Red Eye Meezyís Jam Malt Liquor
Light grain malts, caramel. Clear gold, small, creamy, white head. Light to medium sweet. More grain and bread malts, caramel, slightly harsh notes in the otherwise sweet finish, lively carbonation. My first Malt Liquor, inoffensive, yet most unremarkable. Keg at The Old Fashioned, Madison, WI.

Red Eye Thrust IPA
Not my kind of style for an IPA. I prefer more of a west coast style type of hop.

Red Eye 2 X 4
Draught snifter at the brewpub, July 28th. Translucent dark maple, with a tiny ring of diminishing foam, a bit of faint lacing...sweet candy sugar, shortbread, and apple-cinnamon (the real stuff, not shit like Apple Jacks) show up in the not-quite-too-sweet nose - the breadiness is more evident here than it was in the sugary Dubbel, and saves it...body is super-sweet though, with brown sugar/caramel malts, sassafras, bourbon-vanilla and maple all contributing to what would be a giant sugary congealed mess, if not for just enough malts and thickness in the body to support it all, and a little bit of drying out to the texture by the finish...carbonation could be a little stronger, and this is in the end a bit too much; those who arenít crazy about this style should absolutely avoid, this doesnít have the finesse of a Rochefort or Westvleteren and is ultimately too sweet and a bit cloying. As somebody who does generally like quads, I can say that I enjoyed it, especially coming after itís polar opposite in the sour Red Eye 8. But itís far from a great example of the style.

Red Eye 8
Draught snifter at the brewpub, July 28th. Opaque black-walnut body, lasting bit of white head, thin crystalline lacing...nose is strong sour cherry, hints of strawberries, dry wood, a touch of bourbon-vanilla as it warms...body is sour/tart throughout, dry woodiness showing up again, not much cherry or fruitiness of any kind, really - a very sharp and hard feel to the thing overall, which at that moment I really liked, but I could easily see it being fatiguing eventually as the body was just a bit on the thin side and the carbonation rather strong...mineralic notes began to take over, and Iím glad I had something else to move onto. Itís good, no question of that for me, but the extreme sour/dry doesnít overall work as well here as it would in a lambic.

Red Eye Scarlet 7 Dubbel
Draught sample at the brewpub, July 28th. Dark amber-bronze, almost opaque, with a bit of lasting off-white head...VERY sweet nose is all candy-sugar at first; eventually a bit of plumminess shows up; itís offputting actually though it becomes tolerable after a few minutes...thankfully itís a bit more balanced in the mouth; still quite sweet, but a touch of alcoholic harshness is welcome, as is a hint of dry bread crumbs and a little tartness towards the finish. Reasonably full body.

Red Eye Big Betty Dunkelweiss
Draught sample at the brewpub, July 28th. Hazy dark-ish amber, seems a little lighter and thinner-looking than usual for style, with a bit of lasting head...nose is caramelized banana, clove, and I think some candied cherries...body is moderately tart throughout, with little sweetness, lightly bready with some dry caramel malts vaguely evident, a bit thin-textured though not ruinously so. Itís all right.

Red Eye Thrust IPA
Draught sample at the brewpub, July 28th. Pale amber-orange pour, with a fairly decent lasting head (especially for a sample-sized pour) and noticeable lacing...pungent nose containing tropical fruits (mango, papaya), a bit of lime, and a faint resinous touch...expertly done moderately sweet, moderate-to-strongly bitter body, juicy and fairly full without becoming syrupy, drying out nicely in the finish. Perhaps just a bit undercarbonated. Not a knock-your-socks off example by any means but a solid IPA Iíd be glad to see on tap near me.

Red Eye Mindís Eye Rye Porter
Draught sample at the brewpub, July 28th. Deep, opaque walnut brown, with a strong lasting tan head and thick crystalline lacing as it descends...nose is as expected, rye, and toasted rye at that, along with sourdough and a bit of nuts (pecans), itís all roasty-toasty loveliness...in the mouth itís sweeter than that deeply roasty nose might lead one to expect, with hints of soft maple and vanilla, but never fear the toasted malts and rye spiciness are present all the way to the finish...could be just a little fuller but thatís not a big complaint. Porter was one of my favorite styles once upon a time - now itís one that, while not avoiding, Iím almost never drawn to; but Iím glad I had this one, probably the best sample I had at this fine brewpub, and a reminder of what I do love about the style, when I can send my memory and tastebuds back a couple of decades.

Red Eye Man Pants
Sample at the brewpub, July 28th. Pale, clear gold with a tiny bit of foam that lasts...nose is mostly big pale malts, lovely bready sourdough, fresh and warm and inviting you into the bakery, with just a whiff of grass and thistle to remind you that itís beer...body is even better with more of that dry Noble hop character, a wonderful bitter-malt balance that is carried throughout, and a fine if rather short finish. Very solid start to what turned out to be an excellent brewpub experience overall.

Red Eye Lemongrass Rye
Tap at OF. Pale orange-yellow-tan body. Steady, thin creamy white head. The aroma is really unappetizing, buttery rye. Probably the worst beer Iíve had from Red Eye. Absolute fail. The lemongrass attempts to give it some balance, but can hardly rescue it. Buttery, slick. Insipid, lifeless body.

Tap at Old Fashioned. Filtered orange-tan body. Respectable, steady off-white head. Sort of a buttery, grainy backdrop. Earthy off tones. The flavor is odd and bitter astringent. Not much finesse, weak end product.

Draft. Poured lighter amber with a nice off-white head. The aroma picked up sweeter nutty and fruity notes with mild floral and grassy accents. The flavor found more of the fruity malts plus caramel and nutty notes at the core, with fresh fruity and floral bitterness around.. finished sweet with a nice bitter kick. Lighter-bodied with moderate carbonation.. fresh and enjoyable.

Draft at Red Eye. Poured clear, light-medium orange with a sticky beige head. The aroma picked up juicy pine, grassy notes, and some redder fruits over a caramel base.. very green and very fresh. The flavor found bitter pine and fruity notes on the tip of the tongue, with semi-sweet caramel and biscuity malts following.. floral and peppery bitterness joined for the warm finish. Medium-bodied and very bitter on the palate.. a little sharp at times, but solid overall.

Sample @ bar, growler @home. Caramel/toffee sweetness with a little campfire smoke.Color of weak coffee with minimal head. Not to heavy at first taste (for a dunkler) light pine at the finish. This needs to be enjoyed at 50 degrees, at a colder temp you donít pick up the flavor says well. Overall pretty good, a little different beer with the smoke. Tasty

Taster on tap at GTMW. Maybe should be listed as a black IPA? Half hazy red brown color. Thin khaki head. Leaves good, thicker lace. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, kind of slick, lighter carbonation. Light slick finish. Dark fruity flavor, some nutty malt, light coffee roast. Some earthy hop, but less than Iíd like, more malt dominated. Moderate sweet taste, light bitter. Decent hoppy brown ale, but I was hoping for more from this. A bit too malty / sweet for me.
