Ale Asylum Pantheon Imperial Brown Ale 3.7
Bottle: Cola-coloured, with a small beige head. Brown sugar, earthy caramel malt scent. Caramel malt, chocolate, brown sugar.....a little booze in the flavour. Heavy, almost sticky body....really rich....and good.

Ale Asylum Satisfaction Jacksin 3.3
Bottle from Galesburg Hy-Vee. Big, malty beer. Fruits and caramel flavors. It’s big and bold, but the malty sweetness seems a little heavy to me. Not one of my favorite AA beers.

Ale Asylum Hopalicious 3.5
Eleven separate additions of cascade hops give this American pale ale its lush citrus aroma and bold hop flavor without crazy bitterness.

Ale Asylum Velveteen Habit 3.7
1/11/16 Chicago (16 oz draft pour at Finley Dunnes into standard pint glass). Copper brown pour, minimal head and carbonation. Pleasant aroma of citrus, hops, and pine. Thin texture, easy and enjoyable beer to drink. Hops and citrus taste. Very good beer. I’m glad Joe offered me a taste pour, and I gladly ordered a second after finishing my first pint. Will be looking for more Ale Asylum offerings based on this offering, my first from this brewer.

Ale Asylum Ünshadowed 3.5
Bottle pour - cloudy straw body - medium white head that recedes quickly - light lacing. Aroma is very well done - lots of banana and clove...yeasty, bit of bubble gum - very very good. I must say, reminded a bit of the Dancing Man, which stands by itself for the style in my mind. Flavor is okay...borders on good...just doesn’t stand up to the nose. Bready and yeasty, it just doesn’t really do a whole lot. Palate is similarly a bit thin - must admit that I was a bit shocked to see the ABV - doesn’t come through in any way. Good overall drink that I’d have again...maybe I can just smell a friend’s!

Ale Asylum Ambergeddon 3.5
Aroma - caramel malt, with stone fruit, and some mild citrus. Appearance - burnt orange body color, with fine sediment. The head is off-white and about 1 1/2". the head is frothy and settles very slowly. Taste - caramel malt, with interestingly subdued Pacific Northwest hops. Superb balance. Stonefruits and some light grapefruit. Palate - light body, thin feel, flat carbonation, and abrupt fruity finish.

Ale Asylum Hopalicious 3.6
Bottle pour, though I’ve had this on tap at brewery before. Medium gold color - one finger white head that recedes quickly...little lacing. Aroma is citrusy - orange in particular...hint of resin - not overpowering, and quite enjoyable. Flavor is generally citrus hops...very mild bitterness (so bonus point as I see this was the brewer’s goal). Palate is medium bodied - seems appropriate for the drink. Could session this pretty easily. Nice offering - wont’ overwhelm you, but easy go-to beer that I’ll definitely enjoy again.

Ale Asylum Satisfaction Jacksin 2.9
Cliche, but this was fantastic when it came out and is a shadow of its old self now. Rated from tap at Troll Fest. Lemony, oily, pine sol hop tones. Thick caramel balance. Not anything I want in the style. Antiquated, not good.

Ale Asylum Satisfaction Jacksin 4.5
Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Big citrus aroma, murky golden brown color small white head. The aroma is hops with some pine and citrus tossed in. The taste matches the aroma and is very good

Ale Asylum Demento Session Pale Ale 3.1
Bottle: It poured a clear gold with a white head. Aroma of pine, citrus and some floral notes.

Ale Asylum Ambergeddon 1.9
12 oz bottle with a date code 00-23-2015. Not sure if that’s the date it was bottled or an enjoy by date. Either way, this is oxidized as hell. All cardboard and the caramel sweetness of hop death. Not enjoyable.

Ale Asylum Demento Session Pale Ale 2.2
Bottle. Certainly not one of their best. Nose is rich and creamy with floor cleaner added. WTF???? The aroma of ammonia is unmistakable in this and drags the overall score down something fierce! Mouth-feel is very watery, a bit soapy, and aftertaste is too quick and almost nonexistent. Zero malt presence Very, very dry which I normally would like if there was some flavor. There isn’t. Except for pee.

Ale Asylum Ünshadowed 3.1
12 ounce bottle. A white fluffy head has good retention and leaves thick lacing. Some clouds in this white golden beer. Cloves and gentle fruit with banana. Wheat notes. Very light fare.

Ale Asylum Demento Session Pale Ale 2.6
12 oz bottle, which must be a bit old, because this most certainly is not a mid-90s beer. When I popped the cap, my first thought was "WTF? That smells like piss" - plenty of ammonia-like right then. Not now, however, now it’s just lemony. Taste is soapy, with some lemon sour and citrus rind hops. Almost not malt at all, super dry. It’s not terrible, but it is far from good.

Ale Asylum Kink 3.3
Pours a hazy copper with an off white head and good lacing. Aroma is malty with caramel and fruit. Taste is similiar to nose with caramel, fruit and some spiciness. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Solid belgian style beer.
Friday, December 04, 2015

Ale Asylum Madtown Nutbrown 3.2
Pours chestnut brown with aroma of nuts, caramel, and chocolate. Nutty flavor with some toffee sweetness and chocolate. A bit underdeveloped, but nice nonetheless.

Ale Asylum Demento Session Pale Ale 3.6
12 oz. bottle poured to a small Czech-pils glass at home, displaying a clear & bright, mid-golden hue, with a fluffy layer of soft white head foam, and wavy lacing that turned into clingy patches of foam on the glass. The nose was pleasant malt sweetness, perfumey grapefruit, a bit of pineapple, some resin, and a light grain/graham cracker scent to the malt. Light to medium bodied, with average carbonation, the taste contributed a moderate, earthy & citrusy bitterness, with slight resin & rind. The texture lightened a bit, but successfully retained the lingering "C" hop experience, and finished slightly dry. Very drinkable.

Ale Asylum Big Slick 3.5
Bottle. Black with tan head. Coffee malt aroma. It had an oily mouth feel and a balanced finish.

Ale Asylum Bedlam! 3
Can, pours a cloudy bright golden orange with a small white head. Aroma brings out a decent mix of dank hops and Belgian yeast. Flavour is similar, with Belgian yeast, dank hops, and earthy dryness. Not overly complex but it works decently enough. Okay.

Ale Asylum Big Slick 3.8
Bottle from Brunos via lake beer fridge....but consumed in Chicago. Pours almost black into a 22 oz snifter....nice taupe head that quickly fades...minimal lacing. Nose is of my favorites so I’m kinda hooked right off. A little anise in the initial mouth...just a bit. Very there as well. Sweet...bit more coffee / anise....lingers too. Very tasty...will do another...later.

Ale Asylum Demento Session Pale Ale 3.8
Bottle, thanks George999! Lemony citrus hop aroma with light notes of grapefruit and pine. Pours cloudy golden colored with a thin white head with good retention and some lacing. Starts with bright lemony citrus and acidity. Finishes very smooth with some mild pine and grapefruit hop bitterness, but not much to speak of before coating the palate in the lemony citrus. Good, sessionable pale that is refreshing and highly drinkable.

Ale Asylum Velveteen Habit 3.6
One of the better ipas from Ale asylum, great floral hop aroma. Copper colored, creamy, citrusy, and floral flavor. Good malt body balances with sweetness. Hop linger for a while after finishing, nice surprise. Habit forming

Ale Asylum Ambergeddon 2.6
12oz bottle, thanks to phaleslu/shrubber85. Dated 9-10-2105. Hazy red amber orange color. Thin khaki head. Decent retention and good ridge of lace. Spicy, kind of earthy, but stale hop. Some toasty malt, mild caramel. Moderate to bigger bitter taste, kind of astringent. Medium to bigger body. Kind of slick texture. Lighter kind of crisp carbonation, mild roughness to it. Tastes a bit older for sure. Seems like this was once an impressively hoppy & big amber, but right now it just tastes stale and rough. Didn’t finish.

Ale Asylum Madtown Nutbrown 4
Bottle, thanks George999! Rich, nutty aroma with sweet caramel notes. Pours dark caramel brown with a thin tan head with poor retention and some lacing. Starts with rich nutty flavors with a bit toffee. Finishes smooth with excellent caramel sweetness permeating the other flavors nicely. Excellent brown ale!

Ale Asylum Ünshadowed 3.5
Good drinkable hefe. Lots of foaming head, and lasting head. Fresh smell. Soft mouthfeel. On the mark.

Ale Asylum Velveteen Habit 3.6
12 ounce bottle
A solid offering fro Ale Asylum tips the scales in favor of a detour from the airport if you manage to have the time. Taking a different approach to the IPA, it manages to leave an impression that lasts long beyond the final sip.

Aroma / Appearance - A bubbly bronze core shimmers with the company of a frosty vanilla head. Orange groves shrouded in a morning mist fill the air with inviting depth. Bright but balanced, the creamsicle undertones stick around.

Flavor / Palate - Creamsicle and vanilla crawl into every corner of the throat. Mellow hops drive home a soft finish that is smooth and resiny. Refreshing bitterness carries this release from start to finish. Once again Ale Aslyum shows off its prowess as a regional master.

Ale Asylum Madtown Nutbrown 2.1
12oz bottle, thanks to shrubber85/phaleslu. Dated 12/10/2015. Red / brown color, with lots of yeasty chunks in the body. Thin off-white head. Fades to a minimal ring. Dark fruit up front. Caramel malt, very mild nuttiness. Touch of papery oxidization. Touch of chocolate. Moderate bitter taste, lighter to moderate sweet. Bit of a bite to it. Just a touch of tart. Mild drying finish. Medium-plus body. Lighter carbonation. Hint of coffee comes out later. Seems a little rough and off though. Didn’t finish.

Ale Asylum Big Slick 4
Bottle shared by my friend John. Pours near black with a thick tan head and a strong treacle aroma. There is a hearty dark molasses flavor with hint of coffee and a smooth anise finish.

Ale Asylum Big Slick 3.9
Bottle shared by john. Pours black with white head. Taste is roasted malts with lots of coffee

Ale Asylum Ballistic IPA 3.4
This is nearly a DIPA with it’s fairly heavy body and too-obvious ABV. Super-murky medium-dark copper color with a pretty big white head. Aroma to my fairly stuffy nose is booze. Taste is citrus rind, some pine resin and a pretty serious malt background. The ABV being so obvious is too much for my taste. It’s definitely good, but not a fave.

Ale Asylum Tripel Nova 3
Seriously, this one was just meh. It looked nice and had a bit of nice notes and flavors -- mostly yeast and light fruit. But it tasted more like a tarted up ale. I was expecting something a bit more, maybe chewy, thicker, more flavor.

Ale Asylum Satisfaction Jacksin 4.1
Poured from the bottle of the six pack lots of nice hops in here, this stuff goes down fast with sticky fruit, doesn’t taste like a plus 8%, really good.

Ale Asylum Ünshadowed 2.5
From a can, pours a hazy dull, pale yellow with a head that quickly fizzed out. The smell is clove, wheat, yeast banana and bubblegum. The taste follows the smell ending very dry . Light with prickly carbonation. Meh...

October 17, 2015 - sample via bottle at Barrels and Bacon. Orange pour with limited head. Piney bitter and sweet malt aroma and taste.

Ale Asylum Ballistic IPA 3.9
Poured from the 6 pack of bottles cloudy orange with a 2 finger white collar, this is very easy drinking with some smooth hops and some bitter, nice 7+ alcohol, was gone fast.

Ale Asylum Hopalicious 3
An average pale ale that is heavily hopped. Nothing special. But at the same time still drinkable.

Ale Asylum Demento Session Pale Ale 3
Bottle:   Straw, touch of orange, milky haze, large foamy white head, fairly nice lacing.   Light piney aroma, not too bright tho.   Faint powdery sweetness.   Oddly enough, not all that bitter... in fact, its about as bitter as a east coast Pale Ale, to be expected I guess.   Body and mouthfeel are average.   Soft powdery sweet finish.   Its more candyish than beer.   And by no means is it all that sweet, its just that smidgen of powdered sugar on the finish that sums it up.   Almost too light to be a Session IPA.   Clean at least, but not all that interesting.   Dare to say comes across as a bit underwhelming.

Ale Asylum Pilot Batch 002 3.7
8 oz. pour, on tap at the brewery’s taproom in Madison, Wisconsin. Consumed on 10-3-15. Hazy, light to medium brown. Pleasant aroma. Caramel scent and flavor. Quite good. Hoppy and malty. Malty for an IPA but good, bitter, herbal pine as well. Lively in the palate. Medium to full body. I’m impressed!

Ale Asylum Pilot Batch 004 3.7
8 oz. pour, on tap at the brewery’s taproom in Madison, Wisconsin. Consumed on 10-3-15. Pours a lightly hazy, mostly clear bronze with a small amount of beige head. Dry, piney, herbal aroma. Nice, herbal, bitter pine needle flavor. Also golden raisin. Lively in the palate. Medium body. Very good and really nice.

Ale Asylum Diablo Belga 3.1
12 oz. bottle from shrubber85 - thanks again, Roger! Bottle dated best by 3/24/16. Pours a deep but clear mahogany with a small khaki head that lasts as a sloppy ring and uneven, bubbly film. Aroma of sweet cookie, brown and toasted sugar, caramel, toast, dead leaves, figs, dates, raisins, biscuit, and a woody, earthy note. Flavor of dead leaves, cookie, fruitcake, toasted sugar, caramel, candied nuts, figs, raisins, dates, and earth. Pretty light bodied, actually, with moderate to medium carbonation and a dry, sweet, earthy mouthfeel. DrSilverworm sure hated this one. It’s not bad. It’s a bit too sweet, but it’s dry and earthy and relatively easy sipping for the style. I wouldn’t want a pint, but a few ounces makes for a decent serving.

Ale Asylum Demento Session Pale Ale 2.7
12 oz. bottle from shrubber85 - thanks again, Roger! Bottled 9/16/15, nice and fresh. Pours a clear gold with a small white head that forms a spotty film and ring while lacing the glass. The aroma is a bit harsh - ammonia? - like pine and florals and paint stripper. The initial flavor has some of that character, too, like the glass was washed with ammonia. That gives way to notes of tea and pale and sweet malts and light citrus. Light-bodied, with low carbonation. What is that in there? Phenols? Acetone? I lean toward ammonia, which is a shame, because it seems like there’s an otherwise simple, satisfying session IPA in here.

Taste is similar to the nose, hops are present but slightly subdued. Big maltiness. Caramel, toffee, toast, cocoa, Graham cracker. Slight biterness with a piney grapefruit hint. Well attenuated and dry finish. Medium body. Excellent.
