On tap at Legend Beer Brewhouse, pours black with a small beige head. Aroma brings out crunchy herbal notes, toasted bready malt, and skunky vegetal notes. Flavour is along the same lines, with toasted nuts, some herbal notes and crunchy vegetables. Way too vegetal and somewhat stale. Drinkable.

On tap at Legend Beer, pours a cloudy golden orange with a medium white head. Aroma brings out notes of straw and light bready malt. Flavour is similar, with notes of grass, straw and crisp biscuity malt. Clean and refreshing, but nothing special.

Legend Beer Lager
Notes from 2015. Draft at the Coffee House Restaurant, Hanoi. Have to go against the grain on this one. Enjoyed many a pint of this one over time. Sunny medium gold body that is bright and alive with a tight, streaming carbonation.. Two inches of rocky foam atop holds and needs its bitter goodness chewed off before imbibing. Peppery, minty and earthy Noble hop nose balanced by a clean, toasted malt profile. Solid malt on the palate; quite firm whilst still being delicate with the lively carbonation seeing it bounce across the palate. Good malt meets good hop and after the first sip it is all one melded and flavoursome lager. Hoppy, bitter and earthy; I’d say a mixture of Czech and German Nobles (?). Ends crisp with plenty going on before and after the scenes. Very nice drinking and a surprisingly good Vietnam staple! (5 Dinh Tien Hoang, Hanoi, Vietnam)

Notes from 2015.
Draft at the Coffee House Restaurant, Hanoi.
Cola brown and opaque asides a glimmer of light in the very shallows. Proud and resilient off-white foam laces well. Smoke, earth, tar and molasses on the nose - another high point but it was down hill from there. Buttery but lean on the palate. Sticky roasted malt jars and is like pure burnt treacle and blackstrap. Carbonation is light and spritzy. Woody with a touch of ash and smoke in the linger to try to bring it back. Not off-putting just off-balanced. Much preferred the Pilsener over this one! (5 Dinh Tien Hoang, Hanoi, Vietnam)

On tap in Hanoi. Dunkel is pitch black with mahoganey highlights and a 1cm head of beige foam. The aroma is syrupy, cocoa fudge. Similar raspy carbonation and light body as the lager. The taste is a rich fudge caramel. Pretty good.

Lager is a deep gold with a thick dense head and a grassy, herbal aroma with mild malt notes. Raspy carbonation on a light body. The taste is very green earthy and bitter with not much malt character. Not really my thing but well made.

on tap at the brewery bar in hanoi, sitting out on the balcony. more proof that it’s easier to make a drinkable dark lager than a pale one. just a steady dark brown with a thin cream head; light aroma of stewed stonefruit; somewhat thin and watery with hints of rye and cocoa powder. drinkable enough

Dark brown with some haze. The aroma is toasty with light molasses and nuts. Chewy sweet malts, vaguely nut/molasses oriented. Finishes relatively dry for the style.

Draft @wpub. Very dark brown with red tint in light. Gentle aroma is malty with huskiness in the end and some plummy fruit in the middle. Quaffable palate. Medium carbonation is soft but lively. A little husky but has solid genuine malty goodness. A dry but slightly burnt finish. Nice dry dunkel.

Draft @ brewpub. Nice medium gold with chill haze, thick foamy head. Aroma is fresh, mildly worty, clean and cerealy. Lacking in the hop department. Clean palate, smooth and soft. The flavors come through with a surprisingly hoppy punch, making this a balanced, honest German-style lager. Very nice malt character with floral hops to boot.

Legend Beer Lager
Draught at Legend, HoanKiem location. Hazy pale golden, rich creamy head. Evident grassy nose. Very dry, crisp and grainy with lots and lots of grassy German hops. Strict and correct, an unfiltered arch-German pilsener. Extremely dry and bitter. If there’s anything to complain about it would be that the ligh tbody struggles to uphold the bitterness, which makes it slightly metallic. An excellent effort and a bit of a change of pace with a German style beer in Hanoi, wher nearly all brewpubs are strongly rooted in the Czech tradition.

Legend Beer Weizen
Draught at Legends Beer restaurant. My general thinking that pretty much any wheat beer will usually be at least ok appears to hold up even in Vietnam. Pours a darkish orange with a nice looking foamy head that disappears quickly. Tastes of orange peel and wheat. Flavour is fairly rich and satisfying, but does suffer a tad from a slightly garbagey finish.
