Carlow O’Hara’s Irish Stout 3.5
Opaque black color. Thick creamy and sparkly brown 2 finger head lasting around 6 minutes. Strong legs and no visible activity. Aromas and flavors of nuts, toffee, cocoa and coffee with herbal spices. Strong earthy smell with a roasted bitter taste. Creamy heavy body with prickly carbonation. Strong and long bitter finish ending with a thick smoky mouth coat and highly dry. Overall : The craft and flavors are good but it’s slightly slate missing some freshness. Too dry and bitter for my taste, preferring sweeter stouts.

Carlow O’Hara’s Irish Red 3.5
Pours dark ruby color with medium, short lasting, slightly off-white head. Smell is mostly burnt malts with notes of caramel. As it warms up it becomes more cake-like and caramel comes more into the light. Medium to full body with soft carbonation. Taste of caramel, bread, roasted malts, biscuits, hops. Slightly smoked. Short and dry finish. Overall, very smooth and drinkable. Would definitely drink this one again.

butelka, warka do 28.02.17.

Carlow O’Hara’s Irish Pale Ale 3.6
Pours a clear looking orange color with a small white head. Beautiful refreshing smell of citrus. Mouthfeel is wonderful. Starts off soft and creamy but then high carbonation hits in. It’s like the citrus aroma and bitterness comes straight from the bubbles - tingly sensation on the tongue is top notch and very refreshing. Finish is mostly dry and bitter. Overall, this is a great example of the style. Recommended!

Carlow O’Hara’s Barrel Aged Series Leann Folláin (Irish Whiskey) 4.2
After being anti imperial stout for awhile, either I like the style again or I've hit a run of good ones. This has a bit of cask feel. Doesn't really have a strong whiskey flavor but is quite tasty.

Alengrin
Carlow O’Hara’s Irish Red 3
’Real’ Irish red (if that is a style to begin with - I’ve read different opinions on that, but let’s respect Michael Jackson’s pioneering work in this) with quite thick and even frothy, irregularly lacing, pale greyish white, dispersed head and deep copper colour with burgundy hue, translucent and clear. Aroma of caramel and toffee, damp cloth, hazelnuts, bitter honey, brown bread crust, dry autumn leaves, dead tree branches, ’haemoglobin’ iron, chicory, roasted walnut, faint suggestions of old cocoa powder and dried Mediterranean herbs. Clean, crisp onset, fairly neutral with almost no sweetness and only basic sourishness (in fact, almost lager-like, which some Irish ’ales’ apparently are), minerally with medium carbo and supple, smooth, light mouthfeel; malts have the main part here, again lacking in caramelly sweetness and turning to nutty and strongly toasted bitterish flavours almost right away, while some subtle spicy hints come up, announcing the background hops, manifesting themselves in a very leafy, lightly peppery bitterness at the end with retronasal floral qualities. A resinous hop ’feeling’ remains in the back of the mouth, working well with the toasted malts. After their stout, this is somewhat of a disappointment: very straightforward, toastedly malty and earthy hoppy, but that’s about all there is to say. Irish red, whether you believe in this being a separate, traditional Anglo-Saxon ale style or not, was never meant to be ambitious in terms of flavour complexity, I am well aware of that, and I have to admit that this is a lot better and more ’natural’ than e.g. Kilkenny, but somehow I expected a bit more, especially in terms of fruitiness. This is very drinkable, but does not show any aspirations at being better than Kilkenny and frankly, comes across as very lager-like (and frankly, I am almost sure it is one). Irish red, much like French bière de garde, can be top or bottom fermented, but I would like to meet a really artisanal top fermented one some day - if such a thing exists in the first place. And after all: is this anyone’s favorite style anyway, apart from nationalistic motivations?

500ml bottle from Reillys, Lisnaskea:
This one was another fairly good offering from O’Hara’s without it really challenging their Irish Stout or India Pale Ale as the brewery’s best. There was some nice biscuit malts & a couple of earthy hops coming through but it wasn’t really as standout offering from the Carlow brewery.

W zapachu wyczuwalna słodycz oraz lekka paloność. W smaku mleczno-czekoladowe. Drobno pęcherzykowa pianka utrzymuje się dość długo, w efekcie czego piwo wizualnie prezentuje się bardzo dobrze. Dość złożone dobry przykład stylu.

Carlow O’Hara’s Irish Pale Ale 3
Bottle, best before July 2016, drunk 1/8/16.
Copper-golden body is clear and well-carbonated with an off-white head atop that shows moderate retention.
Floral, lightly citrusy hops are definitely prominent in the nose, but are atop a layer of rather bready/papery malts that seem quite dull. A hint of metal, perhaps, but otherwise clean, with no alcohol and (at least) no resin or aggressive hop character.
Pretty mindless drinking, with highly attenuated malts leaving behind a somewhat scratchy/husky texture. Hop bitterness is mild and the light grapefruit zest, fresh dill and cucumber-like hop character remains, though there are touches of soapiness. A worthy effort, but the Irish seem better suited to brewing delicious stouts.

Carlow O’Hara’s Irish Pale Ale 2.4
Bottle out of one of my Christmas selection boxes. Orange gold with a frilling collar. Bouquet of wicker, orange boiled sweets, privet and adhesive. Dry hopped IPA?? Doesn’t smell like one. Non-committal soapy regurgitated peach boiled sweet flavour. Had such high hopes for this having not tasted any Irish non-macro stuff for about 5 years and it’s a total washout. Feels stale and sun damaged and it’s over a year in date. Zero hop. Get me a Gwince.
