Brakspear Oxford Gold (Bottle) 3
Working my way through the aldi ale section. This has been the best yet. Couldn’t get much aroma from it, good fruity flavour with a bitter finish. Pretty good one from Marston.

Brakspear Bitter (Bottle) 3.5
0.5 l bottle from Stockman, Helsinki. Clear amber colour, well looks like a bitter. Taste is also typical of bitters but with some additional dryness, not just bitterness. Even the bottle version has something I can’t quite pinpoint. Not at all watery as some of the bitters below 4% ABV are. I hope I can taste someday the cask version.

500ml bottle - thanks Marduk!
Sweet twiggy bitter. Sweet taste, some mushrooms. Very simple bitter, but I can’t fault it except for lack of excitement. Finish sweet and mushroomy. Its extremely sessionable strength makes it quite impressive. Drinkability decent enough.

Brakspear Bitter (Bottle) 3.4
500ml bottle (K-supermarket Sello, Espoo). Clear amber color. Medium size, beige head, stays. Malty, metallic hops, sweetish, wet hops in aroma. Sweet, wet hops, bit papery in taste. Nice mellow sweet bitterness and sweet malts in aftertaste. Almost no carbonation. Mellow and pleasant in mouth. Quite drinkable brew.

Butelka 500ml. Miedziany gleboki kolor z mala biala piana. W zapachu dominuje chmiel orzechy rodzynki. W smaku chmielowe ale nie gorzkie - czuc slody. Chlebowo tostowy posmak rodzynki orzechy ale takze "ziemisty" finisz. Dobre

April, 2009. Oxford Gold Good initial hop bite, tasty orange hued malt. Good condition. This is a tasty Brakspear bitter - nothing exceptional, but nicely done - quite dry, refreshing, well made and tasty. Does the job. [3.3]
Jan, 2015 Pleasant beer. Clean and sweet with some delicate integrated hops. A good best bitter, nicely straddling the gap between a session and a premium bitter. Very drinkable. [3.0]

*Old rating. Best before 30 Sep 2011. The beer is malty bitter. Nice typical Ale-characteristics. Malts with hints of nuts and nice and fresh. Malty fresh aftertaste. Nice but not too deep.

Brakspear Bitter (Bottle) 2.7
Bottle. Pours a clear pale amber colour with a thin white head. Aroma of caramel, slight toasted malts, subtle nuts and spicy, earthy hops. Taste of toasted malts, some caramel, slight mineral and spicy, earthy hops. Light bodied and soft carbonation. A short, minerally, earthy hop bitterness in the finish. It’s not that thin for 3.4 but then again it’s not that flavourful either. A typical malty bitter but with a minerally bitterness in the finish.

Brakspear Old Ale 3.2
It must be 20 years since I’ve had a pint of this. Paler than I remember and perhaps a little thinner, it still has a pleasant aroma of caramel and a likeable enough malty palate. But despite being highly rated in its day, it doesn’t really hit the true heights now. OK, it’s been through the mill and is presently brewed at a home brew pub rather than the picturesque old brewery in the middle of Henley so perhaps comparisons are futile. Or perhaps we just expect a little more of our ales nowadays?

50 cl bottle. Pale amber colour, thin white head, not much carbonation. Subdued aroma of white bread, grass and hay. Medium mouthfeel, some bittering at the back. Flavour is sweet and biscuity, very restrained honey notes. Generic, mass-produced bitter that’s not very bitter.

Brakspear Ninety Nine 2.1
Backlog. From cask at The Granite City, Aberdeen Airport, 04.08.12. Very pale and slightly unclear. Strong citrusy aroma. Lemon and lime, and more lemon and lime. Too much American hops for an ale. Tastes, smells and looks like limejuice. Aftertaste of lime. No hint of maltiness. Some bitterness, but citrus is overwhelming.

Brakspear Triple III 3.6
Bottled, 500ml from Waitrose in Cirencester, Gloucs. Dark amber to copper with off white head. This started with a rich, nutty, malty character, quite roasty and full to the palate. The hops are earthy, leafy and reasonably bittering with an autumnal feel, pleasant leaf litter feel. There is a raisin and rum note, pleasant alcohol hints. I enjoyed this one.

Minimal head on pouring over a dark amber beer. Quite a dry hop flavour ao be warned if you don’t like the strength of flavour that brings. A slight tang of liquorice persists too.
