3.2 Red Eye 2 X 4 Draught snifter at the brewpub, July 28th. Translucent dark maple, with a tiny ring of diminishing foam, a bit of faint lacing...sweet candy sugar, shortbread, and apple-cinnamon (the real stuff, not shit like Apple Jacks) show up in the not-quite-too-sweet nose - the breadiness is more evident here than it was in the sugary Dubbel, and saves it...body is super-sweet though, with brown sugar/caramel malts, sassafras, bourbon-vanilla and maple all contributing to what would be a giant sugary congealed mess, if not for just enough malts and thickness in the body to support it all, and a little bit of drying out to the texture by the finish...carbonation could be a little stronger, and this is in the end a bit too much; those who aren’t crazy about this style should absolutely avoid, this doesn’t have the finesse of a Rochefort or Westvleteren and is ultimately too sweet and a bit cloying. As somebody who does generally like quads, I can say that I enjoyed it, especially coming after it’s polar opposite in the sour Red Eye 8. But it’s far from a great example of the style. 3.5 Red Eye 8 Draught snifter at the brewpub, July 28th. Opaque black-walnut body, lasting bit of white head, thin crystalline lacing...nose is strong sour cherry, hints of strawberries, dry wood, a touch of bourbon-vanilla as it warms...body is sour/tart throughout, dry woodiness showing up again, not much cherry or fruitiness of any kind, really - a very sharp and hard feel to the thing overall, which at that moment I really liked, but I could easily see it being fatiguing eventually as the body was just a bit on the thin side and the carbonation rather strong...mineralic notes began to take over, and I’m glad I had something else to move onto. It’s good, no question of that for me, but the extreme sour/dry doesn’t overall work as well here as it would in a lambic. Thursday, August 11, 2016 | |
