Hornbeer Trump

Bottle 500ml.

[ As Hornbeer Trump ].
[ Courtesy of Flaskedrengen ]. Clear medium to dark brown - red amber color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, sugary, caramel, raisin, plum, dark fruit, wood, alcohol, old furniture - klunke møbler. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and light acidic with a long duration, wood, ash, oak, dried fruit, raisin, plum, tobacco. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat, finish feel is light alcoholic. IMO. Brilliant name to an overdone beer ... promises a lot as it does not really holds and are reasonably unbalanced. Well named :) [20160822]

Hornbeer Hornbock
Copenhagen 29/8 2016. 50 cl bottle from Meny. Battling long horned goats on the label. Pours hazy amber with off-white head. Settles as thin layer of foam. Aroma is sweet and malty with some honey and caramel. Some lingering alcohol odors hanging around. Medium carbonation and oily palate. Flavor is sweet but followed and overpowered by a heavy and harsh bitterness. Quite boozy on top of that. Lingering bitter aftertaste. Would go quite well with a marinated herring - but has a hard time on it’s own.

Aroma: dark and roasted malts, with notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa powder, licorice, honey...Flavor: intense dark and roasted malts, with notes of cocoa powder, espresso coffee, dark/milk chocolate, lactose, licorice, vanilla, honey, with hop flavor, which takes on dark fruits, intense note of plums, figs, pine...finish is dy, slighty bitter, body is full, texture smooth, carbonation is low. For my point of view Intense, delicious imperial stout.

Aromat mocno czekoladowo-kawowy, gdzieś w tle nieśmiało się przebija rum, trochę wanilii i wędzonka, chociaż ta ostatnia to akurat na granicy percepcji. Smakowo mocna paloność, dużo kawy i czekolady. Sporo, nawet sporo rumu. Sporo wanilii i drewna. Finisz rumowo-wędzony z nutą przypraw. Niskie wysycenie.

Very nice aroma, with liquorice, chocolate, fudge, vanilla and some inviting fruity notes. Great taste too, lots of chocolate cake flavours, fudge, roasted malts on the finish, some vanilla and coal, alcohol pretty well hidden. Medium thick body with soft carbonation. Amazing.

Hornbeer Viking Chili Stout (Megagrisk)
Piana beżowa, drobna, niska i nietrwała. Barwa praktycznie czarna, nieprzejrzysta.

Hornbeer Viking Chili Stout (Megagrisk)
2016-07-24. Black body with a large foamy brown head and lace. Aroma is interesting, vaguely vegetal it is very similar to hot chocolate with chilis added to it but that is not quite right. Dusty lightly roasted malt with notes of Ovaltine. 7+ Flavour is similar, dark malt base, cocoa, notes of red bell pepper precede moderately hot chili peppers. Sweetish core, finishes lightly bitter and moderately spicy. Spice lingers into the aftertaste with dusty chocolate and cocoa. 7++ Smooth medium to full bodied palate, soft carbonation. Decent, the spice level is low for most people but a touch too strong for my delicate palate! 7/5/7/4/14-15 Bottle cellared several months from the LCBO, Toronto, ON.

Hornbeer The Fundamental Blackhorn
Tworzą ją małe i średnie oczka.
Pierwsze łyki paraliżują język swoją szorstką, wytrawną i popiołową nutą.
Fundamental Blackhorn jest RIS-em wyjątkowo wytrawnym z mocnymi elemenatami palonych słodów, orzechów włoskich, palonej mocno parzonej kawy, gorzkiej czekolady, drewna i płatków dębowych. Brakuje tutaj jakiejkolwiek słodkiej kontry. Nie jest to zupełnie moja bajka. Jeśli ktoś z Was lubi wybitnie wytrawne Imperialne Stouty, to pozycja zdecydowanie dla niego.

Hornbeer The Fundamental Blackhorn
Hornbeer’s dry-hopped ’impy’ aged on oak and walnut casks. ABV on my bottle, with BBD May 7th, 2025, is 10%. Almost non-lacing but still dense and stable, creamy, cappuccino-like, tan head over an opaque jet black beer. Lovely, complex bouquet of mocha ice cream, cappuccino, black chocolate, ’Haagse hopjes’, lovely wet wood mixed in beautifully, black pepper corns, wet leather, old walnuts, salmiak, toasted brown bread, subtler hints of cognac, vanilla, espresso beans, dried orange peel, dry tree leaves, moldy hazelnut shells, cured meat, shoe polish, ’haemoglobin’ iron - in all, nothing exceptional for a big wood-aged imperial stout, but everything in perfect balance with each other and technically perfect (no off-flavors at all even at letting it warm up to room temperature - and it’s a hot day today). Same for the taste: lots of flavor components all of which are to be expected in this style, but all in harmony. There is a hint of candied sweetness at first (raisins, dates, even candied cherry) but in a very short-lived and subtle way, largely making room for beefy umami flavors in instants, while a soft, dim, background sourishness of roasted barley develops as an undercurrent carrying forward the other flavors. Carbo is soft and perfectly fit for the style, mouthfeel is evidently very thick and ’fatty’; lovely caramelly malt sweetness in the middle gains deeply nutty flavors quickly as well as a toasted bittering edge, before eventually shifting to a mocha-like roasted bitterness, which in all does remain fairly soft, yet effective in supporting the peppery hop bitterness in the end. Malt sweetness keeps creeping through as a balance against the bitterness and does a wonderful job at that, while subtle woody notes appear at the back, oaky and drying, adding some tannins for extra flavor and retronasal aroma. A dash of warming, brandy-like alcohol is thrown in but only at the very end, where it bothers nothing else and simply fulfils its duty as a warming factor in this essentially heart-warming beer style. The back label boasts many awards - gold at the Brussels Beer Challenge of 2012 to name just one - and usually I don’t take those too seriously, but in this case I can see how they came about: this is not just the best Hornbeer I had to date, it is among the top imperial stouts from Scandinavia in general. It has balance, nobility, opulence, depth and beauty - this is a great achievement in my opinion, though it remains fairly ’classic’ in its general make-up as a wood-aged imperial stout. Highly recommended.
