North Island Beer Reviews

North Island Mari-O Bro. 3.7
Tap at Burger Mania Ebisu. Deep brown with slight amber highlights. Fresh baked bread all over the nose. Great malty, toffee-like notes on the palate. Well-balanced and a dry finish. Very nice vehicle for Maris Otter. HIdes the abv well. One of the better North Island seasonals of late.

North Island Hokkaido Komugi Ji-Biru Weizen 3.4
Bottle shared in Yoyogi park. Decent wheat character with an earthy feel, maybe not as impressive as their Coriander White for example but good enough I guess. It seems that Japanese wheat is working well these days with local beers, much better than local hops at least.

North Island Dunkel Weizen 3.3
Bottle from Tanakaya. Pours a deep brown with a finger of head that lingers throughout. Cacao and salami on the nose. Super light body, almost watery, with average carbonation. Very light banana and smokiness on the palate. Very interesting take on a dunkelweizen. Not enough weizen qualities but the smokiness is an interesting touch. Green banana on the finish.

North Island Kamifu 100 Pale Ale 3.1
Tap at Komachi. Grassy, lemon nose, dry crackery malt, some caramel. Sweet flavor, caramel, some diacetyl, oranges, grass. Very bitter, even a bit harsh. Not one of their best.
Wednesday, March 16, 2016

North Island Kamifu 100 Pale Ale 3.7
Tap at Gremlin. Nice, grassy, bit of pineapple, little bitterness, nice enough.
Tuesday, March 08, 2016

North Island Kamifu 100 Pale Ale 3.3
Draught at Gremlin. Quite hop forward but hops donít shine that much though, mostly grassy and piney notes with a touch of citrus and bitter finish, body being almost watery. Fairly unimpressive, Iíd much rather stick to the classic Kin-Oni.
Monday, March 07, 2016

North Island Kamifu 100 Pale Ale 2.8
Tap at Gremlin. Light orange and pine notes on the nose with some malt. Taste is grainy and malt-forward. Some light pine and grapefruit on the palate. Harsh bitter finish. Very simplistic pale ale without much Cascade flavor even though itís a single hop beer. Iím guessing the Cascade hops grown in Kamifu just werenít that great to begin with.

North Island Ebetsu Komugi Beer 3.4
Bottle from Sapporo station. Aroma is strong and spicy, clove, quite sweet too and a bit poopy. Something sharp. Taste is better, nice creamy wheatiness, spice is dialed down a little. Not quite sure though.

North Island Forest Pale Ale 3.4

North Island / Aqula Short Summer Session Ale 3.7
Other places online (Untappd) seem to be listing this as an aqula beer but they also have a Summer Session Ale. This was listed as a North Island x Aqula collaboration at Bungalowís 3rd Anniversary Event. It poured a light matte gold with a thin soapy head. The aroma was a minty orange and grape fruity hoppiness with some malt sweetness. Medium bodied & fairly smooth this beer was easy to drink & a satisfying session beer. Tuesday, June 30, 2015

North Island Coriander Black 3.7

Malt balance is nice with a kind of sweet, mildly tart and bitter palate. Slightly bitter finish that doesnít linger. Not your usual IPA at all...a fun beer.

North Island Beer E-IPA 3.5
North island E-IPA an IPA made with European hops. Not so elegant 60 IBU 6% a deep cloudy orange gold pour with s beige head. It has a woodsy hoppy fruit nose. Med-light bodied with an ascerbic bitter finish. The taste is bitter wheaty fruit - berry hoppiness which intrigues me.
Saturday, May 09, 2015

North Island / Mikkeller Haskap Blonde 2.4
Scent blueberries with a little sour. Sour taste but also watery. Very carbonic acid. Light bitterness that disappears quickly. Not impressive at all. Follow me @ Kung av Ųl @ Facebook for more pictures and ratings.

Monday, April 20, 2015

North Island Smonkey Lager 3.4
Tap at Craft Beer Works Kamikaze, Osaka. Pale golden; unexpected colour. White head, some lacing. This is interesting. Thereís a citrus hoppiness running through along with the smoke. The combo is a little odd but they donít seem to get in each otherís way, but nor do they really work together. Memorable.
Sunday, April 19, 2015

North Island / Mikkeller Haskap Blonde 3.6
Tap at BrewDog Roppongi, Tokyo. Hazy deep red shade. Short white head. Intriguing gummy worm or jelly bean-like fantasy fruit aroma. Very nice tart berry taste; not particularly sour. Frutiness seems to lie somewhere between raspberry and blueberry. Tasty and refreshing.

North Island / Mikkeller Haskap Blonde 4
Bottle, thanks to TimE, 04/18/2015. Pours a reddish brown color, frothy strawberry cream colored head fades to a nice crema on the surface. Aroma is a mix, tart funky berry-like notes with Belgian yeast and cereal malts, yet also some citrusy/pine hop notes noticeable in the background. Taste is mildly tart, jammy berry notes with caramel marmalade hops, bitterness and funky bramble character in the finish. Medium body, lot of depth with all the flavors going on. Delicious, complex.
Saturday, April 18, 2015

North Island Hop Tea -Single Hop Session IPA (Galaxy) 3.5
Tap at Komachi. Cloudy, glowing, deep golden orange color. Nice nose: grapefruit gelato, light spicy character. Hoppy flavor, grapefruit rind, light crackery malt. A touch of orange. Very bitter. A little too bitter and dry, without the malt meatiness to back it up.
Friday, April 17, 2015

North Island American Smoked Ale 3.4
nice Gouda nose with moderate amount of hops. Mouth is medium, with moderate amount of hops, the finish is semi aggressive bitterness with tons of smoke. Very different smoke ale due to its hoppiness, but the fact they called it an American Smoked Ale makes sense. I prefer maltier smoked ales, but nonetheless this was a solid effort.
