Ninkasi Brewing Company Reviews

OctoBrews
Ninkasi Total Domination IPA 4.8
This is my favourite IPA. Unfortunately, they donít sell it where I live, but Iíve had it in bottles many times, and even on tap across the street from the brewery. The name is the key. This is UBER hoppy. If you read that without thinking thatís a great thing, well, then this is not for you. Although, that said, Iíve converted a few unknowing Bud Light drinkers along the way, but just as many folks have been afraid of it. If I had to pick only one beer I could drink for the rest of my life, this would be it.

Ninkasi Hop Cooler Citrus IPA 3.8
Restrained citrus aroma in an amber pour. Lovely balance of hops and malt with a laid back bitter finish. Another dangerously delicious brew from the good folks at Ninkasi.

Ninkasi Hop Cooler Citrus IPA 3.7
Poured from 22 oz. bottle. Slightly hazy, golden amber with a 3-finger an off-white head and very good lacing. Aroma of bright citrus grapefruit, orange and tangerine) and a hint of pineapple. Taste of grapefruit, bitter hops, peach, pine and mango. Starts and finishes with a bitter grapefruit flavor. Medium body, a fine carbonation and a smooth, but slightly thin mouthfeel. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Ninkasi Helles Belles 2.8

Ninkasi Ground Control - Bourbon Barrel Aged 3.9
Stupid gimmick to make this solid but not exceptional impy stout overpriced in the first place. Iím glad I got to sample this as I canít imagine the BA price being less. Nice vanilla and fudge bourbons nose with a little roast and anise shining through. Good but not great overall - slight preference to this over the regular.

Ninkasi Easy Way IPA 3.7
Draught at Alibi Room, Vancouver
Hazy blond color. It has nice lemony hops, nice crackery malts, lean and dry mouthfeel without being too weak.
Excellent for the style.

Hazy dark blond color. Nice hoppy aroma, fruity, a bit resiny. Very good malt flavor, lean, some toffee, crackers, dry, and then a nice resiny hopping and citrus zest.
Lean, dry, and bitter with a lot of hop quality. Excellent.

Ninkasi Easy Way IPA 2.8
Straw. Light berryish, pearlike hop, thin body. Some bitterness but a thinner pale malt character. A bit too thin to be genuinely enjoyable.

Ninkasi Total Domination IPA 3.8
This is a great IPA. Balenced tropical and floral hops with lemony pineappley flavors. Lightly carbonated, thin but not in a bad way, not overly rounded, hits home right away. Awesome.

Ninkasi R&D Series: Tart & Soul 3.4
Bomber. Dairy aroma with notes of blackberries. Pours cloudy purple with a thin white head with poor retention and very little lacing. Starts with sour dairy flavors. Finishes smooth with sweet blackberry flavors as well as tart lacto notes. Pretty good sour, although it tastes more like a blackberry yogurt.

Koskela
Ninkasi Oktoberfest Festbier Lager 2.9
A slight sweet grain and citrusy hop aroma come from this hazy yellowy orangish brew with no head. Sweet grainy flavor and a smooth drink bring a medium body and slight bitter aftertaste.

Ninkasi Imperiale Imperial Stout 3.7
On tap at Alibi Room Vancouver. Tried back to back with Upright Imperial Stout. Dark. Sweet malted barley. Not as dark As other one. Perhaps needs some bitterness to balance. Over all good.

Ninkasi Velocihoptor Double IPA 3.4
Draft at RnH West. Pours dark reddish with a thick, creamy beige colored head. Heavy sweet malt aroma on top of some fruity hops. Hops come though more on the flavor, but itís still a very malt forward example of the style. Bitter on the finish. Fairly sticky mouthfeel. Decent, but not my preference when it comes to this style.

Ninkasi Hop Cooler Citrus IPA 3.1
Decent malt, with a sweet grapefruit on the nose. There is a lot of sweetness in this beer. A real perfumed fruit and a long pithy bitterness.

Ninkasi R&D Series: Tart & Soul 1.2
On tap. Gotta disagree w aj here - I got more barf than diaper, though there was a strong plastic note as well. The nose on this literally made my stomach and cornhole clench, and they didnít release for several minutes. If Actually rename this Barf & Plastic, but hats probably a hard sell. Flavor is better, but not by much. I can say with 99.9% certainty that this vile mess is the worst sour Iíve ever had.

Pershing
Ninkasi Easy Way IPA 3.1
Hazy yellow with a small head that disappears quickly. Aroma of sweet tropical citrus. Medium body with a fair amount of hop bitterness to match the style. Smooth on the palate. Refreshing finish with some lingering hop bitterness.

bhensonb
Ninkasi R&D Series: Tart & Soul 3.4
Bomber from Malt and Vine. Pours hazy and ruddy with a pink tinged head. Mixed aroma of blackberry and cheese. Med body or nearly. Flavor is blackberry and something a bit like goat cheese. Not bad, just strange. Very, very mildly sour. A bit more tart.

Bottle, big reddish pink beer, big pink head. Aroma cheese, kombucha, fruit. Taste is berries, vanilla, sour cream(?), but in a good way, somewhat sour, but enough sweet to balance. Palate is good, carbonation moderate.

Ninkasi R&D Series: Tart & Soul 3.9
Tap into a shaker showing watermelon red and sparse foam. The nose smells of cheese on the first impression and light notes of blackberries afterwards. The palate is light bodied and well carbonated. Light tartness with a perfect fruit forward intensity of blueberries on the palate. Wow, this is very well made.

ajnepple
Ninkasi R&D Series: Tart & Soul 1.2
22 oz bottle from Bullfrog Wine & Spirits. Juicy reddish pinkish purplish appearance with a white head. Infected aroma of stinky cheese, dirty diaper and light barf. Similar flavor, a little fruity, lightly tart, thin, light bodied, under carbonated and clearly infected with what seems to be butyric or isovaleric acid. Unfortunate offering, an absolute drain pour.

Gerbeer
Ninkasi Easy Way IPA 2.8
On tap. Pours a clear dark gold with light head. Aromas of grassy hops and bread crusts. Flavors of soapy fruit, grain light pine and toasted malts. Just a money grab. There are so many better...

Ninkasi Critical Hit Barley Wine 3.4
Still donít know quite what to think of this one, but bottom line was, I didnít finish it. The nose is fantastic, classic malty barleywine with some age on it, leather, berries, bread. Hops as it opens. Flavor starts nice, then BAM - my tongue tries to recede into the roof of my mouth as the ridiculous amount of puckering bitterness hits me in the finish. As much as I tried to get past that, I could not. Such a shame, as after the first whiff, I was ready for a classic. But...too abrasive for itís own good.

Ninkasi Velocihoptor Double IPA 3.8
Bottle from Albertsons. Crafted by Boiseís own Jake Schisl. Deep, clear amber pour with beige creamy head. Looks rich. Smells OK, but gets much better in the taste, equal parts hops and toffee/caramel. Slight warmth at the finish, creamy body, all makes for a nice smooth drinker.

mcberko
Ninkasi Beer Run IPA 3.4
On tap at the Alibi Room, pours a clear golden with a small white head. Aroma is fairy restrained, with gentle citrus hops. Flavour is hoppy, but without much character, showcasing citrusy hops upfront, with a little pine, and dry biscuity malt. Still, well-done for what it is, as generic as it is.

mcberko
Ninkasi Easy Way IPA 3.1
On tap at the Alibi Room, pours a clear blonde with a small white head. Aroma is dry, with notes of earthy citrus hops and dry biscuity malt. Flavour is well-balanced, bringing out spicy citrus and earthy hops, followed by a bone dry biscuity malt backbone. Nicely balanced, with no metallic notes. Decent but nothing special.

Draught pint at House of Shields, San Francisco on 15-Mar-2016. Clear amber colour with a thin white head. Medium body with light carbonation. Light hop bitterness. Lots if fruit with light hop bitterness. The heavy sweetness of the tropical fruit overwhelms this beer.

Ninkasi Hop Cooler Citrus IPA 3.5
22 oz. bottle. It pours a clear golden color with an off white head. Some small particles floating around that Iím guessing comes from the fruit used in the process. The aroma is full with fresh citrusy grapefruit, orange and tangerine. Some biscuity/toasted malt in the background. Very fruity. The flavor is the same. Lots of orange and sweet grapefruit. Some sweeter maltiness and a hint of herbal, spicy bitterness. Medium to full bodied with good texture and carbonation. Pretty solid if not exciting.

Ninkasi Hop Cooler Citrus IPA 2
Pours a clear orange golden color with white head. Itís almost like a fake citrus smell from a fragrance, but this doesnít smell right to me, very fake; tastes like it to. Medium bodied. Ninkasi missed the boat on this one.

Kobold
Ninkasi Dawn of the Red India Red Ale 4.3
Appearance: bleached slice of wormwood cut from a fallen cloud floats atop an eerily transparent orange pekoe body refusing to remain in a single spectral category. Aroma: a verdant green branch oozing luscious sunny, sticky sap swung by a juice stained peddler of grapefruits. disturbed by our intrusion, his cart tips over spilling caramelized peaches and a mosaic of nearly ripe, ripe and exceedingly ripe strawberries. Taste: felt coated mandarin oranges instantly dissolve into grapefruit skins which clothe an ever undressing crowd of dark, friendly lemons. toasty brown sugar malts lurk almost unseen among the Edenic cornucopia of citrus, fruity hops. Palate: prickliness quickly taken over by a soft thickness finishing as bright airiness in the south of the tongue. Overall: this beer drops fruit, both exotic and citrus, from pine limbs as if it were rain nourishing a parched earth. the malts are subtle, never cloying as in some red ales, and yet play an indispensable part in the song.

Ninkasi Hop Cooler Citrus IPA 3.5
Slightly hazy medium yellow with a rocky white head. Citrusy aroma. The initial taste is fairly bitter, but more of a citrus pith bitterness rather than a juicy citrus bitterness. The taste that follows actually seems more piney, so this doesnít quite seem like a citrus IPA. The overall effect is that taste is a bit muddled. Having said that, the beer is tasty and the bitterness is somewhat bracing but also refreshing at the same time. Thereís a pineapple and slight toffee sweetness to offset the bitterness, but in the end the bitterness covers your tongue and sticks to it. Happy beer day everyone!
