Nose is gently citric with fresh grapefruit hop aromas. Pours a deep copper with a medium-strong beige head. Flavour is a balance of fat and buttery and fresh and fruity with finishing notes of elderflower, grapefruit and ever-so-slight aniseed. Slightly thin mouthfeel, but a pleasingly long and bitter finish. Not a bad drop.

From the bottle, just on cool. In a dark hotel room it seemed to shimmer in the light but held a haze. A deep russet copper with little evident carbonation, and crowned by a generous, off white pad that left a fine lace. Damp moss comes to mind on the first whiff, with lots of peat, toffee, caramelised rhubarb, wet earth, nutmeg and damp, charred wood coming through, interesting!
Very earthy in the mouth with sweet dark toffee and cola, damp herbs and musty old rye bread loaves to dither from the aroma. Body is medium to light, the carbonation just a light spritz. Drops off herbal, considerably short with a lowly bitterness. Dry past the front, a mild nuttiness builds, quite raw with delicate hop notes lingering briefly. Lovely drinking this one, more an old ale I thought as its full of weird character. Nice! (50cL, BBE 12/11, Darts Farm, Topsham, Exeter, Devon)

Bottle. Bronze and clear.Lovely hoppy tones and a gentle lingering hoppiness. Slightly bitter and very well balanced. Much better than i expected from the amateurish label that may deter people from trying a very nice beer.

500ml bottle (ChrisO’s pre-GBBF2011 "Donkey Dork Lord" shindig)
Spicy aroma. Cakey. Was looking forward to it, but when it hit the mouth that deflated a bit. It’s actually quite dull. It is a rich bitter, but it’s a touch sweet. Would have preferred more attenuation, more nuttiness, to be more like the ESBs I like.
