Hoppin’ Frog Rocky Mountain DORIS
Bottle. Pours a jet black color with a medium brown head. A big nose of vanilla, chocolate, ash. Rich, huge dark fruit roast, licorice, syrupy sweet dark fruit, some whiskey. Very flavorful. Great slick palate. A bitter roast finish that is just lovely like bitter chocolate covered in intense plum and dark berries. One of the great all time finishes in a beer akin to Expy which is high praise from me. Lovely soft palate but quite a big beer.

Hoppin’ Frog American Hop Surgeon
22 oz. bottle purchased locally. Pours a mostly clear brownish amber with a small to medum off-white head that settles into a ring while lacing the glass. It’s a big, hoppy brown ale, in short. Well-balanced, with notes of leafy and citrusy hops atop caramel and choclate and toasted malts, light roast, and dark fruits, like raisins and dates. Medium-bodied, with a bitter, sweet mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Too bitter for my malty beer-leaning wife, but my dad and I dug it.

Hoppin’ Frog Teeny Tiny Test Batch IPA Vol. 3
22 oz. bottle from the Tasting Room. Pours a clear gold with a small white head that settles into a thin film and ring while lacing the glass. All three of those lasting head features fade in time, though. The nose starts fresh and herbal and grassy, but it really, really kicks into high gear after 10-15 minutes or so, revealing layers of fresh hop goodness. Borderline dank, but still clean and cutting, with herbs and grass and grapefruit peel and a dash of spice. Sweat, cereal malts, pine resin. Medium-bodied, with medium carbonation and a really bitter mouthfeel, especially initially. The hops blow up as this warms and opens. Fun, fresh IPA. Get one now.

Hoppin’ Frog Oktoberfest Froggy Style Lager
Tap at Erzbierschof Zurich. Rather atypical for an Oktoberfest, but I guess that’s American style. Malt forward aroma with some juicy hops. Medium body with lots of barley taste, crisp carbonation. A bit like watered down and more carbonated barley wine, actually. Finish drops quickly to a lingering sweet malt flavour. Nice.

Hoppin’ Frog Rum Barrel Aged BORIS The Crusher
22oz bomber. Black with a slight head that receeds quickly. Aroma is faint rum, sweet and boozy. Taste is predominately rum, but subtitle. Oak and vanilla. Finish has some vanilla and rum spices. Pallet is a bit thin for a BA imperial stout. Pretty tasty but spirit forward not much stout coming through.

Hoppin’ Frog BORIS The Crusher Reserve
A black beer, a head is medium and dark brown. Aroma has liquirice, dried fruits, plums, some salt liquirice and chocolate, hint a strenght of alcohol. Brilliant. Taste has salt liquirice, roastiness of coffee, some dry wood and dried fruits, a bitterness in the end. Full bodied, smooth and enjoyable palate. Also this Reserve version of BORIS is just brilliant. A bottle is empty too soon.

Hoppin’ Frog TORIS The Tyrant: Triple Oatmeal Stout
Bomber. Amazed to see this arrive in Chicago so soon. Pours a stouty brownish-black opaque to the nines (on a scale from 1-5), thick, creamy froth of a head that looks literally like hot fucking chocolate and has amazing retention. Nose is thick with milk chocolate, coffee, molasses, roast, hints of licorice, vanilla and wood. Mouth is intense, oily and velvety soft, big sweetness up front with dark fruit, dark chocolate, dark roasted Ethiopian coffee (I say that because years ago I brought some fancy Ethiopian varietal -- from Intelligentsia I think -- and the shit was described as having earthy blueberry notes... but I digress)...., molasses cookies, good dose of sooty roasted barley, runs from sweet to a lingering bitterness along the way, finishes with some notable warmth and booziness. Complex. I’ve had a fair few Imperial Stouts over the years and if you look at my history on RB over that period, you’ll see I’m stingy with the high scores. But this shit is unreal. The groggy frog croaks O-H-I-O in celebration of the state finally dropping its archaic ABV limit law. Bout fuckin time. Slŕinte fellas!

Hoppin’ Frog Killa Vanilla Extraordinary IPA
On tap at Hoppin Frog. Pours a murky orange with a thin head and aromas of... well... those orange cream pushpops you got as a kid from the ice cream truck. Flavor is creamy and vanilla heavy up front before fading into orange and resin. Really unique and definitely intriguing. It’s a little sweet though, so I’m not sure I would want a full bomber.

Hoppin’ Frog Oktoberfest Froggy Style Lager
A beautiful, copper colour, a head is quite small and blond. Aroma has riped and sweet fruits, some raisins, fruit cake, richness of malts. Taste has strong maltyness, plums and also other dried fruits, some bitterness. Medium+ bodied, slippery, easy to drink. Brilliant lager, richness of malts with dried fruits. If the all Oktoberfest beers would be like this, then the Fall would be much better.

A nice orange colour, a head is quite big and blond. Aroma has strong tropical fruitness, pineapple, mandarin, fruit candies, fructose. Rich with a fruit meat. Taste has tropical fruitness, grapefruits, good maltyness, some herbal like spicyness, maybe the origin is the used rye. A bitterness is slightly slow but then nice, medium and long lasting. Medium+ bodied, quite smooth. Very nice aroma, taste has also maltyness, balanced and succesfully.

Shared bomber poured to snifters showing a black/brown hue, with a frothy layer of brownish tan head foam, and spotty cling to the lacing. The nose was roasted and very malty, with mocha notes, and slight licorice. Medium+ bodied, with low carbonation, the taste was as the aroma, adding roasted & earthy bitterness, some sticky sweetness, and creaminess to the mouthfeel that mellowed the alcohol presence just a bit. Decent.

Hoppin’ Frog TORIS The Tyrant: Triple Oatmeal Stout
Bottle thanks to Brandon. Pours a pitch black color, maybe the darkest beer I’ve ever seen, a medium brown head. A really wonderful nose of ash, dark chocolate, roast and dark fruit. Big sweet dark fruit, massive sugary malts, some licorice, bitter dark chocolates. This is really big, but very drinkable. A nice palate. Yeah, it’s hot and I’m working on quite a bit of debauchery here. Very flavorful and just a lovely big decadent beer. Roasty throughout.

Hoppin’ Frog Barrel Aged In-Ten-Sity
Draft at the Tasting Room. Pours a cloudy amber color with a small beige head that settles into an island of film, ring, and a trailing sheet of lace in the glass. Notes of vanilla, brown sugar, caramel, raisins, maraschino cherries, fruitcake, wood, whiskey, earthy bitterness, and a bit of citrus peel. Medium-bodied, with moderate to medium carbonation and a really sweet mouthfeel that’s bitter in the back. I actually might like this with a little less hop forwardness, but it’s really enjoyable overall. I probably wouldn’t want a whole bottle; 5 oz. is nice.

Hoppin’ Frog Barrel Aged BORIS Reserve
Draft at the Tasting Room. Pours a near black color - almost but not quite as dark as TORIS - with a dark tan head that settles into a film and ring while lacing the glass. Another beauty. Much sweeter than the TORIS next to it, but delightfully so. Layers of vanilla, brown sugar, roasted malts, tobacco, dark chocolate, bourbon, charred oak, and a hint of dark fruits. Medium-plus bodied, with moderate carbonation and a sweet, roasty, and boozy - but not overpoweringly so - mouthfeel. Luscious and delightful. When I tried BORIS Reserve, I figured it would lend itself nicely to barrels. Hunch confirmed.

Hoppin’ Frog TORIS The Tyrant: Triple Oatmeal Stout
Draft at the Tasting Room. As good looking as all the stouts are here, this beauty takes the cake. Near black, with a finger of brown head that laces the glass while settling into a film. Intense roasted malts, with baker’s chocolate, burnt brown sugar, tobacco, earth, and brownies, and a bit of that underlying oatmeal stout sweetness. But man, it’s big and rich and roasty first of all. Full-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a sweet, smooth, roasty, and intense mouthfeel. Some slight bitterness and alcohol burn on the finish. This one’s a beast. Now that the Ohio ABV cap is lifted, I’m glad these guys were among the first to step up to the challenge and deliver.

Hoppin’ Frog Old School Baltic Porter
Draft at the Tasting Room. Pours a deep, dark, opaque brown with a small tan head that settles into an island and ring, leaving sloppy lace in the glass. Pretty. Big dose of brown and toasted sugars, with cocoa, caramel, earth, dry leaves, and wood. Seems a little old almost, like a big porter I forgot about in the cellar. Medium-bodied, with modest carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel. Rich, but odd in that old-seeming way. Maybe that’s just the Baltic porter character.

Hoppin’ Frog Grapefruit Gangster Frog IPA
Draft at the Tasting Room. Pours a cloudy orange gold with a small off-white head that settles into an island of film and ring around the glass, leaving a sheet of lace within it. Plenty of grapefruit - peel and pulp - with pine, orange peel, caramel malts, and a squeeze of lemon. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a citrusy, juicy, and bitter - but balanced - mouthfeel. Not terribly complex, as there’s so much grapefruit character in here, but it’s tasty and satisfying in its own right. Good thing it starts from such a good base IPA.

Hoppin’ Frog Caliente Pizza Collab: I. Pizza. A. Ale
Draft at the Tasting Room. Pours a hazy dull gold with a small white head that settles into a film and ring, leaving a sheet of lace in the glass. Notes of celery, florals, citrus zest, sweat, grass, and pale and bready malts. Some yeasty esters, too, adding more fruit and dough. Light to medium bodied, with modest carbonation and a damp, bitter, earthy mouthfeel. Muddled and odd. Not bad, just strange.

Hoppin’ Frog Tadpole Series: Cory’s Breakfast Stout
Draft at the Tasting Room. Pours a deep, dark, opaque brown with a small tan head that settles into a ring and some film. Like all stouts here, it’s gorgeous on the pour. Probably enhanced by the cinnamon spice, this has a big earthy hop bitterness, with fudge, cocoa, dark fruits (raisins, dates), mild cinnamon, vanilla, and maple. Although the last two get somewhat muddled in overall sweetness, more as an offset than a balance to the bitterness and spice. Medium-full bodied, with moderate carbonation and a smooth, earthy, sweet mouthfeel. Doesn’t quite stand up to regular BORIS (which is clearly the base here), as some of the attempt at complexity is lost. Not as balanced as I’d like. But still very good.

Bomber poured into a brandy snifter. The beer is a clear brown aith a velvety head of khaki foam. The aroma has notes of dark chocolate, earthy, ashy hop notes, and nutty toffee. Moderate bitterness at first in the taste, but as the beer warms up, that bitterness subdues and becomes more approachable. Velvety mouthfeel. Big body and moderate carbonation.
