De Struise Brouwers Reviews

Struise Black Albert 4.2

Black in color with strong brown head. Rich chocolate cake aroma with a touch of booze. Complex boozy chocolatey flavor but extremely well balanced and sweet (without overdoing it) with a light lingering charred wood and burnt malt finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Struise C-DOS Cuvée Delphine On Steroids aka Pablo Eiscobar 2.8
330ml botte - thanks ElviraS
Woh, super hot aroma. Not saying 40%, more 50%. Nice cherry chocolate cake. Taste dominated by hot, hot booze. Some breadiness is nice, a little bit of raisins. But the whole thing is a booze bomb extrordinaire.

Struise XXX Rye Quad Reserva (Bourbon Barrel Aged) 3.9
In this dark light, pours a deep amber. Good head upon pour but not much retention. Sweet nose, light prune. Clean taste throughout, nothing cloying or sticking. Prune and plum flavors predominate. Little indication of the bourbon barrel aging, though it's possible the smoothness is a result. Pleasant and easy drinking considering the style.

Scopey
Struise C-DOS Cuvée Delphine On Steroids aka Pablo Eiscobar 2.2
Bottle thanks to Mr C Garvie. It pours clear, oily deep brown. The nose is rich, hot alcohol, rubber, burning pile of tires, big medicinal character, permanent marker pen and earth. The taste is rich, oily, hot, burnt wood, burnt rubber, charred wood, umami character and dull vanilla & toffee in the background with a hot, burning finish. Full body, oily and slick mouth-feel. Again with the Black Albert version, the alcohol heat rips through your palate. Not great.

Struise Black Albert Vintage 2012 on Steroids aka BAOS 2.4
Bottle thanks to Craig! It pours clear, oily ruby-brown with unsurprisingly no head. The nose is rich, oil, strong alcohol vibe, earthy, charred wood, dirt, burnt rubber and plastic. The taste is rich, oily, hard hot alcohol, burnt rubber, charred wood, medicinal, liquorice, smoky, TCP and dry wood with a hot, burning finish. Full body and rich, oily mouth-feel. Really rather rough overall. The alcohol ruins the palate. Damn.

Struise / Bridge Road Imperialist 2.8
33cl bottle. Cloudy light yellow, almost like a witbier (weihenstephan yeast?). Thick fluffy head. Citrusy, spicy, doughy. Sweet and boozy. Sticky palate, average carbonation. I probably dislike imperial lagers, surely because both words lager and imperialist do not inspire me.

Struise Five Squared 3.7
Sampled during RBWG Tampa 2015. Amber pour with a practically non-existent head. Very strong, boozy sweet nose. Hot caramel and apple. Aggressive, nose-tingling stuff. The flavor’s hugely sweet. Apple and pie crust. Toffee. Hot, but not overbearing. Oily, rich body. A real sipper. Decent in small samples.

Old review I think for Alvinne festival. Pours a light yellow with a fluffy white cap. The smell is grain and grass. The taste is grain & grass with a crisp, slightly bitter ending. Elegant, a bit oily, light+ in body.

Struise Black Albert 4.2
Bottle. Pitch black, espresso, fizzy head, quickly dissipates. Black licorice, candied pecans, chocolate icing, plum fruit esters, dark dry raw chocolate/cocoa. Well attenuated, with a chalky, milk chocolate powder finish. Baked brownies breadiness. A hint of sugary syrup. Very clean overall, a clean hop bitterness (earthy), not acrid. Dangerously drinkable.

Struise Tsjeeses Reserva - Port 4
I really liked this beer a lot. Pours a dark amber color with a frothy white head. Nice aromas of dark fruit, caramel, toffee, wood and a tinge of alcohol. Tastes more of the same with a nice balance between the fruity tones and malty sweetness. Medium bodied.

Struise Tsjeeses Reserva - Bourbon 3.6
Pours a vibrant orange color with a big frothy white head. Smells and tastes of honey, light fruit, toffee, caramel and some alcohol presence as well. Medium-full body. Overall I liked their Port-Aged beer more but this was really good too.

Struise Black Albert 4.2
330 mL bottle(s) shared by ebone1988. Motherfucker gave me my own bottle! Thanks! The pour is a jet black with a thin dark khaki colored head that falls to a thicker collar, leaving no lace. The aroma is really good. It's not especially layered, but is quite complex. The first shallow hit offers a light fruitiness in front of a sweet chocolate and a beautiful roast. There is a cross between raisins and a sweet licorice. The deeper you inhale, the better it gets. There is a roasty booziness that really defines it, but the dark chocolate leads to a nice bitterness. Also present is a light gingerbread type of hint, adding a little spice here. This smells great. The flavor is, well, not up to snuff compared to the aroma. There is a lot of roast and a light bitterness before the dark fruits take over. There are multiple fruits that poke through. Raisins and plums for sure, and a lighter fruit is also present. There is a little booze that comes through. It's a little disappointing with the aroma that was offered. The mouth feel is a little thin and slightly watery. The carbonation is soft, and not quite as good as it should be. The aftertaste is sweet chocolate and a lightly dark, bitter roast. It's good, for sure, but not as good as it could've been. Well done though. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Struise Black Albert 4.3
Bottles shared with koleminer20. Aroma is roasted malt, licorice, some kind of baking spice, like a gingerbread cookie, chocolate, coffee, dark fruit, complex and very nice. Appearance is black, dark brown head, poured like motor oil. Taste is dark fruit, roasted malt, licorice, chocolate, coffee, but not as much happening in the flavor as in the aroma. Mouthfeel is a bit thinner than I wanted, medium to heavy body with light carbonation, roasted malt in the aftertaste. Overall, this is very good despite my true expectations not being met.

Struise Rio Reserva 3.9
2008, on tap for Backcountry Pizza’s 5th anniversary party. Pours a bright, unclear orange color, with a small, beige, creamy, and persistent head. The nose is caramel, vanilla, rye, orange peels, and sweet cherries. The flavor is sweet, with a light bitterness and a warming, boozy finish. Medium to heavy body, a little acidic, and just a little watery. The aroma of this beer is simply fantastic - I could sit and smell it forever - but the mouthfeel is a little weak.

Struise Black Damnation I - Black Berry Albert 4
750ml Bottle BBE 30/09/18 at home, shared with The Beast, 6th February 16. Opened carefully after reports of gushing, not even a hiss! The beer pours black, little bit if a head, in fact carbonation spot on. Aroma is chocolate, leather, wood, barrel. Taste is complex, chocolate, never too sweet, good bitter cocoa, oak, slight port or vineous, no where near as much as I expected. Blackberries completed integrated into this beast. Great beer.

Struise Black Albert Vintage 2012 on Steroids aka BAOS 2.3
Got a few small sips out of the bottle from kappldav123 in a small tasting glass. Big big thank you for sharing that stuff. Smells like strong liqueur. No head, no carbonation. Burning at the palate. Smokey taste with peat at the start. Followed by barrel wood, malt in the background, some fuits with low sweetness. Alcoholic warming and again smokey torf to the finish. Experimental. Strong. Hard to rate.

Struise XXX Rye Quad Reserva (Bourbon Barrel Aged) 3.7
0.33 bottle. Hazy, dark brown color and a small, off-white head. Aroma of dark malts, caramel, strong note of prunes, liquor, wood, and a hint of raisins. Taste is sweet, has some glue-like notes, raisins, caramel, and some liquor. A full body, a creamy texture, and a flat carbonation. Finish is even sweeter, fruitier, fuller in general. Overall, it is a good beer, although one might expect more from a BA quadrupel.

2012 vintage in 4 Roses barrels (bottled 9/2014) pours inky black with small thin dark brown head. Nose is rich brownie, baker’s chocolate, dark fruit, old wood, vanilla, soft plum. Taste is creamy, huge brownie batter, old wet wood, bourbon, toast, spice, Belgian chocolate. Finishes bitter and semi sweet, layered boozy bourbon brownie and fudge with toasted oak spice and bourbony vanilla, lingers. Unbelievably good at this point in time. Break ’em out of the cellar!

Struise Pannepot Grand Reserva 4.4
Goryczka niska, korzenna. Alkohol dobrze wpasowany, niewyczuwalny. Nagazowanie średnie do niskiego, lekko wyklejające, choć nie gęste w odbiorze.
Pannepot Grand Reserva leży gdzieś w pół drogi pomiędzy Pannepot Reserva a podstawową wersją Pannepot. Jest tu nieco paloności, dymności, czekolady, sporo waniliny, drewna, tanin, i suszu owocowego. Taki miks z dobrze ukrytym alkoholem i bez gaszingu. Super!

Struise Pannepot Reserva 4.5
Piana nieduża, sycząca, szybko znikająca do zera. Barwa rubinowa, klarowna, zbity osad drożdżowy na dnie butelki. Aromat intensywny, wyraźna dębina, wanilia, taniny, karmel, rodzynki, daktyle, brandy, porto, brandy... Super! W smaku powtórka wszystkiego, co zapowiadał zapach - delikatna taniniczna kwaskowość, słodycz suszonych gruszek, rodzynek, kandyzowanych fig potęgowana wanilią i karmelem. Goryczka niska, korzenna. W afterteasie kawa zbożowa i tytoń. Nagazowanie średnie, dość grube. Alkohol jedynie przyjemnie muska podniebienie, dobrze wkomponowany.
Leżakowanie w beczkach nadało mu dominujących cech dębiny i, w przeciwieństwie do agresywnie tytoniowo-palonej wersji bazowej, uczyniła je niezwykle aksamitnym, ułożonym trunkiem.

Sycząca, skromna piana, spory gaszing podczas otwierania (w porę zauważony - powolne odgazowywanie trwało ponad 30min). Barwa brązowo mahoniowa. Aromat intensywny, złożony, są nuty ciemnych owoców (jeżyny, jagody, ciemny winogron), suszonych owoców (figi, śliwki, gruszki), przypalanego karmelu, porto, rumu... W smaku podobnie, jest daktylowa słodycz, lekka kwaskowość wiśni w czekoladzie, lekka paloność, wyraźne nuty sherry, porto, dymu z ogniska, toffi i w posmaku tytoń zalany brandy. Goryczka niska, likierowo migdałowa. Alkohol wyraźnie rozgrzewa. Nagazowanie średnie do niskiego.
Odbiór zakłóca jednak gaszing i nieco zbyt wysoki alkohol.

Struise Rio Reserva 3.7
Bottle (750 ml) shared at tasting. Hazy orangey with a small off-white head, ok retention, leaving some lacing. Aroma is super fruity and yeast with a good amount of vanilla and oak but it take a while to open up and let some bourbon and wine flavors out. There’s also of course alcohol (not burning though), caramel and oxidation notes that’s arent ruining the beer and fits the profile to some extent. Taste is not overly sweet but it’s really fruity to the point of being nearly cloying. There’s also alcohol, bourbon more than wine, caramel, mild to moderate spiciness and vanilla. Full body. Moderate carbonation. Fruity finish. A good alcohol warmth. Lingering fruitiness. It’s a bit over the top and too fruity for my liking but it gets interesting when the bourbon and wine notes finally come through. Good.

Pours a dark copper with a white rim on top that leaves some lacing. Nose is of alcohol, caramel and oxidation. A little wood and not a whole lot of bourbon. Taste is moderately sweet and offers some nice figs and maple syrup. Body is medium-full, carbonation moderate and there is a bit of hot alcohol. Overall a good belgian strong but I can think of quite a few I enjoy more than this one.

0,33l bottle at home. Vintage 2014, BB 09/2020. dark brown color, small coffee-colored head. very bubbly sound from the carbonation. smells ripe fruits, acidic, some belgian yeast, plums, raisins, some sweetnesss, light alcohol / a bit glueish, spices, nice smell. full body, rather bubbly carbonation, rather full mouthfeel. tastes of dried fruits, raisins, some belgian yeast, acidic, bit glueish from the alcohol, some sweetness but quite well balanced, some underlying bourbon notes, nuts. finishes rather alcoholic and with some bitterness and notes of dried fruits and bourbon. decent stuff, rather alcoholic and also rather too much carbonation for me. Was expecting a bit more, probably should have left it in the cellar for a while to smooth out..
