AleWerks Droste Effect
22 oz bottle shared with Tmoney99. Pours a dark brown to black in color with a small tan head. The aroma and flavor have powdery chocolate, Nestlť cocoa, light roast, pretty one dimensional actually, for what it is itís not bad, but I have enjoyed other beers from these guys more.

22 oz bottle from Wegmans in Short Pump, VA The Imperial IPA poured a cloudy Amber color with a big frothy off white head and lacing. Very nice head retention. This is a IPA wonderful. Nice citrus aroma with a hint of pine. The taste is full of warming hop bitterness muted a bit by the higher ABV. The medium body ale has average carbonation. Bitterness is solid, but gentle enough not to throw the sip off-kilter.

Bottle. The aroma is insanely rich with fruity hops, I canít wait to dive in. Itís also a seductive pour, richly orange, with a big, sudsy head. The first swig is very "dirty," with a bit of grittiness. As this warms and settles a bit, it can mostly be idenitied as a warming, boozy, and bigly (if thatís a word) hoppy beer, living up to the AleWerks rep. (#6286, 8/24/2016)

I donít know what I was thinking drinking this at the start of August when it was nearly 100 degrees outside. But whatever. This beer instantly made me think of Anchorís Our Special Ale. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Aroma was holiday spices, light eggnog with notes of mint, coffee. Light gingerbread. Flavor was similar - dark brown sugar notes in this one too. Interesting.

On tap at Mekong, glad to be able to try it. Poured golden, nice head. Big hoppy aroma, lots of citrus, tropical fruit, slight pine. I have been getting this profile quite a bit lately, and Iím not complaining. Dry crackery malts. Very similar in a lot of ways to the Gaffer that I had just had. Well done, liked it a lot.

Crisp nose and lacey tan head with a velvet mouthfeel. Notes of chocolate and toffee on front pallet with a slightly malt bitterness on the finish. This beer at 9.2% has almost no alcohol taste that some exhibit. Drinking and sipping it is a wonderful experience.

AleWerks Bitter Valentine
2015 BJCP Category: 22A Double IPA

AROMA: Strong orange aroma, some alcohol. Some clean malty sweetness in the background. 10/12

APPEARANCE: Flame orange hue, hazy body, visible sediment and CO2. Moderate off white froth leaves great lacing. 3/3

FLAVOR: Orange flavor akin to sweet peel rather than bitter peel. Some sherbet or candy-like flavors. Bitterness is strong and dank, but not syrupy or resiny. There is a firm malty backbone, but it is not especially sweet. Alcohol is subtle. Well balanced. 17/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-full body. Too thick to be crisp, but too carbonated to be syrupy. Alcohol warmth is minor and complements the palette. Very smooth and surprisingly quaffable (not a sipper). 5/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: An excellent overlooked DIPA. Kind of an orange bomb, but tasty, well balanced, and highly drinkable nevertheless. 9/10

TOTAL SCORE: 45/50

Tap into a snifter showing lightly filtered orange with a finger of clean white foam. The nose is subtle with clean guava and very light tropical fruit. The palate is moderately carbonated and medium bodied. Flavors of juicy tropical fruit (pineapple, mango, a bit of kiwi) and a clean juicy finish. Still dry throughout and just in general a very well made IIPA.
