Alengrin	3.7 De Ranke Hop Harvest 2023 Last year's Hop Harvest by these honorary pioneers of Belgian craft brewing 'avant la lettre', 75 cl bottle shared with Craftmember, Meeki and Goedele. Thick and rocky, egg-white, cobweb-lacing, stable head on a cloudy peach blonde beer with ochre tinge. Aroma of freshly cut dandelions, mugwort, unripe peach, tonic water, wormwood, bitterroot, mandarin, rusk, dry bread crust, clove, grapefruit peel, vague apricot. Fruity onset, hints of peach, green pear and light persimmon, dryish with medium carbonation, soft fluffy body; bread-pulp-like malts, soggy cereals with early and very powerful 'raw green' hop bitterness quickly dominating, long, rooty, tonic- and wormwood-like, very long, leafy and drying, severe even, yet remaining colourful and flavourful, with earthy notes lingering beyond. More rooty bitter and astringently hoppy even than what I remember from previous editions, but again delivering what it promises and completely in line with this brewery's three decades of history in brewing anti-sweet beers. Cheers Mark for the 2020 75cl bottle of this "undrinkable bitter' beer that sat in wood for 9 months to help make it even more "undrinkable bitter." Almost black in colour, off-white affair on top. It's a bit like sour vinegar with a drop of cheap red wine thrown in along with the dregs of an old Porter! Thursday, April 4, 2024

minutemat	2.5 De Ranke Back to Black 75cl bottle @ monthly tasting, Chez Sophie, April 24. Courtesy of Mark. Deep mahogany amber, small amount of off-white foam atop. Label says "Brewed to be un-drinkably bitter".. but it's certainly nowhere near as bitter as some De Ranke beers. In a blind taste id say it brings to mind a red wine barrel-aged old ale with plenty of dried dark fruits and perhaps a hint of proper old school porter about it, but no roast or much dark malt. tmoreau	3.7 De Ranke Simplex Draft at the Afterthought Brewing Co. taproom in Lombard, IL. as a .25L serving to house stemware, showing a clear, orangey/gold color, with a fluffy layer of white froth and a band of like suds as lacing. The nose was soft grain/Pils scent, some citrus & dried fruit, skins & slight rind, and subtle yeast spice. Medium bodied, the taste was similar notes, with decent carbonation, earthy & rind-like bitterness, and a somewhat parched quality to the finish. Crisp & clean. Monday, March 25, 2024

ozzatoadisback	3.5 De Ranke Franc Belge Pours a moderately hazy, slightly translucent amber, with a medium to big sized compact, pillowy white head that shows good retention and lacing. The aroma is quite subdued, with a light biscuity and caramel malts base followed by fruity hints (in the likes of citrus jam). Definitely more interesting and more intense in taste (still a mild, delicately flavoured beer): biscuity and caramel malts as per aroma, fruity notes are kind of overripe/jammy with orange, tangerine, maybe some red apple hints, slightest peppery spiciness, a herbal touch in the finish, the slightest hint of earthiness. Medium sweetness, low to medium bitterness. Slightest sweet edge in the mouth; balanced, dry enough clean finish. Light to medium bodied with medium to high carbonation (a quite delicate, small bubbled carbonation); feels pretty soft in the mouth for the low abv and still drinks very well. Overall a very nice, delicate beer; a good speciale belge example. Friday, February 23, 2024

Oakes	3.7 De Ranke Vieille Provision Amber, slight haze. No head. And the pour seems to have not much carbonation. Interesting aroma has a bit of phenol, touch of plastic and cleaner, but not a lot. There's more bugs than phenols. I'm feeling like this could go either way. On the palate, it's got some soft malts, and a light tartness. Seems lively, and balanced. Flavour is very buggy, with plenty of wet wood, wild yeast, a touch of oak, and very low-level acidity. Wet woody, oak, and gentle acidity.
