Hmm, my notes say "oak farm midlife crisis". Dark, nice tight dark head. Slightly woody aroma. Dry, a bit nutty and marmite/yeasty. Refreshing palate. Nice dry finish. Honey. Past its BB and shows it. Sorry brewer - blame Chris!

Bottled. A deep red beer with a tan head. The aroma has notes of malt, oxidation, and metal. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt, metal, and oxidation, leading to a dry oxidized finish.

A Mes rate: cask at the Harlequin.
Bright gold with a bubbly white collar. Good fruity hop nose but some diacetyl in the background holds it back a bit. Very peaty and earthy in the mouth. Dull citric finish. Really that’s it. Yet another run of the mill blonde.

Pours hazy yellow-golden with a small, bubbly, white head. Aroma is grainy, light vegetable and some thyme. Low carbonation and a super-nice oily mouthfeel. Flavour is well bitter, good pine, some fruity apricot and lemony zest. Very drinkable, shame about the aroma.

Flavour are soapy citrus with floral notes. Dry biscuit malts with sugar. Seemed like a kit homebrew beer. Probably not in the best condition.

Cask@St Albans BF 06. Quite sweet and caramelly, subtle notes of mollasses. Some green apple and some light sulfuric eggyness, which suggests it wasn’t quite as fresh/ready as it could have been. Some cereally and nutty malt notes also noticed. Tasted quite OK in the end though.

Cask (gravity dispense) at St Albans Beer Festival, September 2006. A very dark bitter - deep chestnut colour. Slightly bready malt aroma. Quite bitter on the palate with cooking chocolate and some sharp berry fruit. There’s a distinctly sour pickup on the finish. Treads the line between a bitter and an old ale, almost straying into traditional porter territory too. Whatever category it belongs in, I thought this was a very interesting beer and a promising early offering form a fairly new brewery.

Bull Box Bitter
Cask (gravity dispense), Cambridge Beer Festival, May 2006. A promising start from a new brewery. A solid amber/copper coloured bitter with a decent balance of light dry malt and earthy hop bitterness. Well made and satisfying.
RE-RATE. Bottle @ pre-GBBF shindig, August 2009. BBE January 2009.Quite a dark bitter. Soft mouthfeel. Easygoing but short of bite. Fairly standard UK style bottled ordinary bitter - that is better from cask than bottle. But, as bottled bitters go, this wasn’t a bad one. [6/3/6/3/12 = 3.0]
Original score retained.

Cask conditioned - gravity dispense - Cambridge BF. An amber brown coloured beer. The aroma is fruity with some good solid hop character. The taste has good bitterness and a good thick quaffable body. A very pleasant English bitter with good traditional hoppiness making it stand out from some of the sickly Summer English goldens.
