Ale Asylum Rictus Grin Belgian-style Pale Ale
Bottle: Cloudy, amber-gold with a small, off-white head. Yeasty, soft fruit, grain malt aroma. Taste is sweet...very soft....slightly spicy grain malt, yeast. Lightly fruity....pear, a trace of sweet lemon. Mild....nice... Very cool and amusing label art.

Ale Asylum Rictus Grin Belgian-style Pale Ale
Draught pint at OíRiley & Conways Irish Pub in Janesville, WI, today. Pours amber-bronze with a smallish but lasting snowy cap, a bit of flecking in the glass as it and the liquid recedes...aroma pungenty, bready-yeasty, and as I dig deeper, a bit lactic and...alas...buttery. Infected? Quite possibly; itís been a long time since Iíve had an off beer anywhere so I frankly donít know what to make of it. On the tongue itís again somewhat sour/lactic, with an apple acidity & fruitiness coming on midpalate, and a slightly drier finishing bitterness. Full-bodied, not too syrupy. I suspect this was off but the three other beers Iíve had here, today and on a previous visit, were all fine; also Iíve had issues with some of Ale Asylumís other Belgian-style offerings before, not necessarily infections but...weirdness. So I donít know; Iíll rate it as is, and hopefully get a bottle soon and see if the problems hold up.

Ale Asylum Demento Session Pale Ale
Bottle pour - cloudy light gold - thick head that gives way quickly - soapy lacing. Aroma is mildly sweet with citrus hops dancing throughout - definitely picking up some pineapple and lemon. Flavor is sweet up front before turning bitter with the citrus hops at the forefront again. Easy drinking, as one would expect from the style - some lively carbonation. Pretty solid brew!

Orange. Yeasty Belgian nose with citrus and fruit. Phenolic. Flavor is more yeast, citrus, and a light cidery apple note that seems to pop up in Ale Asylum Belgians. Light herbal hopping.

Slightly hazed light amber color. Tall, lasting canvas colored head. Iím not sure if the fact that Iím doing laundry has anything to do with it, but Iím sure smelling animal piss (sorry, to be graphic, but I got to call it as I smell it), grapefruit zest and light caramel. Very heavy lace. Things do seem to settle down a touch and the green hops overtake the petís tinkle tract tendencies. Smooth lightly oily feel that seems a touch lifeless by the time it reaches the back of the throat. Light fruit sweetness in the front, with peaches and melon. Mild spiciness in the middle. Finish has some herbal hops and some cloves from the yeast. An interesting brew 5/10

Bottle - Amber pour with a white head thatís gone in no time. Nose has some plastic, a little spicing, and some nutty, sweet malt. Taste is similar--the plastic is gone, but thereís a weird peanut nuttiness, Belgian yeast, sweet honeyed malt, and a touch of herbal, fruity hopping on the finish. This is not my jam.

Big bouquet of grapefruit, passionfruit and a few more fruit not indigenous to lovely Madison, WI. After the aroma, though, itís very similar to other Ale Asylum IPAs: thick, chewy and bitter. Very good but doesnít strike my taste buds as the least bit sessionable. Enjoyed on tap.

Bottled. Very hazy two-toned yellow/orange with a massive, frothy egg-white head. Zesty citrus aroma (grapefruit flesh, orange zest) with moderate pine and a vanilla cookie end. Mellow hop flavor, still heavy with grapefruit, but with a slight peach/nectarine sweetness to the middle. Pillowy mouthfeel is fantastic. I really enjoyed.

Had it out of a bomber from Caponeís Liquors, a great spot in ChiTown. Pours a cloudy orange hue with fat white foamy head (the kind you find at a Super 8). Strong straight up IPA aroma with a hint of malt. Taste smooth IPA flavorings with an underlying strength of Imma gonna fuch you up ABV. Just Sayin.

Fruit on the aroma, which I suppose is grapes. Lots of fruit in the taste, which again seems like grapes and tropical fruit, with a nice malt backbone and an also nicely-balanced hops bitterness. Not a great IPA, but pretty good.

Bottle - Deep golden pour with a filmy off-white head. Nose is dank and sticky hops with onion and garlic notes, mango, and some light spiciness. Taste is the same--pretty dry pale malt base with dank and citrus hops. Oily and slick, medium-bodied, with some biting carbonation. Decent, but the hops actually feel a bit overdone. Just a little too over-the-top.

May I suggest that seven malts may be too many for a brown ale? Besides a bit of caramel in the aroma, there was little more to show for the malt investment. This ale isnít particularly sweet, nutty or creamy. Pleasant enough, but thatís about it. Had from a tap.
