this beer is not terribly complex. Average.

Hornpout Pale Ale
22 oz bottle shared with Olivier_MTL, Rastacouere and tiggmtl in a hotel room in Ann Arbor, MI. Nice head retention atop light amber body, rather clear...nose of Cascades, but rather old, tired and used up...fiarly dull, boring flavor and mouthfeel, featuring a wet front edging towards dryness, a bit of brown sugar, moderate hoppiness but no distinction whatsoever. Hmm, new brewery offering a really mediocre amber and pale to start with...how long will they last?

Hornpout No Limit Amber Ale
22 oz bottle from Vermont’s newest brewery, with minimal but striking catfish label. Pours with a full, lasting slightly off-white head atop a cloudy near-opaque dark amber body, unfiltered and bottle-conditioned....big malty, lightly smoky nose, toasted grains and PNW hops....flavor somewhat soapy, fairly dry for the style, light citrusy fruitiness in a rather thick body, with a touch of finishing bitterness...the soapy quality alas does not go away and overall this is rather a failure, though not totally without merit.
