Idle Tongue
Cask at The Brewery Tap, Chester on 7 Dec 2012. Poured a very hazy golden colour, with a scummy white head. Very unappealing aroma; sulphur in there, masked some wet grass and flat malt. Flavours weren’t too bad; not exciting, but palatable malty, fruity notes. Finish was boiled sweets, grain and a little bitterness.

Cask at the Alexandra Arms, Rugby, 16/12/13. Light black with a moderate light tan head that retains well. Nose is light roast, brown sugars, dark toffee fudge, dark berry fruit tang. Taste comprises earthy cocoa, jammy berry fruit, toffee fudge, light roastings, dark fruit tones. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, light mineral bite lending towards a dry closure. Ok stout.

Draught (Elm Tree, Cambridge)
Sweet mustard aroma. Gravy-like savoury taste - sage and onion stuffing. Flat. Past its prime from that clue, I’d say, but it’s only been on one day. Herbal finish. Taragon.

Idle Tongue
Cask at Baxter’s Court, JDW, London. Pours clear gold with a small, white cream head. Doughy pale malt nose. Light to medium sweet with notes of hay and plastic. Light bodied with soft carbonation. Light sweetness at the end with moderate straw and faint plastic bitterness. A mediocre beer that seems to be in rather poor shape - or perhaps it’s just a downright bad beer. Who knows...

Cask conditioned handpump Rowell Charter Rothwell 17/10/12. A black beer with a beige head and lace. A roasty and fruity aroma with a hint of sourness. Sweeter and roastier in the mouth with a decent length of flavour. Not Earth shattering, but a decent stout.

Handpull at The Wheatsheaf (Southwark). Deep copper-amber with a small but long-lasting creamy beige head. Nice plum/prune lightly sour aoma, a hint of leathery merlot - some light herbal bitterness - taste too, maybe a bit grapey. Slick, lightly cabonated, finishes quick and dry and fruity (like eating a fistful of good raisins) with just a whisper of lingering acidity.

Cask (GBBF2011, Wed)
Coffee roast aroma, fairly sweet. After tasting it I can detect some sharpness, almost sourness - yes, I can smell the sourness now. However, some sips are devoid of it. Dry ferny hops - fresh hop cones, but a bit papery in the finish. Grainy and roasty. Has ups and downs.

Cask (gravity) - The Duke of Wellington, Norwich. Fine & bubbly, lasting beige head, soapy lce; clear copper-amber body. Biscuity malt, caramel & mid fruit aromas. A bit of sulphur too on the swirl. A fair fruity malt body, some yeast though a mostly hidden plastic note does come through. A relatively balanced & quaffable but unexciting bitter. Light to medium body with a bit of spritz on the palate, a fairly short toasty-grassy bitterness & a lingering fruity aftertaste.

Idle B
In case you are wondering, judging by the pumpclip, the ’B’ of the title appears to be of the insect variety, and is portrayed being suitably idle in a deckchair. Cask at Wellington Arms, Bedford. Gold with a small white head. Slight sourness in both aroma and taste, but the main feature is a pleasant sweetness with some grainy notes. Mid bitter finish. Slightly watery to be honest, but decent enough on a summer’s day. Though it is actually now October with dank, foggy mornings here in the Ouse Valley.

Cask (handpump) at the Jolly Brewers, Lincoln, April 2008. A really nice looking stout. Very dark but not quite opaque with a reddish tinge and a modest, but lasting beige head. Lots of chocolate and burnt/roast malt in the aroma. The burnt malt turns quite bitter on the palate and the mouthfeel is light, maybe a little thin, with a pronounced bitter finish. Decent, but doesn’t quite fulfil the initial promise of the appearance and aroma.
