Cask at High Wycombe cricket club, 25/06/16. Golden orange with a decent egg shell white head. Nose is biscuit, light hop strains, bitter fruit esters, a touch of twig. Taste comprises biscuit malt, straw, earthy, brown bread, faint orange. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, semi drying close with a light bitter edge. Ok bitter.

Brakspear Bitter (Cask)
Cask at the The Crabtree, Frimley. 20/06/16. Dark amber with a lovely creamy head. However thatís the best of it. Zero aroma - only got points as it wasnít minging. Zero taste as well. Sweet with the vaguest hint of bitterness. But the texture matches its appearance - creamy. Looka nice but completely uninteresting.

Brakspear Mild Ale
Cask at the Bull, Bell Street, Henley. Back in production, and being brewed at the Bell Street Brewery at the back of the Bull. An attractive tawny brown pour with a cherry red gleam and tight cream head; aroma of toast; thin at first with a fruity sweetness, then some soft oaty grains add body; the finish is dry with lingering licorice. A proper old-fashioned mild.

Bottle split at Level 42, thanks to Fergus, 24/05/16. Lightly hazed orange amber with a moderate off white covering. Nose is varnish, spice, tarte fruit esters, sharp bitter notes, not overly pleasant. Taste comprises caramel, fruit loaf, less of the sharp and bitter, dates, Xmas cake. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. So so ... nose lets this down a few points.

Old bottle thanks to Fergus at level 42. It pours murky deep brown with a thick Biere head. The aroma is earthy, dirty, brown bread, nail varnish remover, candy, melon, old musty apple and candy. The taste is earthy, musty, old dirty apple, earth, damp leaves, alcohol, pear drops, barnyard and wet cardboard with a dry, musty finish. Medium body and foamy carbonation. Pretty knackered.

500ml bottle in mixed selection box from Waitrose. Aroma bready with subtle malts. Taste heavily bitter, with slightly piney hops. Tastes stronger than the ABV would suggest. Solid but not particularly distinctive.

Brakspear Bitter (Bottle)
0.5 l bottle from Stockman, Helsinki. Clear amber colour, well looks like a bitter. Taste is also typical of bitters but with some additional dryness, not just bitterness. Even the bottle version has something I canít quite pinpoint. Not at all watery as some of the bitters below 4% ABV are. I hope I can taste someday the cask version.

Sweet twiggy bitter. Sweet taste, some mushrooms. Very simple bitter, but I canít fault it except for lack of excitement. Finish sweet and mushroomy. Its extremely sessionable strength makes it quite impressive. Drinkability decent enough.

April, 2009. Oxford Gold Good initial hop bite, tasty orange hued malt. Good condition. This is a tasty Brakspear bitter - nothing exceptional, but nicely done - quite dry, refreshing, well made and tasty. Does the job. [3.3]
Jan, 2015 Pleasant beer. Clean and sweet with some delicate integrated hops. A good best bitter, nicely straddling the gap between a session and a premium bitter. Very drinkable. [3.0]

Brakspear Bitter (Bottle)
Bottle. Pours a clear pale amber colour with a thin white head. Aroma of caramel, slight toasted malts, subtle nuts and spicy, earthy hops. Taste of toasted malts, some caramel, slight mineral and spicy, earthy hops. Light bodied and soft carbonation. A short, minerally, earthy hop bitterness in the finish. Itís not that thin for 3.4 but then again itís not that flavourful either. A typical malty bitter but with a minerally bitterness in the finish.

Brakspear Old Ale
It must be 20 years since Iíve had a pint of this. Paler than I remember and perhaps a little thinner, it still has a pleasant aroma of caramel and a likeable enough malty palate. But despite being highly rated in its day, it doesnít really hit the true heights now. OK, itís been through the mill and is presently brewed at a home brew pub rather than the picturesque old brewery in the middle of Henley so perhaps comparisons are futile. Or perhaps we just expect a little more of our ales nowadays?

Backlog. From cask at The Granite City, Aberdeen Airport, 04.08.12. Very pale and slightly unclear. Strong citrusy aroma. Lemon and lime, and more lemon and lime. Too much American hops for an ale. Tastes, smells and looks like limejuice. Aftertaste of lime. No hint of maltiness. Some bitterness, but citrus is overwhelming.

Bottled, 500ml from Waitrose in Cirencester, Gloucs. Dark amber to copper with off white head. This started with a rich, nutty, malty character, quite roasty and full to the palate. The hops are earthy, leafy and reasonably bittering with an autumnal feel, pleasant leaf litter feel. There is a raisin and rum note, pleasant alcohol hints. I enjoyed this one.
